Lower levels of government assistance, competition for available funds by proprietary organizations, and a burgeoning aged population are present societal conditions calling for board and management staff action. Strategic planning, political activity, and possibly corporate restructuring are alternatives to be considered. The benefits gained by such organizational moves come in the form of operational strengths, flexibility in the market, and efficiency in and acceptance of programs. In turn, agencies and institutions help assure their social ministry role in future years.","PeriodicalId":81690,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religion & aging","volume":"2 1","pages":"73-80"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1987-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J491V02N04_09","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66344301","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This aper describes the three years of operation of the program from September 1980 to March 1983. During the first three years of operation, the program experienced considerable growth in: (a) demand for service; f (b) number of matches made; and (c) number of matches in force each month. In addition, the cost of the program during this time decreased. Interviews with elderly residents in the program revealed that most felt more secure, experienced more companionship, had less trouble taking care of their homes, and were more satisfied with their lives since entering the program. Program participants expressed strong approval of the actions of the Lutheran Social Service staff in arranging their matches. The fellowship was jointly funded by a W. K. Kellogg Fellowship granted by the Hospital Research and Educational Trust, Chicago, Illinois and by The Center. At its completion, the project proposed a concept of supportive elderly congregate housing designed for persons not only requiring assistance with such vital activities as eating, dressing, and grooming but also lacking adequate support from family and friends. Confronted by gaps in our health and social service systems, these elderly often struggle with whether to remain in independent living arrangements without adequate coping mechanisms or to enter long term care institutions which mav provide more services than are needed. Four components of this housing are discussed: A Tenant Profile describing potential residents; recommendations for environmental features;skrvices to be provided; and financial resour...","PeriodicalId":81690,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religion & aging","volume":"2 1","pages":"47-54"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1987-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J491V02N04_06","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66344142","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The need for such a ministry is especially great in Florida's Suncoast Area where a great many people are over age 75 and separated from family support systems. While Florida statutes make no provisions for public guardianship, Florida law does allow nonprofit corporations to be appointed guardian of person and/or property. Under this statute, Lutheran Ministries of Florida serves as the court appointed guardian for incompetent persons. It uses a teamwork approach involving professional staff and trained volunteers to assure that the needs of the ward are met.","PeriodicalId":81690,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religion & aging","volume":"2 1","pages":"41-46"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1987-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J491v02n04_05","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66344455","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Spiritual care by chaplains was not available in any of the six nursing homes in Wausau, Wisconsin. Twelve Lutheran congregations in the area worked out a plan to provide the necessary pastoral care. The congregations formed a coordinating agency, Greater Wausau Christian Services, Inc. Through the services of one staff person, the director, who enlisted the lay and pastoral resources of the participating congregations, pastoral care was provided. Worship led by the pastors, meaningful visits made by trained and supervised lay people, and the availability of a trained chaplain became a reality for nearly seven hundred residents in the six long term care facilities.","PeriodicalId":81690,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religion & aging","volume":"2 1","pages":"57-64"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1986-11-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J491V02N03_05","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66343450","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this crisis an answer is demanded to the question, \"Was my life worthwhile?\" A positive or negative verdict must be reached. The \"Life Review\" is necessary for the resolution of this conflict. Such a life review is often precipitated by the awareness of death. A few cases are briefly cited to show how elderly patients in a Veterans Administration (V.A.) Hospital setting have coped with this crisis. Two theological ideas are brought to bear on this problem. One is a review of one's life in connection with James Fowler's idea of \"master story,\" of how effectively we connect with our cherished religious symbols, and the other is Donald Capps's \"parabolic event,\" or how we interpret events in the past as having the potential for new insights. A new look at repentance and confession is necessary as they are approximate psychological counterparts to these theological...","PeriodicalId":81690,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religion & aging","volume":"2 1","pages":"1-11"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1986-11-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J491V02N03_01","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66343041","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Networks had to be made intentional through programming. A needs assessment of the senior population identified specific subgroups and their needs. Recognizing the diversity of the senior population, a broad spectrum of programs was established. An effort was made to maintain a balance between traditional and innovative. The senior program has strengthened the networking among seniors, increased their integration with the other age groups in the church, and provided an entry level for those new to the church. The program has also become known in the community, which has resulted in cooperation with other senior service organizations who provide education and training. The Area Agency on Aging, realizing the importance of the church to the senior population, has selected a member of the church community to serve on its Advisory ...","PeriodicalId":81690,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religion & aging","volume":"2 1","pages":"77-85"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1986-11-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J491V02N03_07","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66343878","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The program offers group meetings, information and referral, direct services, and visitation. It provides spiritual, educational, and fellowship opportunities, and supports the elderly's independence. Instruction about aging, and involvement of younger members in this ministry, has drawn the congregation together with a sense of understanding, community, and mutual responsibility. St. John's approach demonstrates the important role churches can have in the support network of the elderly.","PeriodicalId":81690,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religion & aging","volume":"2 1","pages":"65-76"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1986-11-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J491V02N03_06","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66343085","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The hypothesis is that a person drops out of active church life because helshe feels alienated within the social system known as the church. Groups were tested in Michigan, Indiana, and Florida. Each group was tested for church attendance, religiosity, alienation and religious experience. Using alienation as the independent variable, it was determined that there was a correlation between alienation and church attendance. These two variables were found to be correlated at the 0.001 level of confidence. Upon further examination it was found that the computed T-Statistic indicated that the correlation was inverse in nature. As alienation increases, church attendance measurably decreases. Due to the fmdings of this research the hypothesis was accepted. Having determined that alienation is a primary cause of decline in church attendance among the elderly, ways in which t...","PeriodicalId":81690,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religion & aging","volume":"2 1","pages":"45-55"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1986-11-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J491V02N03_04","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66343292","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
