The Real Nursing Home Scandal

Abstract

The primary sup ort system for older persons is and always has been the family. In t 1 e 21st century, however, the configuration of the average American family will continue to change, making it less responsive to the needs of older members. Will the church/synagogue/parish fill the ga and become the extended family for disconnected and isolated 01 8 er persons, particularly for those who will be living in nursing homes? While nursing homes are criticized for what is sometimes described as deplorable conditions and poor quality care, this blame is often misplaced. It is the religious sector which has abandoned those who live in nursing homes. Will this trend become worse, or get better?
