The floristic and some ecological aspects were analised. The samples were collected during the following periods: dry, begining of the rainy season and rainy. Besides the phytoplancton, some abiot parameter were mensured (pH, oxygen, temperature, nitrate, nitrite, alkalinity, chlorite, turbity, BDO e precipitation), 77 taxa belonging to taxonomic classes were recognized and 37 taxa was recorded for the first time to State of Goias. Chlorophyceae was the most representative class. During rainy period the greatest richness was registered, with 11 abundant taxa. In contrast, at the begining of the rainy season the highest phytoplanktonic density was observed (13,590 ind/ml) with 18 abundant taxa, in special Nephrochlamys allantoidea (Chlorophyceae) and Phacus dangeardi (Euglenophyceae). The water was warm (24o-26o), lightly acid through alkalin and meso to oligotrophic.","PeriodicalId":76429,"journal":{"name":"Revista brasileira de biologia","volume":"11 1","pages":"377-395"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1590/S0034-71081999000300003","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67176080","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Artisanal fisheries are important economic activity in the region. Spatial and seasonal distribution and relative abundance of marine catfish, based on the number and weight of fish catched per sample (Catch per Unit Effort = CPUE) were assessed based on 151 otter trawl sampling in seven sampling sites in the Sepetiba Bay, between July 1993 and June 1996. For spatial comparisons, the study area was devised in an inner zone, located in the inner Bay and an outer zone, near to the sea limit. Environmental parameters of surface and bottom water temperature and salinity, transparency and depth were recorded at each sampling. A spatial variation pattern, assessed by multivariate methods, is shown with higher depths and transparencies in the outer bay and lower in the inner bay, while salinity seems to decrease slightly toward the inner bay. Only temperature showed seasonal variation. Five marine catfish species were recorded in the following order of decreasing numerical abundance: Genidens genidens (Valenciennes, 1839), Cathorops spixii (Agassiz, 1829) Sciadeichthys luniscutis (Valenciennes, 1840), Netuma barba (Lacepede, 1803) and Bagre marinus (Mitchill, 1814).The top four abundant marine catfish occur in higher abundance in the inner Bay, with indication of spatial separation within this area. G. genidens was abundant over all sampling sites in the inner Bay, while C. spixii showed a narrower distribution in this area. N. barba concentrated near to Guandu River estuary, and S. luniscutis showed an ample distribution over all the Bay. Seasonally was not marked for all species. Strategies of spatial separation may be explaining the coexistence of marine catfish in high abundance in the Sepetiba Bay, which is used as fish rearing area mainly due the low depths and transparencies, favorable conditions to their early life cycle development.","PeriodicalId":76429,"journal":{"name":"Revista brasileira de biologia","volume":"59 1","pages":"443-454"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1590/S0034-71081999000300009","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67176451","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Then, relationships of body size and sexual dimorfism of natural populations of the white-eared opossum, Didelphis albiventris, and of the common opossum, D. marsupialis, were studied in two mixed forests of Curitiba, southern Brazil, between February 1995 and February 1997. As a result, there was a strong relationship among the teeth emergence, weight and several body measures obtaIned from opossums. Hence, measures as the head length may be used to estimate other measures of the body. Sexual dimorfism was also verified in relation to the body size and the head shape for the common opossum. Adult females of the white-eared opossum proved to be bigger than adult females of the common opossum. Besides, some individuals of both species had an increase in their weight during the autumn probably to support the low food available season. However, the white-eared opossum usually storages more fat that the common opossum in any season. Therefore, the adaptative strategies of both species revealed different among themselves in southern Brazil and probably are results of different life histories, despite their related kinship.","PeriodicalId":76429,"journal":{"name":"Revista brasileira de biologia","volume":"59 1","pages":"461-469"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1590/S0034-71081999000300011","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67176636","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Visual estimation was performed in two sizes of sampling device and, point intercept quadrats was done with different numbers of marked dots. The sampling took place on the rocky shore of Forno beach, Buzios, RJ, in two different algae belts; one whose the landscape is characterized by Amphiroa sp., the other, Sargassum furcatum was the most conspicuous species. The data were analyzed by ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests. Number of species, total percent cover, diversity and evenness indices were the variables used. The results shown that in general the methods compared were not statistically different one from the other in this community. There were significative differences between the methods when comparison was made between non-destructive and destructive sampling. However, smaller areas of sampling devices and fewer intercept points decreased the sampling power in respect of sampling species richness. All of the methods studied were considered similar in concern of total cover index and of diversity and evenness indices, with some exceptions. Present data are useful only for rocky communities with similar profiles. The choice of method must be made in regard of each situation.","PeriodicalId":76429,"journal":{"name":"Revista brasileira de biologia","volume":"59 1","pages":"407-419"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1590/S0034-71081999000300005","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67176665","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
