None of them were subjected to modern methods of study. A 26 year-old woman with untreated primary hypothyroidism developed a pituitary tumour which produced bitemporal hemianopsia. Histochemical and ultrastructural studies characterized the tumour cells as thyrotrops. The secretory granules present had a mean diameter of 110 mum and were membrane-bound and surrounded by clear halos. Many of the tumour cells were actively secreting. They had reduced numbers of granules, possessed expanded Golgi complexes, abundant rough endoplasmic reticulum and free ribosomes. Cytoplasmic microfilaments were also seen. A possible mechanism of production of this tumour is discussed.
","PeriodicalId":76308,"journal":{"name":"Pathologia Europaea","volume":"11 1","pages":"49-55"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1976-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"12117129","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
{"title":"Modern ideas on chromosome structure.","authors":"H G Schwarzacher","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

The structural element of an eukaryotic chromosome is the so-called chromatin fibre. It is a DNA-protein complex of about 100-200 A thickness and most probably running through from one end of a chromatid to the other. The fine structure of this DNA-protein fibre suggests a core of globular histone subunits around which the DNA-molecule is wound. The single strandedness of chromatids is suggested by the structure of premature condensed chromosomes. The course G-banding seen in metaphase chromosomes is presumably caused by groups of much finer bands seen in decondensed chromosomes. The number of such fine bands in the human genome is estimated to be 10 000-100 000, figures which are in the range of the number of genes in man.
","PeriodicalId":76308,"journal":{"name":"Pathologia Europaea","volume":"11 1","pages":"5-13"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1976-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"12117130","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The percentage of inhibition reached practically 100% after 18 hours of treatment at 37 degrees C. More prolonged treatment resulted in an eradication of the organisms from the cell monolayers. In contrast, similar doses of spiramycin were quite ineffective against intracellular toxoplasma. The active doses of cotrimoxazole used were not harmful for cell cultures. Cotrimoxazole also destroyed clones (rosaces) of toxoplasma which were formed during the past 18 hours of intracellular replication in the absence of the drug. Trimethoprim was the only effective compound of cotrimoxazole on intracellular parasites; the adjunction of sulfamethoxazole produced a marked synergistic effect. The present findings confirm the great efficiency of cotrimoxazole in the treatment of experimental toxoplasmosis in mice performed previously in this laboratory.
","PeriodicalId":76308,"journal":{"name":"Pathologia Europaea","volume":"10 4","pages":"307-15"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1975-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"12385457","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The k index on the thrombelastogram decreases significantly following angiotensin II infusion in pressor doses both in the hypertensive patients with urinary infection and in those without urinary infection. At the same time, angiotensin II infusion in pressor and subpressor doses determines a significant increase of epsilon index in both hypertensive patients with urinary infection and in those without urinary infection. These results pose the problem of thrombocyte sensitization by the urinary infection to the vasopressor substance.
