Two different 3D maxillary posterior bone segments were modelled. Group 1 was composed of a bone segment consisting of cortical bone and type IV cancellous bone with 100% bone-to-implant contact. Group 2 was analoged as a bone segment consisting of cortical bone and cancellous bone including spherical bone design and homogenous tubular hollow spaced structures with 30% spherical porosities and 70% bone-to-implant contact ratio. 4 mm diameter and 5 mm height dental implants were assumed to be osseointegrated and placed at the center of the segments. 300 N lateral occlusal bite force was applied at a 25 degree inclination to the implants long axis. The maximum von Mises stresses in cortical and cancellous bones; and implant-abutment complex were calculated. The von Mises stress values upon the implants and the cancellous bone around the implants of the 70% bone-to-implant contact group were almost three times higher compared to the values of the 100% bone-to-implant contact group. For clinical reality, use of the 70% model for finite element analysis (FEA) simulation of the posterior maxilla region better represents real alveolar bone and the increased stress and strain distributions evaluated on the cortical and cancellous bone around the dental implants.","PeriodicalId":77634,"journal":{"name":"The International journal of oral implantology : implantologist","volume":"13 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75487818","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To preserve the blood supply to underlying bone, implants can be placed with flapless surgical procedure. It also provides numerous other benefits, such as decreased trauma, short recovery time, less pain, reduced rate of infection and improved patient compliance. This report presents a case of flapless implant placement in mandibular posterior region with optimum results and minimal discomfort to the patient. The advantages and limitations of this procedure are also discussed.","PeriodicalId":77634,"journal":{"name":"The International journal of oral implantology : implantologist","volume":"93 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80818778","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of the study was to evaluate the retentiveness of purposely-designed implant cement and to compare its retentiveness with dental cements that are commonly used with implant systems.Materials and method: Ten implant analogs were embedded in auto-polymerizing acrylic resin blocks and titanium abutments were attached to them. 50 standardized copings were waxed directly on the abutment and casted. The cements used were: 1. resin-bonded zinc oxide eugenol cement (Kalzinol, DPI), 2. purposely-designed implant cement (Premier implant cement), 3. zinc phosphate cement (DeTrey Zinc, Dentsply), 4. zinc polycarboxylate cement (Poly-F, Dentsply) and 5. glass ionomer cement (GC Gold Label, GC corporation, Japan). After cementation, each sample was subjected to a pull-out test using universal testing machine and loads required to remove the crowns were recorded. The mean values and standard deviations of cement failure loads were analyzed using ANOVA and Bonferroni test.Results: The mean values (±SD) of loads at failure (n = 10) for various cements were as follows (N): resin-bonded zinc oxide eugenol cement 394.62 (±9.76), Premier implant cement 333.86 (±18.91), zinc phosphate cement 629.30 (±20.65), zinc polycarboxylate cement 810.08 (±11.52) and glass ionomer cement 750.17 (±13.78).Conclusions: The results do not suggest that one cement type is better than another, but they do provide a ranking order of the cements in their ability to retain the prosthesis and to facilitate its easy retrievability.","PeriodicalId":77634,"journal":{"name":"The International journal of oral implantology : implantologist","volume":"21 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81700689","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Three groups were arranged, Group1 consisted of five abutments with 1.5 mm gingival height (GH); Group2, five abutments with 3.5 mm gingival height, and Group3 consisted five abutments with 5.5 mm gingival height. Each specimen was mounted in transparent auto-polymerizing acrylic resin block and abutment screw was tightened to 35 N.cm with an electric torque wrench. After 5 minutes, Initial Torque Loss (ITL) was recorded for all specimens. Metal crowns were fabricated with 45oocclusal surface and were placed on the abutments. A cyclic load of 75 N and frequency of 1HZ was applied perpendicular to the long axis of each specimen. After 500000 cycles, Secondary Torque Loss (STL) was recorded. One way ANOVA analysis was used to evaluate the effects of abutment collar height before and after cyclic loading.Results: One-way ANOVA showed that ITL among the groups was not significantly different (P=.52), while STL was significantly different among three groups (P=.008). Post Hoc Tukey HSD Tests showed that STL values were significantly different between the abutments with 1.5 mm GH (Group1) and with 5.5 mm GH (Group3) (P=.007). Also, Paired comparison t-test showed that cyclic loading significantly influenced the STL in comparison with the ITL in each group. Conclusion: Within the limitation of this study, it can be concluded that increase in height of abutment collar could adversely affect the torque loss of abutment screw.","PeriodicalId":77634,"journal":{"name":"The International journal of oral implantology : implantologist","volume":"66 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88764831","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However when the width of the edentulous crest is insufficient for the placement of a regular sized implant, the use of a narrow diameter implant (NDI) should be considered to prevent the use of invasive reconstruction techniques such as grafting procedures. