They contend this infantilization and marginalization has led to mistrust, as well as constant confrontation. Such confrontation involved elders and political elites, on the one hand, and youth, on the other hand. Some of those encounters lead to loss of lives. While in 2010 the new democratic dispensation ushered in hope and promises of change, it appears that very little has been achieved. There is the perception among the youth that the government is, in fact, entrenching the prevailing status quo. This article critically analyzes the voices and expressions of Guinea’s youth in their search for inclusion and participation in leadership, as well as the decision-making processes in their country. It also juxtaposes the views of youth against those of elders and political elites. Overall, it seems that the existing mistrust, fear, and doubt on the part of the youth may have negative implications for Guinea’s nascent democracy.","PeriodicalId":7615,"journal":{"name":"African Conflict & Peacebuilding Review","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90709718","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The capabilities of forensic anthropological interventions have been debated in anthropological literature, often restrictively framed in terms of medico-legal or humanitarian endeavors. I argue that forensic anthropology should be reframed into an integrated approach that is informed by context-specific information, the presence of other interventions, and grave-related concerns. Specifically, this research relies on ethnographic data collected from two districts in northern Uganda in 2016 that are experiencing psychosocial, spiritual, economic, and other negative impacts related to improper burials from the Lord’s Resistance Army conflict. This reveals an overlooked capability of the field to contribute to the pursuit of sustainable peace through local level engagement—a rising concern in related literatures of transitional justice, peacebuilding, and anthropologies of violence.","PeriodicalId":7615,"journal":{"name":"African Conflict & Peacebuilding Review","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87576000","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The thin line between the two forms of violence has perplexed—if not puzzled—pundits and political scientists studying the Somali state and society. This reflection raises two sets of questions: does state violence have a more distinctive character (in)visibility than clan violence? If so, what are the causes and consequences of these separate wars? This paper interrogates the persistent violence and the connections between state and clan violence. To fill this gap, the article offers a detailed discussion of Somali violence by arguing that state violence in the 1970s and 1980s created conditions for clan violence in the 1990s. In doing so, the article makes a clear conceptual distinction between state and clan violence. State violence carried out on a clan level, but instigated by state authorities, constituted a constant feature of the state during the era of the military regime of General Mohamed Siad Barre (1969–91).","PeriodicalId":7615,"journal":{"name":"African Conflict & Peacebuilding Review","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76654609","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Devolution’s stated aim is to better address the local needs of Kenyans. This article attempts to gauge the extent to which devolution has been implemented at the county/local level by comparing expectations and reality, highlighting successes and locating current challenges. It uses Mandera County as a case study. This article argues that Mandera County ought to have experienced significant economic development because of the accrual of substantial funds and political power since devolution was instituted. However, our findings indicate that graft, corruption, and misallocation of political and economic resources have largely conspired to stunt Mandera County’s ability to take advantage of the stated aims of devolution. The results are valid and generalizable, in some cases, for Kenya’s other counties.","PeriodicalId":7615,"journal":{"name":"African Conflict & Peacebuilding Review","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80976887","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It examines the evolution of CJTF as a local initiative response to security challenges, which can be an effective way to defeat the insurgency. On many occasions, CJTF has been useful in spotting Boko Haram insurgents, repelling attacks, and liberating towns and villages captured by Boko Haram. In addition, this group has been a vital link in the intelligence gathering network necessary for successful Special Military Joint Task Force (SMJTF) operations. The purpose of this paper is to critically analyze the contribution of CJTF in counter-insurgency operations in Borno state and investigate whether CJTF could be a useful approach to counter-insurgency in Nigeria.","PeriodicalId":7615,"journal":{"name":"African Conflict & Peacebuilding Review","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84098601","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, international interventions have had mixed outcomes in the areas of security, human rights, and humanitarian assistance. Similarly, there has not been much success in eradicating jihadist terrorism or in reconciling the country’s North and South. This multifaceted power-sharing strategy was utilized within both the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), designed to resolve Sudan’s intractable North-South conflict, as well as the 2015 Agreement on the Resolution of the Crisis in South Sudan (ARCISS) that addressed a continuation of intra-South violence. This study investigates the breakdown between the expected outcome of this power-sharing model and its implementation. Despite the international community’s stated objective of building a post-conflict order in which these four levers of state power are guided by liberal democratic principles, South Sudan’s peace processes have descended into an elite bargain over how the spoils of patronage are dispersed. This divergence is explained by the interference of strategic interests at the national, regional, and global levels.","PeriodicalId":7615,"journal":{"name":"African Conflict & Peacebuilding Review","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83486848","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The press stands as a watchdog of society so much so that the government respects its engagement with the people. Whenever the government faults, the press exposes it. Since the reunification of West and East Cameroons in 1961, the former has been complaining of maltreatment by the latter. Considering the pivotal role played by the Anglophone press in addressing this problem, this paper argues that it is the main advocate of the Anglophone case in Cameroon, standing as the vanguard of Anglophone society.","PeriodicalId":7615,"journal":{"name":"African Conflict & Peacebuilding Review","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88021180","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study examines the interrelationship between environmental insecurity and poverty in the oil-bearing areas of the Niger Delta region with a special focus on Ilaje in Ondo. Data were derived through interviews with key informants, focus group discussions (FGD), and extant literature. Overall, environmental dislocation has not only engendered poverty in oil-bearing communities, it has also fueled conflict and violent attacks on oil facilities by the aggrieved local people, leading to a vicious cycle of environmental insecurity, the erosion of livelihoods, and poverty in the Niger Delta region.","PeriodicalId":7615,"journal":{"name":"African Conflict & Peacebuilding Review","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79579121","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Civilians have taken to the streets and the first half of 2016 was characterized by protests. The crisis has its roots deeper in Zimbabwe’s postcolonial history, escalating with the adoption of a controversial land reform program in 2000. From hyper-inflation in 2008, the nation turned to a serious liquidity crunch within eight years. The situation has not been helped by growing unemployment, informalization of the economy, and a polarized political landscape. The population has thus been exposed to both structural and system violence. In addition to macro violence, there are growing youth subcultures that feed into violence in Zimbabwe. One notable example is Zimdancehall, which has become a major artistic and musical phenomenon in the country. This article examines the way Zimdancehall adds another layer of violence to Zimbabwe. In particular, we focus on the micro aspect of Zimdancehall violence and the missed opportunity for this music genre to become an instrument for peacebuilding.","PeriodicalId":7615,"journal":{"name":"African Conflict & Peacebuilding Review","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85719115","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
