Freije","doi":"10.3138/guthrie.71.3.103","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3138/guthrie.71.3.103","url":null,"abstract":"Over the past decade, concern over occupational exposure and injury involving bloodborne pathogens has significantly changed most, if not all, technical aspects of health care practices and procedures on a daily basis. Because of increased exposure levels, the operating room is a high-risk setting that deserves special attention. As there is no current vaccine or curative treatment for pathogens such as HIV and Hepatitis C, the focus of bloodborne exposure and injury management mainly revolves around prevention. The fundamentals of injury prevention: education, engineering, and enforcement, that can and should be applied to the safe practice of surgery are presented. The majority of sharp injuries are self-inflicted (75%), involve the index finger of the non-dominant hand (50%), and occur during suturing. The prognosis for heart failure patients remains grim and morbidity high, with a six-year mortality rate of 82% in men and 67% in women. Goals in management of heart failure are: primary prevention; education regarding risk factors; early, appropriate, and aggressive medical management; and continued research into the pathophysiology of heart failure.
