Examining the Role of the Church in the Aging Network

Abstract

Although churches are invaluable resources, few studies have investigated the total range of services available with emphasis on how these ministries interact with the local aging network. To better understand the role of the church in the aging network, a four year action research project was developed. Six communities were studies in depth: interviews were conducted with clergy, social service agency directors, and seniros; community models for working towads common ministry goals were developed; and curricular materials for seminaries were generated based on research results. This paper presents some of the significant findings of this research project, including the various groups of seniors found in the local churches. Study implications are discussed in relation to the current role of the church's work in aging; methods of corodinating services both among churches and between churches and local service agencies; the training of clergy to work with the elderly; and the role of the national church.