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the survival and marginal bone levels of NDIs five years after prosthetic loading. One hundred and fifty-nine NDIs belonging to four brands (Straumann, Astra Tech, Biolok, Xive) in 71 patients were evaluated. Clinical and radiographic evaluations using digital panoramic radiography were carried out. Two implants failed and no progressive bone loss or periapical lesions were detected in the remaining 157 implants which brings an overall success rate of 98.74%. The mean marginal bone loss (MBL) was found as 1 mm on mesial and 0.98 mm on distal side of the implants. No statistically significant relationship was detected between patient age, gender, implant location, implant length, type of the prosthesis and MBL (P > 0.05). Among the 4 brands used, the MBL around Biolok implants were detected as the highest; but significantly higher than the MBL around only the Astra Tech implants (P < 0.05). The results of the present study indicated that NDIs can be a good solution for specific clinical situations where regular sized implants are not suitable.","PeriodicalId":77634,"journal":{"name":"The International journal of oral implantology : implantologist","volume":"21 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85965910","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The search included the following keywords, either alone or combined: \"non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs,\" \"dental implants,\" \"bone healing,\" and \"osteoprogenitor cells.\" The inclusion criteria were the following: randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical studies, in vivo animal model studies of osseointegration, and in vitro studies of the effects of these agents on osteoprogenitor cells. The literature search revealed 360 references. A total of 31 articles met the inclusion criteria, including two clinical trials, 20 animal studies, and nine osteoprogenitor cell studies. The clinical trials revealed that cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) inhibitors did not impair osseointegration. The animal studies showed that any drug that is capable of inhibiting COX-2 may impair the osseointegration process. The in vitro studies showed that COX-2 inhibitors are the most potent depressors of osseointegration at the cellular level. These patients present a substantial challenge in dental treatment. This case report presents oral rehabilitation of a 22-year-old male patient diagnosed with ED using an implant-tooth supported telescopic partial denture at mandible and a tooth supported telescopic partial denture at maxilla. Implants in the mandible were placed at the sites of the right and left lateral incisor teeth. Following implant placement, the remaining buccal bone dehiscence was filled with deproteinized bovine bone graft and covered with resorbable membrane. To manage the vestibular insufficiency and to increase the keratinized mucosa in maxilla, bilateral acellular dermal matrix allograft was used on the right and left buccal aspects. Treatment described here improved the patient's functional and esthetic status while significantly restoring his oral health and self-esteem.","PeriodicalId":77634,"journal":{"name":"The International journal of oral implantology : implantologist","volume":"37 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78052997","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A highly accepted and elegant solution is to replace the missing molar with an endossous implant and a fixed crown. A biologically, anatomically and physiologically appropriate solution could be to replace the two roots of the missing molar with two implants. One way to incorporate the use of two implants to support a molar sized crown is to use implants of smaller diameter. Mini implants may successfully support fixed partial dentures in the posterior mandible in highly selected patients with an appropriate prosthetic design and occlusal scheme. Jaw forces, bone quality and volume are edentulous site conditions that may affect treatment decisions. The implant dentist should consider many diverse implant and prosthetic designs to appropriately treat the atrophic mandible. Zirconia splinted crowns supported by mini dental implants may be an effective treatment for selected posterior sites.","PeriodicalId":77634,"journal":{"name":"The International journal of oral implantology : implantologist","volume":"130 1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91088917","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
