Data obtained from mailed questionnaires were examined and statistically analyzed to determine: (1) attitudes and knowledge; (2) differences in attitudes and knowledge among demographic groups; and (3) differences between church members' and pastors' anitudes and knowledge. Attitudes were generally positive and differed significantly when respondents were grouped by age, education, income, health status, marital status, the number of living parents and church involvement. There were no significant differences when respondents were ' grouped by sex and the number of living children. Subjects believe they have only some knowledge related to the areas included in the questionnaire and differed significantly when grouped by the demographic variables excepting sex. There were significant differences between the attitudes and knowledge of church members and pastors. An experiment in educational programming conducted by Saint Olaf College at residences of the Ebenezer Society in Minneapolis, Minnesota is reported upon. The benefits derived From the program included: (1) growth in understanding of the Christian faith; (2) better understanding of political issues; (3) greater appreciation of the liberal arts; and (4) personal satisfaction. Also explored are the implications of the experiment for the educational programs of congregations. The greater interest in education by the new generation of elderly presents new opportunities to the churches.","PeriodicalId":81690,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religion & aging","volume":"2 1","pages":"87-95"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1986-11-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J491V02N03_08","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66343546","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Topics covered during the twohour, weekly sessions were attitudes toward aging and retirement; financial planning; desirable retirement locations; use of leisure time, hobbies and skills; holistic health; and legal affairs. Information on these topics was obtained through large and small group discussions, resource speakers, and homework assignments. Participants gave high evaluations to most aspects of the workshop. It was concluded that Lutheran college campuses can be good sites for pre-retirement planning workshops and that these workshops can be beneficial to the colleges as well as to the participants. Comparison of this workshop with similar ones and modifications of the workshop are also discussed.","PeriodicalId":81690,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religion & aging","volume":"2 1","pages":"97-105"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1986-11-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J491V02N03_09","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66343615","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While the formal support system helps in meeting these needs to an extent, it is clearly overburdened and cannot cope with the expanding demand from a continuously growing number of older persons. Thus, the challenge to restructuring society's approach to the delivery of long term care leads one to examine the potential of the informal support system resource pool. While families, as one componenet of this reosurce pool, provide a substantial amount of support to their eldlerly, they themselves need to be supported as well as supplemented. The church can undertake a valuable role by facilitating intiatives to foster and stimulate informal supports and encouraging volunteer support networks.","PeriodicalId":81690,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religion & aging","volume":"2 1","pages":"55-67"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1986-02-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J491V02N01_05","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66342282","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To better understand the role of the church in the aging network, a four year action research project was developed. Six communities were studies in depth: interviews were conducted with clergy, social service agency directors, and seniros; community models for working towads common ministry goals were developed; and curricular materials for seminaries were generated based on research results. This paper presents some of the significant findings of this research project, including the various groups of seniors found in the local churches. Study implications are discussed in relation to the current role of the church's work in aging; methods of corodinating services both among churches and between churches and local service agencies; the training of clergy to work with the elderly; and the role of the national church.","PeriodicalId":81690,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religion & aging","volume":"2 1","pages":"99-116"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1986-02-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J491V02N01_08","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66342851","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This increased vitality in the late and middle years of life has provoked the realization that a new definition of the mature years of life has provoked the realization that a new definition of the mature years is desparately needed. Thus, a refocus away from the traditional, magical age of 65 to the period between 50 and 75 years of age- the \"third quarter of life\"- is useful for developing new policies and practices which increase productive potential and life satisfaction for persons in that age group. \"Third quarter Americans\" pose a special challenge to religous institutions. Churches are called to respond to this challenge by creating vehicles for the utilization of talents and the nurture of individual inner growth.","PeriodicalId":81690,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religion & aging","volume":"2 1","pages":"117-125"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1986-02-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J491V02N01_09","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66342581","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such research has identified information on the living cirumstances of rural elderly as well as on the advantages and disadvantages of the rural milieu as a context for aging. Research has also demonstrated the central role which religion and the church play for the rural elderly, and it is iwth this knowledge that the church must expand its role in service to this population. While the last century has witnessed an increased average life expectancy, the progress made in extending the lifespan has been deferral of death to a lter point in an unchanging maximum life potential of 110 years. Furthermore, even if science succeeds in eliminating diseases which continue to block longer life, with a resultant additional increase of lifespan, the added life would be years of growing old and not of additional good health or youth. People have continously sought to provide explanations regarding the phenomenon of growing older and the eventuality of death. Early cultural and religious beliefs regarding longevity served to alleviate some of the anxieties about aging. Then, a scientific shift advocated a focus on improving conditions of later life. Mobilized research efforts have generated numerous views on aging including the ability of the individual to adapt and the importance of maximizing the functioning of individuals in order to improve life in the later years. An important challenge which may best be broached by religious institutions thus calls upon churches to help individuals set goals which will enhance aging by enabling individuals to find meanings (metaphors) that facilitate the process of adapting to aging.","PeriodicalId":81690,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religion & aging","volume":"2 1","pages":"29-39"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1986-02-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J491V02N01_03","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66342179","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
