My purpose here is to bring together several research strands to provide a theoretical model for working in this field, including theories of sex offending, developmental theories for offending, and work on quality of life. In addition to dealing with issues of sex offending, researchers should also investigate developmental and societal issues crucial in the genesis of sex offending and offending in general. Because societal issues are also important for treatment, engagement and identification with society are suggested. Quality of life and issues directly related to sex offending are of central importance.</p>","PeriodicalId":76152,"journal":{"name":"Mental retardation","volume":"43 6","pages":"428-41"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1352/0047-6765(2005)43[428:MUTFSO]2.0.CO;2","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"25683144","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Drawing upon a survey of 83 adults with intellectual disabilities, we examined factors affecting use for three key electronic technologies: computer, Internet, and electronic organizers. Forty-one percent of participants used a computer; 25%, the Internet; and 11%, electronic organizers. Age, work setting, and self-perceived ability to manually copy information affected likelihood of use. Primary barriers reported by participants included lack of access, training and support, and expense of technologies. Interest in using such technologies was high, and participants offered suggestions for improved accessibility.</p>","PeriodicalId":76152,"journal":{"name":"Mental retardation","volume":"43 5","pages":"322-33"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1352/0047-6765(2005)43[322:UOETBP]2.0.CO;2","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"25275460","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After all, Grossman (1972) published her landmark study of collegeaged siblings more than 3 decades ago. Since that time, numerous investigators have examined sibling feelings, functioning, and relationships. Meyer and Vadasy (1994) have produced ‘‘sibshops’’ to help siblings, and both popular (McHugh, 2003) and scholarly (Stoneman & Berman, 1993) books have appeared in which authors described issues involved in growing up as a sibling of a brother or sister with disabilities. Despite such advances, however, research on siblings of individuals with disabilities remains underdeveloped. As Stoneman (2005) noted, many researchers have produced one or two sibling studies, but, except for some of the contributors to this special issue, few investigators are primarily identified as ‘‘sibling researchers.’’ Sibling studies are also beset with difficult methodological, statistical, and practical issues, and many topics have not been examined. Ironically, this underdeveloped field exists within the context of demographic changes that highlight sibling relationships. Consider the issue of aging. Like the overall general population, persons with disabilities are living increasingly longer lives. Currently, 526,000 Americans with disabilities are 60 years or older and that number is expected to triple—to over 1.5 million—by 2030 (National Center for Family Support, 2000). Given that 60% of these adults are cared for by aging parents in the family home, who will take care of them when their parents no longer can? Adult siblings of adults with disabilities are the assumed future caregivers, but the needs of adult siblings have remained relatively unexplored. Faced with this discrepancy between an underdeveloped field and an important social issue, we decided to edit a special section of Mental Retardation devoted to siblings of persons with disabilities. Our goal is to stimulate additional research by identifying themes that highlight current challenges and future directions. To that aim, we described six themes in this article.","PeriodicalId":76152,"journal":{"name":"Mental retardation","volume":"43 5","pages":"334-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1352/0047-6765(2005)43[334:SSOSEB]2.0.CO;2","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"25275462","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
