This is due to the DNA binding proteins, the protamines, which replace most of the histones during spermiogenesis. This chromatin, however, shares some features with somatic cell chromatin. One of these is the organization of DNA into loop domains attached at their bases to a proteinaceous nuclear matrix. Several groups have shown that the sites at which DNA associates with the sperm nuclear matrix contain chromatin structures that are linked with specific functions. Recent data also suggest that the sperm nuclear matrix plays essential roles in the paternal pronucleus of the newly fertilized oocyte, suggesting that the sperm cell provides more information to the new embryo than solely the genetic material it delivers. Here, we will review these data which together give insight into the functional significance and requirements of sperm nuclear structure.</p>","PeriodicalId":8143,"journal":{"name":"Archives of andrology","volume":"53 3","pages":"135-40"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01485010701329378","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"26815042","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fejes, Z. Z avaczki, S. Kolosz ar, J. Szöll} osi, J. Daru, L. Kov acs, and A. P al Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University of Szeged, Szeged, Hungary A recent review paper from Derias et al. [3] described the growing concern over the safety of using mobile phones. Our own results lend support to their conclusions as we have observed relationships between the duration of possession of a cell phone and the spermatozoa motility characteristics and also between the duration of daily transmission and the spermatozoa motility characteristics [5]. Although rats are frequently used as laboratory animals for various studies, the results must be interpreted with caution, as the different species have different sensitivities to environmental effects and rats are famous for their ability to adapt. Conclusions may also be drawn of the harmful effects on fertility from studies on different human tissues. There have been publications concerning effects on the central nervous system, such as alterations in the electroencephalogram pattern, the sleeping pattern or even the neuroendocrine functions [1, 2, 7, 9]. de Seze et al. found no alterations in the levels of pituitary hormones in association with prolonged cell phone use [4], whereas Burch et al. demonstrated a reduced 6-hydroxymelatonin sulphate (6OHMS) level in the urine among those using a cell phone for over 25 minutes= day; 6-OHMS is the urinary metabolite reflecting the serum level of the pineal hormone melatonin [1]. Melatonin is known to be an antioxidant that protects against lipid peroxidation in the retina, brain, liver cells, and even human sperm [6]. The electromagnetic radiation emitted by cell phones may cause DNA breakage in cells in the male genital tract, as this can occur in a low-frequency electromagnetic field. In vitro studies appear justified to investigate the increased numbers of chromosome aberrations of the micronuclei in human leucocytes and DNA breaks [8, 10, 11]. Additionally, a recent pilot study has shown that proteomics may be an effective tool in the search for cell responses to weak stimuli, including cell phone radiation. Multiple cell phone radiation protein targets were found in endothelial cells that participate in basic physiological cell functions such as cell energy production, protein translation, and cytoskeleton-dependent processes. The most important finding from the aspect of spermatozoa movement could well be the decline in the expression of isocitrate-dehydrogenase 3 (NADþ)a, a subunit of the mitochondrial enzyme, which catalyses the conversion of Address correspondence to I. All patients underwent testicular sperm extraction (TESE) for intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Forty percent of the azoospermic cohort showed a significant reduction in the copies of at least one of the genes (DAZ P=0.003; RBMY1 P=0.009). The histopathology of these patients ranged from Sertoli cell only (SCO) to severe hypospermatogenesis with interstitial fibrosis. The patient with the AZFb + c deletion lacked expression of DAZ and RBMY1 and had a histopathology of SCO. The patient with the AZFc deletion had reduced expression of RBMY1 and no DAZ expression with a histopathology of spermatocyte arrest. Twenty-one male Wistar rats were divided into three groups. Group I and group II were designated as control (sham-orchidectomized) and orchidectomized rats, respectively. Rats in group III were orchidectomized and injected daily with testosterone propionate for 1 month. At the end of the experimental period, all animals were sacrificed by decapitation. The pituitary glands of all rats were removed and processed for semi-quantitative evaluation of immunohistochemical leptin staining. Intensity of immunostaining was determined on a scale between 0 (no staining) and 5 (heavy staining). Immunostaining of leptin was moderate (3+) in control rats, heavy (5+) in orchidectomized rats, and low (1+) in testosterone-treated orchidectomized rats, respectively. These findings indicate that orchidectomy increases leptin secretion in anterior pituitary cells, and this increase of leptin synthesis can be prevented by administration of testosterone propionate. Thus, testosterone seems to affect leptin production in the anterior pituitary of male rats.</p>","PeriodicalId":8143,"journal":{"name":"Archives of andrology","volume":"53 2","pages":"79-82"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01485010601164024","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"26682772","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This was assessed by conducting TdT-mediated dUTP nick end-labeling detection, spermatogonial stem cell transplantation and fertility recovery evaluation. Our results showed that spontaneous apoptosis was observed in normal rats' testes from the control group with an apoptotic index (AI) average of 10.24+/-1.52. In the regimen-treated group, the predominant apoptotic cells were spermatocytes and spermatids in the seminiferous tubules. Spermatogonia were not apoptotic (AI averaged 113.42+/-13.24). Two to three months after transplantation of spermatogonial stem cells isolated from regimen-treated rats into recipient nude mice, elongated rat spermatids were identified in the seminiferous tubules of recipient nude mice. Six weeks after withdrawal of the administration, fertility of the regimen-treated rats was recovered compared with that of the control group. The number of litters produced by females mated with regimen-treated males averaged 9.88+/-0.166 matched 10.30+/-0.171 of control group and the litters of the first generation appeared to be normal.
