In 5,540 censuses, less than 5% of the plants hosted caterpillars. All the caterpillars found, a total of 55 species in 15 families were reared under laboratory conditions. Pyralidae, Geometridae, Elachistidae, Megalopygidae, and Limacodidae were the richest caterpillar families recorded. Of the 55 species, more than 40% were polyphagous, feeding on different host plant families, while 21 were considered rare species with less than four records during the study period. The species' rareness did not permit any analysis of diet breadth. The presence of latex in the host plants seems to affect both the proportion of host plants with caterpillars (abundance) and the caterpillar species richness. The habit of eating plants that characteristically produce latex occurs in several distantly-related lepidopteran families. The results support the argument that specific behaviors to circumvent plant latex defense may have arisen independently many times in the Lepidoptera.</p>","PeriodicalId":76429,"journal":{"name":"Revista brasileira de biologia","volume":"59 4","pages":"627-35"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1590/s0034-71081999000400012","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"31317204","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present study has identified and quantified the presence of cyanobacteria in the Patos Lagoon estuary, particularly of M. aeruginosa. During this survey, identification and quantification of the main phytoplankton groups were done in relation to geographical distribution in the estuary. The presence of M. aeruginosa colonies in the estuarine region confirmed their superficial distribution throughout the estuarine waters during twelve months with a maximum of 1, 3.10(6) cells. L-1 in December, 1994 and a minimum of 1, 5.10(5) cells. L-1 in August, 1995 and also confirmed that M. aeruginosa originated from waters in the north of the estuary. The period of the highest cell and colonies densities was coincident with high chlorophyll-a levels in surface waters. Toxicity of M. aeruginosa bloom material was determined by bioassay and concentrations of hepatotoxins microcystins were identified by HPLC-DAD. M. aeruginosa blooms were considered highly toxic, presenting a 24 h-LD50 lower than 100 mg.Kg-1 b.w. and a toxin content higher than 1 microgram.mg-1 d.w. Treatments (n = 4) were: 2.5, 5, 10, and 15.0% FBS or FE and 5/2.5, 5/5, 10/2.5, and 10/5 of a FBS/FE combination as supplement to the growth medium, or the addition of 0.1, 1, 2.5, 10, 25, and 75 ng/ml of either IGF-I or FGF to the growth media. Initial cell density was 1.1 x 10(6) cells per well on uncoated 24-well plates. Incubation temperature was 29.5 +/- 0.7 degrees C. Six hours after plating, initial culture medium was removed, plates rinsed with Dulbecco's phosphate buffered saline, treatment media added, and cells allowed to proliferate for 24 hours. Another bioassay was performed with rat myoblast omega cells (RMo) using the same levels of growth medium supplemented with FBS, FE and FBS/FE. Base growth medium was Dulbecco's MEM. The initial cell density was 7.2 x 10(6) cells per well, and the bioassay was carried out at 36.0 +/- 0.5 degrees C, on a 95% air, 5% CO2 incubator. Increasing levels of FBS had a positive effect (P < 0.05) on the proliferation of both BB and RMo cells. Increasing levels of FE had a negative effect (P < 0.05) on the proliferation of BB cells and totally inhibited the proliferation of RMo cells at any level of supplementation. Higher levels of FE on the FBS/FE combinations presented a negative effect on the proliferation of both BB and RMo cells (P < 0.05). Insulin-like growth factor I had a positive quadratic effect (P < 0.05) on the proliferation of BB cells. Apparently, mammalian growth factors slightly stimulated mitogenic activity in fish cells, while FE contained factors which inhibited the mitogenic activity of RMo and BB cell lines.</p>","PeriodicalId":76429,"journal":{"name":"Revista brasileira de biologia","volume":"59 3","pages":"517-25"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1590/s0034-71081999000300017","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"21616226","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mucus of body surface and pieces of organs were collected and examined microscopically, in wet mounts, stained or in histological sections. The smears examination showed the presence of several spores in the secondary lamellae of the gill filaments, identified as Henneguya leporinicola n.sp (Myxozoa: Myxobolidae). Histopathological study showed epithelial hyperplasia and fulfilling of the spaces between the secondary lamellae, congestion and telangiectasia sinusoidal. It was also observed hyperplasia of the goblet cells and several cysts of parasite with 70.3 microns diameter. Such cysts were situated among the secondary lamellae, covered or not by the hyperplasic epithelium. With this diagnostic, three applications of formalin solution 10 ml/m3 were carried out. Fifteen days after that, fish were examined again to ascertain whether the treatment was efficient on disease caused by the protozoa. O processo de FHN excede o processo de desnitrificacao nesse sistema. Os processos de FHN e de desnitrificacao foram maiores em raizes do que em colmos de O. glumaepatula , porem nenhuma correlacao foi encontrada entre estas taxas e a profundidade da agua. The benthic macroinvertebrates were collected with a core and the abiotic variables that were measured were: dissolved oxygen, suspended material, depth, transparency (secchi disc), temperature of the water column and total nitrogen, available phosphorus and organic matter in the sediment. With the use of a Principal Components Analysis (PCA), we were able to show that the sampling sites differed regarding the abiotic variables, especially total-N, available-P and organic matter in the sediment, all of which were found in greater concentrations in the natural areas. The PCA concerning the benthic macroinvertebrate community also distinguished the natural sites from the impacted one. The impacted site was positively grouped with the Ephemeroptera (Campsurus sp.) and the natural sites were grouped together with the Chironomidae, Chaoboridae, Oligochaeta and Bivalvia. The results achieved in this research made clear that the sites under influence of the bauxite tailings had alterations of their abiotic characteristics and of their benthic macroinvertebrate structure.","PeriodicalId":76429,"journal":{"name":"Revista brasileira de biologia","volume":"59 1","pages":"397-405"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1590/S0034-71081999000300004","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67176194","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is bordered by a discontinued and narrow belt of mangrove trees. Mangrove forests have a high structural variability. Of the eighteen stands studied there are monospecifics stands of Laguncularia racemosa with dbh between 3.4 and 7.7 cm and height between 4.5 and 7.7 m, dominated by trees with dbh less than 10.0 cm. At the other stands, occur mixed forests, structuraly more developed, sometimes dominated by Laguncularia racemosa, sometimes by Rhizophora mangle (dbh between 7.8 and 16.7 cm; height between 6.8 and 16.1 m, prevailing trees with dbh greater than 10.0 cm). There are also mixed stands dominated by Avicenia schaueriana (dbh of 7.1 cm and 5.3 m high, predominating individuals over 10.0 cm in dbh). The structural variability observed, is strong evidence of an altered landscape. Observations on mangrove forests at southeastern Brazil show that stands dominated by Laguncularia racemosa with low dbh are typical of degraded sites in process of restoration. The structure that is quite close to that of the original forest is represented by the most developed stands (high dbh and height). One of the studied stands, with mature forest of Rhizophora mangle, high developed for the structural patterns of mangrove at the southeastern Brazil is jeopardized by the invasion of Acrostichum sp., wich is preventing the development of R.mangle saplings. This invasion is related to a high deposition of mud, wich rose the substrate, reducing tide inundation.","PeriodicalId":76429,"journal":{"name":"Revista brasileira de biologia","volume":"59 1","pages":"503-515"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1590/S0034-71081999000300016","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67176815","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
