While older people of the future may be better educated and more prosperous, many may also be more isolated and frail. Happy mythology to the contrary, a good many aged people presently lead a marginal existence. We can anticipate a much greater number of fragile, lonely people in future years. However, the Church must redefine its images of \"successful\" ministry to emphasize the inhercnt value of the gray church. Gerontological stud~es need to become integrated in the whole enterprise of theological education and should be recognized as both presenting a special opportunity for female clergy and for developing a new model of m~nistry. Discussed are three needs for adequate preparation for the pastoral care of the aged: (1) Training in group process, (2) Skills in conflict resolution, and (3) A theology of aging that rests on Grace rather than works and that separates aging as a process distinct from death and dying. Finally, the author insists upon the involvement of the aged as a prerequisite for authenticity in each of these areas.","PeriodicalId":81690,"journal":{"name":"Journal of religion & aging","volume":"3 1","pages":"33-45"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1987-09-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J491V03N01_04","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66344477","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In typical local parishes, there is a vast increase in the number of frail older adults as- well as the number of their care-giving families. Day Centers offer an opportunity for wholistic care for the older adults. By careful programing the needs of the whole person are addressed: social, physical, emotional, and spiritual. Care-giving families appreciate sharing their responsibility. Parishes have vast resources to offer Day Centers. Agencies have the expertise for program development and operations. With the partnership of parish and agency, resources are enhanced. They generally make insufficient use of traditional health care services oftentimes because of location outside of immediate neighborhoods, high costs and perceived disinterest of many providers to their unique needs. Many current models for delivering health care do not consider the multi-functional needs of this population. A model is presented in which several geriatric health clinics are housed in neighborhood churches and use Geriatric Nurse Practitioners as the primary care providers. Care is directed toward management of chronic illness and maximizing the capacity of the elderly to function independently in the community. Volunteers from the parishes and community are trained to provide staff support for the clinic operations and to perform the follow-up activities on personal care aspects of the frail and vulnerable elderly.
