The patients' basic human needs, as well as those related to their diseases, have to be met. The aim of this study was to describe the contents of daily reports in two homes for the aged. The data was collected by tape-recording nursing staff's reports for four weeks period on two wards. The data was analysed by using content analysis. The contents were divided into messages. The results show that most of the discussions concerned daily activities and medical care. Some of the discussions fell within the categories of \"patients' opinions\" and \"mood\". Information was situation related. Patient's holistic care or supporting the patient's initiativeness in his daily activities were seldom discussed. The impression given on the nursing practice was task orientated and routinized.
","PeriodicalId":77161,"journal":{"name":"Hoitotiede","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"12662288","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The actual study group consisted of 349 workers from medical bed wards, first aid unit wards and bed wards for gynecology and obstetrics in a middle-sized hospital in the Helsinki region. Based on the factor analysis of separate questions, the following content areas were chosen for the job stressor scales: haste at work, problems in interpersonal relations at work, problems in occupational collaboration with others, too much responsibility, safety and health risks, lack of appreciation, troublesome patients, and lack of equipment and resources. Content areas for well-being scales and items were general job satisfaction, strain symptoms, perceived mental and physical work load. The reference values of the questionnaire and reliabilities for the scales were calculated. The application and further development of the questionnaire was discussed.
","PeriodicalId":77161,"journal":{"name":"Hoitotiede","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"12561911","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The article is based on the examples of authors' studies of nursing education and nursing practice. The grounded theory method is qualitative and inductive, analyzing data from the empirical world, from which categories and concepts are emerged. Analysis is made by coding and memorizing. The emerging categories will be structured, restructured and developed continually during the research process. In the final theory the concepts, the relationships between them and their internal and external differences are defined in the social process. The meaning of a good description of the research process is emphasized, because the evaluation of the research studies using grounded theory method are based on well documented research process.
","PeriodicalId":77161,"journal":{"name":"Hoitotiede","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"12783543","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"[Nursing needs of the elderly in hospital from the nurses' viewpoint].","authors":"L Lindvall","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

The human needs of elderly people in hospital were studied from the point of view of the nursing staff in order to describe how important nurses perceive the satisfaction of these needs to be, what kinds of needs they regard as significant or insignificant and what opportunities they have to influence their satisfaction. The data were collected using questionnaires, filled in by 130 nurses working in 14 geriatric wards in the hospital attached to a Health Centre. Human needs were evaluated on a scale based on the theory of human needs created by Yura and Walsh. The data were analysed by quantitative statistical methods: frequency and percentage distributions, cross tabulations and the Chi-Square test. The nurses regarded the satisfaction of human needs among the elderly as extremely or very important in most of the answers (70%) and as important in 27%. In only 3% did the nurses describe this aspect as being of little importance or insignificant. The satisfaction of many psychosociological and physiological needs was also regarded as extremely or very important. Nearly half of the nurses (49%) described the satisfaction of sexuality needs as important, a quarter (25%) as extremely or very important, and the remaining quarter (25%) regarded these needs as of little importance or insignificant.
","PeriodicalId":77161,"journal":{"name":"Hoitotiede","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"12726933","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The material was collected by means of questionnaires sent to 171 members of the nursing staff at the Departments of Internal Medicine and Neurology at Oulu University Hospital. Professional work-counselling was defined as a problem solving and interactional process also involving mental health support, the services of an expert in nursing and a process of increasing the knowledge and skills required in one's profession. Approximately one third of the respondents regarded the organization of activities promoting personal development as the goal, while one quarter held administrative professional counselling to be important, especially the development of cooperation between the various professional groups. 72% of the respondents were interested in professional work-counselling, and in their opinion the need for counselling is determined by the degree of pressure in one's work, difficult relationships with patients and their relatives, relationships between staff members, the demanding nature of nursing and the needs arising from this. Ward sisters, assistant ward sisters and specialized nurses considered professional work-counselling more necessary than did ordinary nurses and nursing auxiliaries. The counsellor is expected to treat matters confidentially and to possess interactional skills as much as expertise in the field of health care.
","PeriodicalId":77161,"journal":{"name":"Hoitotiede","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"12726935","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"[Knowledge and skills of newly graduated nurses].","authors":"R Nikkola, K Krause, I Kiikkala","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Nursing education was recently reformed in Finland. By now nurses who have graduated from the new programmes have already entered nursing practice. The purpose of this study is to describe the following two aspects: 1) How do the newly graduated nurses assess their own skills and knowledge on completion of their nursing studies and what is their assessment four months later? 2) What skills and knowledge did the nurse managers expect the nurses to have and what, in fact, did they discover when the new nurses began their work in practice? The data were collected by questionnaires, measuring the competencies of professional nurse (Clayton 1983) from a sample (N = 30), which consisted of registered nurses (response rate was 67%), specialized in medical-surgical nursing, and their nurse managers. The nurses had graduated from two different colleges of nursing. Data were analysed by the means and differences of the means. On completion of their studies the nurses felt that their best skills and knowledge were related to the hygienic care of the patient, while their weakest area was in implementing specialized care. In their assessment made four months after graduation the nurses felt that in terms of the different areas of nursing practice their skills and knowledge had improved to some degree. The nurse managers, on the other hand, expected the newly graduated nurses to have better skills and knowledge than what was actually discovered. Furthermore, the nurse managers were clearly more critical in their assessment than the nurses themselves.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
","PeriodicalId":77161,"journal":{"name":"Hoitotiede","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"12561912","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

What kind of opportunities as well as resources do the nurse notice that the patient has and how much does the nursing practice create possibilities for a patient to participate. The questionnaire developed was sent to special nurses, nurses, radiological nurses and specialized radiological nurses in clinics and wards of one university and six local hospitals (N = 125) in southwestern Finland. Seventy-one percent of respondents returned the questionnaire. The analysis of the data was based on percentual distributions, correlations and cross-tabulations. The main statistical analysis was made by using log-linear models. The meaning of breast cancer to a patient was seen to depend on patient's total life situation. The age, personality and values are imagined to effect how the person reacts in an illness situation. According to nurses patients have resources to participate in more active way in their care. The reasons set limits in patient's participation are seen to be unclear purposes in care and different kind of reasons based on health care staff, nursing practice, the organization and also patients.
","PeriodicalId":77161,"journal":{"name":"Hoitotiede","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"12783451","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
