A major contributor to a product's quality is the quality of the process by which it is developed. Quality cannot be added to a product after it has been developed. Therefore quality assurance process is dependent on the development process and must be intimately intertwined with it. Furthermore the paradigms used for development will have a strong influence on the quality of the final product. In this paper we investigate how different development paradigms (from waterfall to object-orientation) impact some key quality criteria: need satisfaction, error detection time, future orientation, and re-usability.

It is achieved by the integration of creativity. Visionary Systems Thinking (VST) based on Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) - is identified as one of the concepts for supporting creativity in the quality management (TQM) process. This paper presents VST and proposes a model for effective integration of quality management within the managerial process. This phenomenon accounts for worldwide ineffectiveness of groups of people trying to work together to resolve complex issues under conditions that neither recognize nor compensate for Spreadthink. \u0000 \u0000Since Spreadthink is an immobilizing phenomenon, it deserves widespread attention and appropriate compensatory action by leaders, managers and administrators wherever complex issues are under serious consideration in organizations. \u0000 \u0000Concurrent with the testing that uncovered and documented Spreadthink, measures that can be taken to overcome the effects of Spreadthink have been tested. The evidence that would prove the effectiveness of these measures is equal in extent, but much less quantitative in nature than the evidence that supports the presence of Spreadthink. Nevertheless, a significant case can be made to the effect that if Spreadthink can be overcome in a particular situation, the system of management called interactive management provides the capability to overcome it in that situation.

This comparison proves favourable to the systems approach which, with its carefully crafted foundations, seems to offer much more to managers than the fads. Broadening the debate beyond management, a final section discusses the relationship between systems thinking and postmodernism—the latter usually associated with a pessimism about adopting any systemic or systematic approach.
