Six female subjects wore the compression stockings after 20 min of rest at supine position. The oxygen intake and ventilation showed no significant difference between with and without the stockings. Q at standing position was lower than that at supine position by an act of hydrostatic pressure. However this decrease was lower with stockings than that without stockings. The compression stockings used in this study might improve the venous return to the heart. However, the subjects complained of discomfort due to the high clothing pressure. In the second experiment, the authors estimated the minimum pressure required in improving the venous return. The subjects wore the trousers having two bladders inflated by air pressure. The trousers could compress the leg (contain the foot) and thigh individually. From the relationship between air pressure and Q, the estimated minimum pressures were 17 mmHg for the leg and 15 mmHg for the thigh.
","PeriodicalId":77409,"journal":{"name":"The Annals of physiological anthropology = Seiri Jinruigaku Kenkyukai kaishi","volume":"13 3","pages":"121-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.2114/ahs1983.13.121","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"19035860","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two differently moisture-regaining underwear materials were tested: 100% cotton (COTTON) and 100% acrylic (ORLON). Nine female subjects participated in the experiments at an ambient temperature of -10 degrees C. The experiment comprised a 20-min of rest, a 40-min of walking exercise (6 km/h) and a 40-min of recovery. No significant differences could be found in the average values of core temperature, skin and clothing temperatures, amount of non-evaporated and evaporated sweat or subjective ratings of thermal sensations within the two different underwear ensembles. The amount of sweat accumulated into the underwear was very low (3 +/- 1g) and (5 +/- 3g) (mean +/- SE) in COTTON and ORLON, respectively. In both ensembles moisture was transferred towards outer layers of the clothing where the amount of moisture correlated significantly with the total sweat production. In a heavily sweating individual, however, the properties of COTTON underwear, such as wicking ability and high moisture regain, became apparent (accumulated sweat 71g) compared to ORLON (46g). It is concluded that the underwear materials have no significant influence on the thermophysiological responses or subjective sensations under the conditions studied, especially when the sweat rate is low. On the other hand, in individuals with a higher sweating rate the differences between materials may become evident even during light exercise.
","PeriodicalId":77409,"journal":{"name":"The Annals of physiological anthropology = Seiri Jinruigaku Kenkyukai kaishi","volume":"13 3","pages":"129-36"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.2114/ahs1983.13.129","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"19035861","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Five healthy male subjects were tested. Cardiac output (Q) were measured using spot electrode array. Each subject performed rest-exercise transitions in leg and arm exercise on an electrically braked ergometer. The intensities of leg exercise were 25, 50, and 100 W for 5 min and those of arm exercise were 25 and 50 W. Comparisons between spot and band electrodes were made for the absolute magnitude of Q and stroke volume (SV), as well as for impedance derivative waveforms. The waveforms for spot electrodes showed less fluctuation by breathing and movement artifacts than for band electrodes. Q for spot electrodes were larger than those for band electrodes. There was a significant correlationship between oxygen uptake (Vo2) and Q. There was a significant correlationship between Q using spot electrode and Q measured by CO2 rebreathing method. Nonlinear correlation coefficient to exponential curve of Q kinetics for leg exercise was more than 0.7 and for arm exercise more than 0.4 in spite of large movement of upper body. It is suggested that the present system using spot electrodes is superior in signal processing to those for band electrodes and able to evaluate Q kinetics without multiple repetition of exercise tests.
