Komasa","doi":"10.18905/JODU.51.2_131","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.18905/JODU.51.2_131","url":null,"abstract":"In order to serve the increasing elderly population, gerontological dental education is recently being given to provide understanding of the needs of the elderly, and nurture healthcare professionals who can provide reliable and safe services for them. In order to actively communicate with elderly patients, and clarify related challenges, it is necessary for healthcare professionals to adopt detailed support measures for them, and show empathy based on their understanding of the elderly, their changing needs and their own self­awareness. The recent in­ crease in the number of nuclear families has mark­ edly reduced opportunities for the younger genera­ tion to communicate with the elderly, making it diffi­ cult to understand their needs and emotions. Al­ though students learn about age­related physical and psychological changes through school lectures, such knowledge on its own is insufficient to under­ stand the elderly, and develop empathy for them. Experience­based learning has been reported ef­ fective in enhancing understanding of their needs. Aging simulation­based training, which provides an opportunity to experience physical changes in the elderly, has been suggested to promote psychologi­ cal empathy and provide an opportunity to learn how to support their needs. For these reasons, it has been actively adopted in nursing education to promote smooth communication with the elderly. An aging simulation­based training program was launched in the Department of Geriatric Dentistry at Osaka Dental University in fiscal year 2001 as part of preclinical practice prior to clinical training in hos­ pitals for fourth­year students who have completed their basic dental education. We adopted natural language analysis techniques to examine the use­ fulness of this training by analyzing free descrip­ tions submitted by students after completion of the program through text mining. Nakajima, Junko Tanaka, Masahiro Tanaka","doi":"10.18905/JODU.51.2_73","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.18905/JODU.51.2_73","url":null,"abstract":"A favorable esthetic appearance of the teeth is strongly desired by patients nowadays, and new esthetic materials and treatment methods have been developed and clinically applied. 3 However, the way in which people look at others’ teeth cur­ rently remains unknown. A psychologist, Yarbus, reported that when images of the face were pre­ sented to subjects, their lines of sight were concen­ trated on the region around the eyes ; however, the lips were closed in those images, and the gaze point for closed­lip and smiling facial photographs is unclear. Studies on esthetic consciousness relating to teeth have mainly been performed using subjec­ tive evaluations, such as questionnaires. 5­12 Ques­ tionnaire surveys reported that most people felt that the appearance of the mouth was important for jobs, and considered white teeth to be ideal. Regarding the interest in esthetics relating to the mouth, no image has clearly been recognized as favorable. The level of demand for each esthetic element is determined by age, and varies markedly among individuals. 7 Interest in esthetics relating to teeth is subjective and diverse ; therefore, it is diffi­ cult to express criteria observed in esthetic ques­ tionnaire surveys in numerical forms. However, analysis of the line of sight using eye­tracking has recently been applied in various fields. Eye­ tracking is a method used to acquire information re­ garding the site gazed at, the duration of gazing, and the order of gazing, by tracking the subjects’ line of sight. Because unconscious movement of the line is also measured, human behavior not ob­ servable by a questionnaire or interview can be in­ vestigated. People generally shift their lines of sight to an object of interest and form its image at the central fovea, the area on the retina with the best vision, i.e., central vision, and collect visual in­ formation. Furthermore, the visual cognitive behav­ ior of humans can be investigated by measuring gaze point movements because the direction of the line of sight is mostly consistent with the site of the gaze point. Identifying the facial area where people are look­ ing requires investigation of their interest in each facial region by quantifying unconscious gazing. However, a classroom contains a large variety of students with various learning abilities, and the teachers would like all of them to under­ stand all aspects of the lectures. It would be helpful if each teacher understood the academic potential of each student. Unfortunately, this is not realistic. However, reports have stated that a student’s seat­ ing location in the classroom is associated with his or her academic performance. Giles et al. noted that there seemed to be a direct relationship be­ tween examination results and the distance of the student’s seat from the front of the classroom. They found that students in the front, middle, and back rows of the lecture theater achieved marks of 80%, 71.6%, and 68.1%, respectively.
