It is argued that humanism represents an uncritical acceptance of boundaries that always prioritise individual human beings, human societies and/or human communicative systems in analyses. The contention is that this can no longer be considered legitimate. If an uncritically prioritised boundary is always placed around the human element, then that which is seen as lying beyond the human boundary (our “environment”) will inevitably be marginalised, and will come to be regarded as profane. What is profane is subject to abuse, much of which is ritualised. Because we now realise that there is no real separation between “us” (human beings) and “it” (the environment), this is not ‘just’ environmental abuse - it is self-abuse. Our “selves” are wider than the uncritically prioritised boundaries of our human bodies. We therefore have to look for an alternative to humanism. One such alternative is the ecological perspective which allows choice between boundaries and refuses to prioritise the human element uncritically.","PeriodicalId":82877,"journal":{"name":"Systems research : the official journal of the International Federation for Systems Research","volume":"19 2","pages":"67-76"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-01-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1002/SRES.3850110406","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"50991580","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is evidence that the benefits to society may not outweigh the detrimental effects that have followed this technology. This is partly because its inclusion in the affairs of humanity has been guided by a mechanical and utilitarian world view that considers humanity as a mean of production and subject to industrial goals. This paper reverses this subjection and presents a framework that integrates information systems design with an overall system design approach and which makes machines the servant of humanity. The design approach is based on a combination of Dooyeweerd's theory of modalities and general systems theory.","PeriodicalId":82877,"journal":{"name":"Systems research : the official journal of the International Federation for Systems Research","volume":"14 4","pages":"185-199"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-01-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1002/SRES.3850120303","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"50991611","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It argues that the abundance of methodologies and strategies for managing system change belies an acute lack of any clear understanding of the very nature and essence of change itself, whether it be institutional, technological, environmental or organizational. The paper calls for a greater comprehension of the fundamental dynamics of change, and highlights the considerable need for a solid theoretical basis from which to explore the complexities of system change. A cross-discipline approach is suggested, involving the analysis of change phenomena drawn from across the natural and physical sciences, deriving common characteristics and principles for abstraction into a general change framework. Several examples of the approach are described briefly, using change phenomenon taken from a range of disciplines. The paper concludes by outlining other subject areas which contain conceptually useful change phenomena worth investigating.","PeriodicalId":82877,"journal":{"name":"Systems research : the official journal of the International Federation for Systems Research","volume":"194 2","pages":"147-154"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-01-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1002/SRES.3850120207","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"50991929","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To achieve this housing goal, the Army must often enter into agreements for the construction of housing or for leasing of existing housing. Any housing construction or leasing request must be accompanied by a Segmented Housing Market Analysis (SHMA), a time-consuming and costly forecasting process that requires many manual labor tasks. As described elsewhere, a Housing Analysis System (HANS) was developed to support these tasks on a micro computer with very user-friendly computer programs. Recently, the original version of HANS has been modified and incorporated into a larger computer system now under development. At the heart of both the original and modified systems is a set of econometric and heuristic programming models that deliver the required analyses and evaluations. This paper describes these models, explains how they drive the modified HANS, and presents the results and benefits of the use of the modified computer system. 33 refs.","PeriodicalId":82877,"journal":{"name":"Systems research : the official journal of the International Federation for Systems Research","volume":"47 10","pages":"65-84"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-01-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1002/SRES.3850090207","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"50990314","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
