This study was conducted in 12 nurses and 12 patients, to compare three methods of transferring patients from bed to wheelchair; (I) manual lifting, (II) an assistive device-a walking belt (with both one- and two-person transfers) and (III) a mechanical hoist. After completion of a given transfer, nurses were asked to rate the physical stress and how secure they felt the method was. Patients were asked to rate how secure and comfortable they felt. We also recorded the time required to make each transfer. The walking belt two persons had the most favourable ratings (the least stressful and most secure and comfortable), however transfers with this method took longer than those with the manual methods (although less than transfers with the hoist). Both nurses and patients rated one-person manual lifting as most stressful and least secure. Two-person transfer methods were preferred to the corresponding one-person methods. The hoist was the least suitable transfer method in view of the corresponding one-person methods. The hoist was the least suitable transfer method in view of the considerable physical stresses to the nurses, perceived lack of safety, discomfort for the patients and time involved.
","PeriodicalId":77147,"journal":{"name":"Giornale italiano di medicina del lavoro","volume":"15 5-6","pages":"139-44"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"18619426","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"[The psychosocial problems in a population of emigrant Italian workers].","authors":"M Monasevic, M Mattia, E Finozzi, R Fonte, G Biscaldi","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

The psycho-social problems of a group of 365 Italian emigrants to Switzerland, admitted to psychiatric hospitals, were studied. It was found that non professional subjects (housewives, unemployed, retired) and manual workers (builders, waiters, factory workers) were more likely to suffer from psycho-social disorders. Only 11.1% of those studied had received a secondary education, therefore it could be assumed that subjects having a low technical and cultural level were less prepared, psychologically, for their new situation and were thus more susceptible to psycho-social disorders. The most frequent diagnoses were found to be: affective disorders, alcohol addiction, opiate addiction and schizophrenia. The study revealed that emigrants ran a greater risk of first time admittance to psychiatric wards whereas the local population had a greater number of relapses. In conclusion it is stressed that assistance with an aim to improve work, social and relationship conditions and to integrate the emigrants into their host society can reduce some forms of psycho-social disorders.
","PeriodicalId":77147,"journal":{"name":"Giornale italiano di medicina del lavoro","volume":"15 5-6","pages":"109-15"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"18621410","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Biological markers of host susceptibility to air pollutants in epidemiologic studies on chronic airways obstruction.","authors":"W Jedrychowski, U Maugeri","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Measuring the variations in risk among individuals or populations of environmentally induced chronic airways obstruction is necessary to develop rational policy to reduce the incidence of those diseases in a given population. Before being able to formulate this policy, however, one must know how to detect those individuals who are susceptible to ari pollutants since they are at increased risk of disease. In the paper the authors discussed several monitoring techniques to detect markers of early biological events relevant to host susceptibility and disease progression. The biological markers are based on genetic traits, pulmonary function tests, biochemical and immune changes. The authors discuss merits and demerits of particular approaches in identifying persons prone to chronic airways obstruction. They stress the point that more research is needed on biochemical and immunological markers of lung injury to assess their usefulness in identifying individuals at higher risk.
","PeriodicalId":77147,"journal":{"name":"Giornale italiano di medicina del lavoro","volume":"15 5-6","pages":"153-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"18619431","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Subjects were videotaped during the activities while heart rate and subjective perception of effort were monitored. The videorecordings were then analyzed with two appropriate software, in order to identify activities at high risk for musculoskeletal injuries (\"Vision 3000\" program, Promatek Ltd., Montreal) and to evaluate energy expenditure (\"Energy\" program, University of Michigan). Validation of the energy expenditure indirect analysis system was done by monitoring oxygen consumption (VO2) with a portable telemetric oxygen uptake analyzer (\"K2\", Cosmed, Rome). No statistically significant differences were found between direct measurements of VO2 and laboratory-derived estimates of energy consumption. {"title":"Better perspectives on use of biological markers in monitoring of lung cancer risk in occupational settings.","authors":"W Jedrychowski, U Maugeri, I Bianchi","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Although conventional approaches in cancer epidemiology and prevention have provided a wealth of information, they are seriously limited in their ability to detect and evaluate carcinogenic hazards. However, traditional methods combined with newly developed laboratory procedures provide biological markers of molecular or biochemical events linked to carcinogen exposure and open a new approach to the study of human cancer risk assessment. The goal of the new approach is to identify as precisely as possible specific carcinogenic hazards in the environment, to assess their biologically effective dose and biological effect, and to provide a means of appraising host factors that modify susceptibility. A particular promising new tool of cancer risk assessment is the highly sensitive immunoassay for carcinogen-DNA adducts. These assays may provide a tissue dosimeter of carcinogen exposure. In this paper research studies were mentioned that aimed at assessing the levels of benzo[a]pyrene-DNA adducts and protein adducts, utilizing white blood cells, or tissue specimens obtained from tissue biopsy or autopsy. Another promising method in discovering BAP exposure are levels of carcinogen-metabolizing enzymes. The potential significance in surveillance and monitoring of aryl-hydrocarbon hydroxylase (AHH) has been discussed.
