This question is, generally, answered negatively from two distinct angles. The first calls Kant's analysis of radical evil not quite radical enough. Such a charge can be attributed to the bulk of Postmodern reflection on evil which emphasizes the ultimate irrationality of evil. For instance, Emmanuel Levinas states that Kant's rationalized assessment of evil is untenable since the evil Levinas claims to have perceived in the Holocaust lacks any and all criterion to describe it. 3 Evil is the absolute other to goodness that no level of reflection or moral agency can undo. A second angle calls Kant's analysis of radical evil too radical. Such a charge can be attributed to commentators as early as Hegel who attested to the reality of evil but ultimately sublated it within the self-realization of the world-spirit therefore mitigating its radicality within a greater rational scheme of self-unfolding goodness. In a nutshell, Kant's concept of 'radical evil' is stretched between Lutheran pessimism and rationalist Enlightenment optimism, and accordingly fails to appease either Postmodern thinkers who emphasize the radicality of evil or","PeriodicalId":80655,"journal":{"name":"Bijdragen tijdschrift voor filosofie en theologie","volume":"73 1","pages":"121 - 142"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.2143/BIJ.73.2.2172315","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67912547","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In his phenomenology of speech, Chretien defines human speaking as a response to a divine call. This call is always stronger than its response, and can never be met correspondingly. This excess of the call over the response is related to the process of creation. God, in his call, calls into being. The hearing of this calling is entering into being. 15 The gerunds in the former sentence underline the immediacy of calling hearing being. Calling implies being heard and coming to being. The structure or articulation of his concept of God must be analysed evidently with respect to his most relevant Neo-Platonic sources, especially, in the view of many including myself, to Proclus. It is the objective of the present analysis to shed some light on the deeper philosophical pattern of the concept of God in De divinis nominibus and to compare it with that of Denys' apparently most immediate NeoPlatonic source for fundamental theology, Proclus' lnstitutio theologica. Further, towards the end of this paper we shall try to systematically analyse what seems perhaps the most fundamental of all Proclean and Dionysian theological premises, the identification of the One with the Good. In his personal life, as well as his writings, Hume openly doubted the reality of an afterlife and the existence of the soul, showed suspicion and disdain for the idea of a wrathful, punishing God-Judge, and defended the claim that morality was conceivable without any reference to Divine Law.2 Atheism had in 18th century culture also the connotation of 'licentiousness' and 'a-morality'. This is a rather general opprobrium, but one implication of it was certainly that in the Calvinist Scotland of Hume's days the adherence to religious duties and observances was seen as an essential part of the good life. Though Hume seems to have been overall a person of virtuous and honorable character, he despised all forms of religious virtues, as is testified by his dismissal of the \"monkish virtues\" and the artificial moralities of religious enthusiasts like Blaise Pascal and Ignatius of Loyola (EPM, 9.3; EPM,","PeriodicalId":80655,"journal":{"name":"Bijdragen tijdschrift voor filosofie en theologie","volume":"73 1","pages":"281 - 303"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.2143/BIJ.73.3.2184718","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67913253","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
