A two-phase study was done to identify the prevalence of tobacco abuse and to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of planned teaching programme in terms of knowledge, attitude and practice among the support staff in a selected hospital in New Delhi. During phase-I of the study, 200 support staff were selected based on total enumeration sampling technique. Structured tools containing socio-demographic variables, prevalence assessment tool, knowledge questionnaire, attitude scale, and practice scale were administered as a pre-test. During phase-II of the study, administration of the planned teaching programme was done for all the 200 support staff. A post-test was conducted for 66 tobacco abusers identifi ed during phase-I of the study based on the prevalence. The study results revealed that the prevalence rate of tobacco abuse among the support staff was 33 percent. Out of this 33 percent of the tobacco abusers, 26.5 percent were smokeless tobacco users and 6 percent were smoking tobacco abusers. The mean difference of pre-test and post-test knowledge, attitude, and practice scores were found out to be 2.95, 1.99, and 0.69 respectively. The planned teaching programme was effective in increasing the knowledge score of the tobacco abusers but there was no effect of PTP on attitude and practice score. The demographic variables such as age, sex, gender, educational qualifi cation, marital status, and monthly income were found to be signifi cantly associated with tobacco abuse among the support staff","PeriodicalId":76706,"journal":{"name":"The Nursing journal of India","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85606962","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It affects half of all female adolescents today and represents the leading cause of college/school absenteeism among that population. It was sought to assess the effectiveness of acupressure Vs reflexology on premenstrual syndrome among adolescents. Two-group pre-test and post-test true experimental design was adopted for the study. Forty adolescent girls from Government Girls Secondary School, Erode with premenstrual syndrome fulfilling the inclusion criteria were selected by simple random sampling. A pretest was conducted by using premenstrual symptoms assessment scale. Immediately after pre-test acupressure Vs reflexology was given once a week for 6 weeks and again post-test was conducted to assess the effectiveness of treatment. Collected data was analysed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. In post-test, the mean score of the experimental group I sample was 97.3 (SD= 2.5) and the group II mean score was 70.8 (SD = 10.71) with paired t value of 19.2 and 31.9. This showed that the reflexology was more effective than acupressure in enhancing the practice of the sample regarding pre-menstrual syndrome. Statistically no significant association was found between the post-test scores of the sample with their demographic variables. The findings imply the need for educating adolescent girls on effective management of pre-menstrual syndrome","PeriodicalId":76706,"journal":{"name":"The Nursing journal of India","volume":"68 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88822164","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite numerous community interventions and government legislation against smoking, cessation or prevention of tobacco smoking is still challengeable. Literature suggests that strong self-changing behaviours of smokers, facilitate the process of quit smoking. The aim of this cross sectional study was to explore self-changing strategies to quit smoking among current smokers in a selected rural population at Bangalore. A sample size of 35 from general population were conveniently selected to complete a Self-Changing Strategies of Current Smokers (SCS-CS) questionnaire about commitment to change, taking control, risk assessment, helping relationship and coping with temptation to quit smoking. Amongst all the participants (n=35) none of the females were identified. Around 12 (34.3%) of male study subjects smoked more than 10 times per day. Nearly three-fourth of current smokers (n= 25, 71.4%) never had previous quit attempts. Commitment to change strategy (mean 11.11±2.73) was high among subjects, (80% often thought to stop smoking) which facilitated to strengthen their pre-contemplation stage of change process. In-contrary participants were weak in coping process. Greater part (n=21, 60%) of the subjects ‘never’ keep themselves busy to overcome the urge to smoke thus failing to achieve the maintenance stage in change process (mean 5.57±2.83). Continuous followup and frequent cessation programme would aid to boost up the self-change strategies to quit smoking. Mental health professionals such as psychiatry nurses actively implementing the smoking cessation intervention in every care settings will increase the successful quitting.","PeriodicalId":76706,"journal":{"name":"The Nursing journal of India","volume":"17 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87951702","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
