The contractile fibroblasts were observed in the immediate vicinity of, or in close contact with, the proliferating bile ductules and in the recesses between parenchymal cells. Transitional forms between fat-storing cells (Ito cells), fibroblasts and myofribroblasts were observed. Transition of fat-storing cells to myofibroblasts, possibly under the influence of oestrogens, may be responsible for the fibrosis and retraction in FNH.
","PeriodicalId":76799,"journal":{"name":"Virchows Archiv. Consistent with previous findings, erythroid hyperplasia of bone marrow and spleen occurred from 2 to 18 weeks after Ni3S2-treatment, resulting in pronounced erythrocytosis. Hitherto unreported effects of Ni3S2-treatment include: (a) marked glomerulomegaly and hyperplasia of mesangial cells in both kidneys; (b) hyperplasia of submandibular salivary glands, and (c) widespread arteriosclerotic lesions. The present study suggests that mesangial cells of renal glomeruli produce erythropoietin. Discovery that ir injection of Ni3S2 induces arteriosclerotic lesions in rats furnishes a new experimental model to investigate the pathogenesis of arteriosclerosis.
","PeriodicalId":76799,"journal":{"name":"Virchows Archiv. The lesion frequently develops in the cervical lymph nodes of young women. It is characterized by infiltration of the cortex and/or paracortex by large collections of proliferating histiocytes and is devoid of granulocytes. Complete or, more often, incomplete necrosis of lymphoid tissue is seen in all cases. In cases with incomplete necrosis, the histiocytes are interspersed with pyknotic cells and nuclear debris. Based on the histological findings, the term \"histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis without granulocytic infiltration\" is proposed. Lesions to be considered in a differential diagnosis are malignant histiocytic neoplasms and necrotizing lymphadenitis with granulocytic infiltration, which is seen in lupus erythematosus and bacterial infections. The aetiology of histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis without granulocytic infiltration is still unclear. Some clinical and histological features indicate the possibility of an underlying viral infection.
","PeriodicalId":76799,"journal":{"name":"Virchows Archiv. The chondrocyte like tumor cells of conventional CS. were characterized by: an ovoid shape, eccentric nucleus, abundant endoplasmic reticulum with dilated cisternae of RER; cytoplasmic glycogen, lipid droplets, and filaments plus numerous thin cytoplasmic projections. The histologically high grade tumors showed fewer cytoplasmic organelles, bizarre nuclei and more prominent nucleoli than the better differentiated ones. The tumor cells of myxoid CS. were chiefly fusiform. The cells frequently presented a pattern of rows with good cellular cohesion, and scanty cytoplasmic projections. The most prominent cytoplasmic feature was a conspicuous RER. Abundant cytoplasmic filaments and cytoplasmic glycogen were also observed. The undifferentiated areas of the mesenchymal CS. showed primitive mesenchymal cells with rounded nuclei, and scanty cytoplasm which was poor in organelles and glycogen. The cytoplasmic membranes were very cohesive and cytoplasmic projections were not present. Scanty cytoplasmic filaments and conspicuous desmosome like junctions were observed. The intercellular matrix of conventional and myxoid CS. consisted of fibrils, glycosaminoglycan granules and collagen fibers. In the undifferentiated zones of the mesenchymal CS. the intercellular matrix was very scanty and did not contain collagen fibrils. The more immature cells correspond to the small undifferentiated cells of mesenchymal chondrosarcoma.
","PeriodicalId":76799,"journal":{"name":"Virchows Archiv. Within the normal breast the luminal epithelial cells expressing the antigens detected by the monoclonal antibodies were heterogeneous in their distribution. The heterogeneity was not only confined to single cells, but also to regions within the breast. The breast carcinomas also expressed the antigens in a variable manner. Morphological differentiation and functional differentiation, defined by the monoclonal antibodies, were not invariably coincident. Lymph node metastases gave similar results to the primary carcinomas. The monoclonal antibodies have revealed a heterogeneity, with respect to surface antigenic expression, within the normal and neoplastic breast epithelium. This cellular heterogeneity of breast carcinomas, may have significant prognostic and therapeutic implications in the management of primary breast cancer.
","PeriodicalId":76799,"journal":{"name":"Virchows Archiv. The contractile protein composition of these samples was determined electrophoretically. 18 cases were studied, grouped as follows: Group I, composed of 5 cases showing normal hearts which were employed in the determination of normal electrophoretic values. Group II: 10 cases with hypertrophic hearts, 1 of them showing contraction bands and decreased myosin, 6 others with fibrillolytic lesions of which 3 presented a decrease in myosin and 3 possessed normal myosin values. None of the cases showed a decrease in actin values. Group III was composed of 3 cases of hearts with normal weights that showed ultrastructural alterations of the myofibrils: 1 with myofibrillar disarray and normal electrophoretic values, 1 with incomplete contraction bands and normal protein values and 1 with focal myofibrillar disgregation and myosin decrease. It is concluded that in some cases of degenerative fibrillolytic lessions a decrease of myosin occurs. The method employed does not rule out that apparently normal actin and myosin values might be due to the presence of contractile proteins in a denatured state that does not affect their electrophoretic mobility.
","PeriodicalId":76799,"journal":{"name":"Virchows Archiv. This case report describes the light and electron microscopic features of a biphasic synovial sarcoma occurring within the popliteal fossa. At surgery, a cystic mass was identified in relationship to the semitendinosus tendon at the anatomical site of the semitendinosus bursa. The tumour originated from the inner surface of the bursa as multiple papillary projections with no evidence of extension beyond the capsule of the bursa. Portions of the synovial surface were hyperplastic but otherwise normal. The findings indicate that biphasic synovial sarcoma can arise directly from synovium and support the hypothesis of a mesenchymal histogenesis for this tumour.
","PeriodicalId":76799,"journal":{"name":"Virchows Archiv.