","PeriodicalId":77147,"journal":{"name":"Giornale italiano di medicina del lavoro","volume":"15 5-6","pages":"99-104"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"18620591","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Italian regulations with respect to the ISO, ACGIH, NIOSH guidelines and regulations of other European countries, do not supply any precise indications regarding the aforementioned aspects. The intent of the present study has been to verify if the same variables are able to discriminate the intake of alcohol also in a general population. The survey has been carried out on 510 subjects (224 males and 286 females), between 20 and 70 years old, living in a rural area in the North of Italy. Statistically relevant differences have been found amongst mean values of mean globular volume (VGM), containing hemoglobin (MCH), gamma-glutamil transferase (GGT), HDL cholesterol (ColHDL), tryglycerides, apoproteins-A (APO-A), serum glutamic-ossalacetic transaminase (SGOT), leukocyte, lead blood level in subgroups of population stratified according to drinking habits (heavy, moderate and medium drinkers). The discriminant function analysis, applied using all the 18 parameters as continuous variables, allows the correct classification of 57.84% of the cases amongst moderate, medium and heavy drinkers. The most influent selected variables result lead blood level, GGT, hematocrit and MCH. If we leave out the lead blood level (not weighted as a routine) the percentage falls to 52.35%. The analysis carried out on \"extreme\" groups (moderate and heavy drinkers) identifies as most influent the lead blood level, GGT, APO-A, and VGM variables, allowing the correct classification of 90.14% of the cases (83.39% excluding the lead blood level, selecting GGT, hematocrit, VGM and serum glutammic-piruvic transaminase. The anamnesis was gathered with a guided questionnaire: the questions concerned familiar and personnel pathology, use of detergents and cosmetics, use of means of prevention and therapies. Patch tests with haptens of GIRDCA series and with the most common detergent components were performed. In 98% of cases hands were the lace of beginning of symptoms; in the group of \"cases\" 46% were positive to at least one patch test. Nickel sulphate gave positivities in the 28% of cases. Results of the search of this metal (and of chrome and cobalt) in detergents are described. Other possible occasions of contact are described. {"title":"Power output during knee extension/flexion movement performed in controlled mechanical conditions.","authors":"M Bejor, R Lombardi, L Panella, L Ricciardi","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

In order to investigate how exercise, performed under controlled mechanical conditions, might be influenced by variables such as fatigue and immobilization, a computerized transducer system was specially built. Quadriceps femoris and knee flexors were studied in healthy non-athlete and post-meniscal surgery subjects, by means of an isokinetic extension-flexion protocol. The protocol was applied before and after cycloergometer \"fatiguing\" effort in the healthy subjects and before and after re-training in the surgical ones. An original software was able to display the time course of dynamic parameters, particularly force, velocity and power output. Results obtained showed a 26.5% significant decrease in power output after the effort, owing to a concomitant decrease in velocity, while force increased, but over a longer time. As to the operated subjects, power output was higher following retraining, as a result of the combination of lower force and higher velocity. The transducer system proved reliable in detecting changes in power output, whatever the cause. The instantaneous control of variables which power is depending upon, such as force and velocity, may give a few hints on the efficacy of training and rehabilitation programs.
","PeriodicalId":77147,"journal":{"name":"Giornale italiano di medicina del lavoro","volume":"15 5-6","pages":"105-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"18621408","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