","PeriodicalId":77409,"journal":{"name":"The Annals of physiological anthropology = Seiri Jinruigaku Kenkyukai kaishi","volume":"13 2","pages":"69-78"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.2114/ahs1983.13.69","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"19188812","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The subjects were 18 adult males of whom 6 were exposed to concentric training, 6 were exposed to eccentric training, and 6 were exposed to control. Training intensity was the exertion of maximum isotonic strength on the extension, flexion, left bending and right bending of the neck. All training exercises for concentric and eccentric groups were given 10 times a set, 3 sets in a day, 3 times a week for 8 weeks. The changes in the strength of cervical muscle and in the girth of neck due to muscular training were measured regularly once a week. The results were as follows: 1) Maximum isometric strength increased significantly (p < 0.001) by 37.8% in concentric training group, and 39.6% in eccentric training group. No significant difference of strength increase was observed between concentric and eccentric training group. There was a significant decrease in the strength of cervical muscle in the early stage of muscular training, accompanied by severe muscle fatigue, but a remarkable increase in strength due to concentric and eccentric training was observed during the 8 weeks. 2) The girth of neck increased significantly (p < 0.001) by 4.9% in concentric training group, and 5.5% in eccentric training group. Significant difference of girth increase was observed after 3 and 4 weeks of muscular training of cervical muscle, meanwhile the girth of neck increased slightly by 1.3% in control group.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
","PeriodicalId":77409,"journal":{"name":"The Annals of physiological anthropology = Seiri Jinruigaku Kenkyukai kaishi","volume":"13 2","pages":"59-67"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.2114/ahs1983.13.59","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"19188811","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the method detecting AT by using F is influenced by the subject's condition such as the existence of sport experiences. Ten healthy adults volunteered to perform progressive cycle ergometer exercise with workloads increased by 30-W (female:20-W) every 2 min at 60 rpm. VO2 at AT were determined by four different methods, which detect the point of 1)nonlinear increase in VE, VCO2, and increase in VE/VO2 without increasing in VE/VCO2 (AT-v), 2) nonlinear increase in F (visual estimation: AT-VF), 3) inflection in F by multisegment linear regression (AT-CF), 4) inflection with omitting above RC point as with 3) (AT-CF2). The mean VO2 at AT-VF (40.8 +/- 9.2 ml/kg/min) and AT-CF (42.7 +/- 9.9 ml/kg/min) was significantly higher compared with AT-V (28.2 +/- 10.4 ml/kg/min) and not RC (42.3 +/- 10.0 ml/kg/min). It would be possible that AT-VF and AT-CF indicated RC, but not AT. There were no significant differences between AT-CF2 (28.2 +/- 10.9 ml/kg/min) and AT-V, and a highly positive correlation (r = 0.79, p less than 0.05) was observed between them. It was recognized that F reached a plateau at AT in four of the subjects. The error between AT-V and AT-CF2 was observed individual variations and the error between them within 5% was observed in only one subject. These results suggest that F is inadequate as an indicator of the AT, because F may be influenced by entrainment of breathing and pedalling frequency.","PeriodicalId":77409,"journal":{"name":"The Annals of physiological anthropology = Seiri Jinruigaku Kenkyukai kaishi","volume":"16 1","pages":"237-42"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86679287","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The subjects were 199 female college students, who were not in the habit of drinking and smoking. Results obtained were as follows: After controlling the effects of age and percent body fat (%fat), VO2max/wt showed a significant correlations with %fat, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and systolic blood pressure. The values of VO2max/wt corresponding to borderline values of these CHD risk factors ranged from 27.6 to 29.5ml/kg.min. The highest value of VO2max/wt was very close to the value recommended for women older than 60 years of age by the Ministry of Public Welfare. The subjects were then divided into 4 groups; at above and below the value of VO2max/wt (35ml/kg.min) recommended for women between 20 and 29 years of age, and at above and below the value of VO2max/wt (31ml/kg.min) recommended for women older than 60 years of age by the Ministry of Public Welfare. There were no significant differences among 4 groups in occurrence of abnormal values in CHD risk factors. The results of this study support the validity of the value of VO2max/wt (31ml/kg.min) recommended for women older than 60 years of age by the Ministry of Public Welfare. All subjects had had an experience in endurance training as athletes and underwent the endurance training at the college for two years. Training consisted mainly of about 2 hours of running, 3 to 4 days a week. Training effects were found as measured by a 5000m-run pretraining (mean 19: 40.3 min) and post-training (mean 18: 49.3 min). The average increase in maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max/kg) after training was 9.4% (P < 0.05). UCG's dimensional variables such as LVDd, LVPWT and IVST in the post-training period did not reveal any increase. However, LVDs as a cardiac dimension showed a tendency to decrease, and functional variables such as SV, EF, FS showed a tendency to increase. This functional improvement appeared to be due to a decrease in LVDs. From these results, it is likely that the endurance training prior to this study might have helped an effective adaptation in their cardiac dimensions. Thus, we suggest that prior to this study cardiac dimensions had extended and enlarged to a certain extent, and then cardiac function might be improved as the subsequent physiological phenomenon.
","PeriodicalId":77409,"journal":{"name":"The Annals of physiological anthropology = Seiri Jinruigaku Kenkyukai kaishi","volume":"13 1","pages":"1-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.2114/ahs1983.13.1","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"19121242","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this technique is to keep the functions of the skin as an external barrier and to prevent the patients from infection and decubitus. However, the effect of BB on the blood circulation of the skin has not yet been identified, and the data observed are controversial. We have evaluated the effects of BB on the blood circulation of the skin by use of thermography. BB was applied on the right side of the back (RB) in 6 healthy female subjects who exposed both sides of their back (RB and LB) at room temperature. Ethanol was applied on the 5 x 5 cm area of RB and LB after BB, and recovery of the skin temperature was observed. After BB, the average temperature of RB was significantly lower than that of LB. This shows that BB decreases temperature of the skin exposed in the air probably due to the supply of water by washcloth.
