Application of compounds that slowly release hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is emerging as a method to increase plant growth and yield. This study investigated how dibutyl dithiophosphate (DBDTP), which releases H2S when metabolized by a plant, impacts potato growth and development. Two commonly grown potato varieties, Russet Burbank (RB) and Clearwater (CW), were grown under tissue culture, field, and growth chamber conditions with varying amounts of DBDTP. Potato root length was increased in tissue culture when DBDTP was included in the media at 0.025 and 0.1 mM. Potato plant height was also increased, though not significantly, at 0.05 mM DBDTP, while 0.2 mM DBDTP significantly reduced plant height. Under field conditions, potato yield was increased when DBDTP was applied as a 0.5 mM soil drench in 2023. Treated plants yielded 57.9 g per plant, compared to 33.5 g per plant for control plants, with a positive trend detected in 2024. Foliar sprays containing 0.5 mM DBDTP did not cause any visible damage to potato leaves when applied eight days after transplanting in growth chambers. DBDTP was associated with increased auxin pathway gene expression at seven and twelve days after DBDTP treatment. This study demonstrates the versatile ways in which DBDTP may be applied to improve potato growth under tissue culture, growth chamber, and field conditions.
\u0000
","PeriodicalId":7596,"journal":{"name":"American Journal of Potato Research","volume":"103 2","pages":"215 - 232"},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2026-02-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s12230-026-10041-1.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147735066","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A three-year field experiment conducted under Pannonian Basin conditions was performed using two irrigation systems (drip and sprinkler), three potato cultivars, and four nitrogen (N) and potassium (K) fertilization regimes. Results showed that drip irrigation combined with 103 kg N ha⁻¹ and 202 kg K ha⁻¹ increased total yield and chip-grade tuber production. The cultivar ‘Brooke’ consistently outperformed the others, with 34.4 t ha⁻¹ total yield and 30.4 t ha⁻¹ marketable tubers (40–90 mm). Strong relationships were observed between marketable and total yield (r = 0.975), while ANN models demonstrated high predictive accuracy (R² up to 0.935). The interaction of potato variety and Fusarium species was significant, with the most severe dry rot lesions observed for the combinations of Fusarium sambucinum on Umatilla Russet, Russet Burbank, or Atlantic, and Fusarium oxysporum on Dark Red Norland. In contrast, Fusarium redolens and Fusarium culmorum were least aggressive on all varieties. Variation in aggressiveness within species was observed for F. sambucinum. Clearwater Russet was bred for high U.S. No. 1 yield and resistance to cold sweetening, although anecdotal reports indicate postharvest fry color varies across environments and practices. To assess this variability, five commercial fields in Washington’s Columbia Basin, spanning up to 240 km and representing different growers, were sampled in 2023. Evaluations included specific gravity, reducing sugars, and fried sample reflectance across multiple developmental and storage stages. Fry color loss, color uniformity, and temporal responses differed significantly among fields. These results show that, despite its breeding objectives, Clearwater Russet can display variable postharvest and processing performance under commercial conditions. Ethylene has emerged as a potential alternative, since it is naturally occurring in plants and exhibits sprout suppressant activity, though commercial outcomes may vary. To evaluate its effectiveness in seed storage systems for both sprout control and potential impacts on tuber set and size distribution, this single-year study examined ethylene treatments on three cultivars: Caribou Russet, Teton Russet, and Dakota Russet. In this study, ethylene effectively reduced sprouting in stored seed potatoes, hastened emergence, increased stem numbers, and reduced average tuber size, however, also reduced total yield (ca. 13%) compared to the controls. These findings indicate that ethylene can be an effective sprout suppressant for seed potatoes, but its use should be carefully targeted to production systems where smaller tubers are advantageous, as yield reductions may offset economic value.

","PeriodicalId":7596,"journal":{"name":"American Journal of Potato Research","volume":"103 2","pages":"238 - 242"},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2026-01-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s12230-025-10036-4.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147735069","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Seed potato planting stocks start from micropropagated plantlets transplanted to a greenhouse for nuclear tuber production. Tubers are then grown for multiple generations in the field before use in commercial ware potato production. Growers consider factors such as crop genetics and management to ensure productivity and quality. However, the impact of the media in which micropropagated potato plantlets are grown and the host plant’s associated bacterial communities are often overlooked. We hypothesized that tubers from high yielding plants will have higher endophytic bacteria diversity, and these will continue to produce high yield in the subsequent field season. In this study, we conducted two sequential experiments involving potato plantlets of two cultivars (‘Russet Norkotah’ and ‘Silverton Russet’). The first experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, where the plantlets were grown in four different planting substrates: peat-based media (a former standard now discontinued due to potential for pathogen contamination), and three alternate substrates (Perlite, 2:1 perlite and calcined clay, and 2:1 perlite and rice hulls). Dry aboveground biomass, tuber set, and yield at harvest were measured. The tubers harvested from the greenhouse were then used in a subsequent field experiment. In this second experiment, we measured canopy coverage, total tuber yield and tuber set. For both cultivars in both the greenhouse and field experiment, 2:1 perlite and calcined clay had similar high nuclear tuber yield to plants grown in peat-based media. In the field experiment, for both cultivars, larger planted tuber size resulted in increased measurements across all tuber metrics. Therefore the results indicated that 2:1 perlite and calcined clay mixture has the potential as a suitable alternative substrate for micropropagated potato plantlets. Alpha diversity indices revealed no significant differences in tuber bacterial richness and diversity between substrates and experiment repetitions. Beta diversity analyses demonstrated that experiment repetition had the strongest effect on the composition of the bacterial communities on tubers. This research highlights the need for greater understanding of planting substrate impact on potato microbiome, nuclear tuber productivity and product quality, which may lead to improved early generation seed potato production practices.

","PeriodicalId":7596,"journal":{"name":"American Journal of Potato Research","volume":"103 1","pages":"59 - 74"},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2025-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s12230-025-10021-x.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147342676","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
