The Anglophone Press in Cameroon: Mediating the Anglophone Problem

Abstract

abstract:In Cameroon the press is usually nicknamed the fourth power, after the executive, legislature, and judiciary. The press stands as a watchdog of society so much so that the government respects its engagement with the people. Whenever the government faults, the press exposes it. Since the reunification of West and East Cameroons in 1961, the former has been complaining of maltreatment by the latter. Considering the pivotal role played by the Anglophone press in addressing this problem, this paper argues that it is the main advocate of the Anglophone case in Cameroon, standing as the vanguard of Anglophone society.
