{"title":"An epidemiologic-immunological inquiry into the incidence of altered immunity in children of school age.","authors":"V Zavázal, V Wagner, M Wagnerová, J Kríz","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

The authors examined 536 children 10 years of age to evaluate their immune status and the development of allergies and recurrent respiratory inflammations. Altered resistance was found in as many as 47% of children, pollen allergy and atopic eczema in at least 10.5%, habitual rhinitis in 15.2%, asthma in 3.5% and recurrent inflammatory infections in 13.1%. A higher rate of alterations was found where environmental conditions were deteriorated. Elevated IgE, changes in IgG, IgA and IgM as well as increased levels of acute phase proteins suggest a relationship between the degree of immune impairment and clinical manifestations. Our results imply there are large numbers of children with altered immunity and point to the fact that in common practice only 14% of them are attended to by the clinical immunologist and thus receive causal treatment. It is therefore concluded that, in line with the expansion of noxious factors which accompany our civilization, more attention should be given to the development of immunity in the young population.
","PeriodicalId":76007,"journal":{"name":"Journal of hygiene, epidemiology, microbiology, and immunology","volume":"35 3","pages":"225-34"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13117900","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The strains were primarily isolated from humans with diarrheal disease, from domestic and wild animals and from the environment. Most C. jejuni strains were successfully specified and classified using a Czechoslovak serotyping scheme proposed by Kahlich. Serotypes 1, 2, 7, 15, 22 and 24 occurred most frequently in the Czech Republic whereas in the Soviet Union the most common serotypes were 7, 16, 5, 2, 1. The workers were divided into three groups depending on the duration of occupational exposure: 1) 32 workers with a short history of exposure 2-10 years, 2) 37 workers with medium-long exposure - 11-20 years, and 3) 20 workers with a history of long exposure - 21-26 years. The urinary concentrations of mercury in these individuals was 73 +/- 60 microliters x 1(-1), and in blood this concentration was not exceeding 50 microliters x 1(-1). The control group comprised 40 men aged 17 to 52 years. They had not had any occupational exposure to chemicals, or harmful physical factors. On the basis of clinical, haematological and biochemical studies 89 workers with occupational exposure to mercury vapour were regarded as clinically healthy. None of them had any symptoms and signs of the complete neurasthenic syndrome or organic brain injury. Increased nervous excitability was the complaint of 24 workers, 9 had headaches, sleep disturbances were reported by 5, and a feeling of tiredness and apathy was mentioned by 5 men. EEG recording demonstrated 81 normal tracings, and moderately pathological records in 8 men. The parameters of immunity and proteins acute phase reaction were determined, measuring the concentration of immunoglobulins, lysozyme, C3c, C4, alpha 1-acid glycoprotein, haptoglobin and ceruloplasmin in serum. A lower level of IgA, IgG and lysozyme was only noted in individuals with occupational exposure exceeding 20 years.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
","PeriodicalId":76007,"journal":{"name":"Journal of hygiene, epidemiology, microbiology, and immunology","volume":"35 4","pages":"351-60"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"12888849","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The kinetics of phagocytic activity of Kupffer cells and blood monocytes was studied in guinea pigs intra-mesenterically infested with Entamoeba histolytica. The phagocytic capacity of blood monocytes of normal animals was comparatively lower than Kupffer cells for both latex and haemolysin coated sheep red blood cells. Significant decline in phagocytic response of Kupffer cells and blood monocytes of infected animals was observed right from 2nd post infection day and it kept on decreasing with the progress of infection. Depression in phagocytic response of Kupffer cells and blood monocytes was more marked in those animals who had higher grades of pathological lesions. Hence, an inverse correlation was obtained between the phagocytic capacity and severity of amoebic lesions (P less than 0.01). The significance of depression in phagocytic response of Kupffer cells and blood monocytes may be responsible for the development of hepatic lesions.
","PeriodicalId":76007,"journal":{"name":"Journal of hygiene, epidemiology, microbiology, and immunology","volume":"35 4","pages":"419-27"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"12966643","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Blood and protein concentrations were determined semi-quantitatively using Combi-7 reagent strips. The urine samples were then processed and any ova of Schistosoma haematobium present were counted per 10 ml urine. Fresh stool samples were also randomly collected, processed and examined for S. masoni and other helminthic ova. The prevalence of S. haematobium in the area was 43.5% and this was found to be age-related but not sex-related. Mean egg count was 137.2 per 10 ml urine. Intense haematuria of 250 ery/microliters and proteinuria of 500 mg/dl accompanied the high egg counts. The stool examination showed no cases of Manson's schistosomiasis but polyparasitism with other intestinal helminths was common particularly among children under 10 years old. This is the first report of urinary schistosomiasis in this area and the high prevalence rate is consistent with the rice farming occupation of the natives of the area. The sensitive nature and the case of application of the reagent strips in determining heavy infections by measuring haematuria and proteinuria is once again confirmed.
","PeriodicalId":76007,"journal":{"name":"Journal of hygiene, epidemiology, microbiology, and immunology","volume":"35 2","pages":"141-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13099219","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The fractions explored included phospholipids, Cord factor, ethanol-extractable lipids, waxes A, B, C + D and fats. The fractions were divided into three groups according to their effectiveness. 1. The Cord factor and phospholipids from all the studied strains were effective in the antituberculosis and antitumour models with the only exception of strain 725 phospholipids. Phospholipids from all strains were capable of inducing tuberculin allergy. 2. In the second group (waxes A, C + D and lipids extractable by ethanol) a variance was observed in the antigenic properties of identical fractions from different strains suggesting differing metabolism in the strains producing these fractions. A mixture of waxes C + D from the French and Danish strains showed a degree of suppression in its antituberculosis effectiveness. 3. Waxes B and fats were entirely ineffective in the antitumour model and, with the exception of waxes B from strain 725 and fats from the Japanese strain, in the antituberculosis model. The antituberculosis and antitumour effectiveness directly depended on the content of a mycolic acid complex in fractions. Tuberculin allergenicity was associated with the intensity of phospholipid production by mycobacteria.
","PeriodicalId":76007,"journal":{"name":"Journal of hygiene, epidemiology, microbiology, and immunology","volume":"35 1","pages":"73-82"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"12879192","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
