The Third Quarter of Life

The average life expectancy in America has increased dramatically since the turn of the century, and has been accompanied by a lengthened period of vigor in middle life. This increased vitality in the late and middle years of life has provoked the realization that a new definition of the mature years of life has provoked the realization that a new definition of the mature years is desparately needed. Thus, a refocus away from the traditional, magical age of 65 to the period between 50 and 75 years of age- the "third quarter of life"- is useful for developing new policies and practices which increase productive potential and life satisfaction for persons in that age group. "Third quarter Americans" pose a special challenge to religous institutions. Churches are called to respond to this challenge by creating vehicles for the utilization of talents and the nurture of individual inner growth.
