The primary objective of this study was to describe parents' experiences of their child being restricted for a clinical procedure. Individual interviews were conducted with seven parents. Data was analysed using the Thematic Network Analysis framework. The findings show that many parents were very uncomfortable with the care of their child when they were restricted for a clinical procedure; this was attributed to perceived ambivalence, or an impersonal attitude, from some healthcare professionals towards their child. The findings indicate the need for multi-disciplinary examination of the practice of restriction. Parents identified a need for greater information at the time of procedures, including information on the expected number of attempts at a procedure, and specific guidance on correct positioning techniques to enhance the expedient and safe care of their child.</p>","PeriodicalId":75953,"journal":{"name":"Issues in comprehensive pediatric nursing","volume":"36 1-2","pages":"5-16"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3109/01460862.2013.768312","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"31326984","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Children's and adult services within the hospital were benchmarked against the government audit tool standards. The aim of the study was to identify good and less optimum compliance to best practice policy driven benchmarks of care, using a 1-4 scale. Each clinical area within the hospital was contacted to make arrangements with members of the inter-professional team to complete the baseline benchmarking exercise. The audit was conducted over 3 days and the majority of the evidence sourced comprised of documented evidence and verbal affirmation of the individual perceptions of key informants of how the various clinical areas scored against the best practice benchmarks. Scores of policy compliance in some clinical areas of the hospital ranged from 1 not yet started (non-compliant) through to 4 you're welcome (fully compliant). The results demonstrate that many of the clinical areas within the hospital are making good efforts to ensure full compliance to policy guidelines and mandates. There are some aspects of policy standards that hospital has yet to fully embrace. This initial benchmarking exercise on behalf of 1 English hospital has revealed some areas of outstanding and good practice which have the potential to be shared.</p>","PeriodicalId":75953,"journal":{"name":"Issues in comprehensive pediatric nursing","volume":"36 1-2","pages":"144-67"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3109/01460862.2013.790738","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"31494521","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An intervention group (n = 116) and a control group (n = 114) of boys and girls aged 13.4 ± 0.3 years had an equal physical education obligatory course requirement at school, with the intervention group additionally participating in swimming class once a week for 2 years. Anthropometric variables were recorded in both groups 3 times between autumn 2006 and 2008, and a clinical examination was conducted twice during this same period of time. Students from the intervention group had lower body mass than their peers in the control group at the end of the course (ANOVA, P < 0.05). The differences in body height and body mass index between the groups were insignificant. In swimming students, the correction in scoliosis was more distinct than in the control group (P < 0.05 by chi-squared test). The groups did not differ significantly in occurrence of other postural defects. Regular participation in standard swimming education at school did not have much effect on postural defects in adolescents. A special program of corrective water exercises should be applied to the school physical education syllabus.</p>","PeriodicalId":75953,"journal":{"name":"Issues in comprehensive pediatric nursing","volume":"36 1-2","pages":"37-47"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3109/01460862.2013.777818","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"31367435","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although the laws are an extension of safe school mandates, restoring justice in schools has taken a top priority. The lack of intensity of current anti-bullying programs and educators underestimating the gravity of bullying and its long-term effects on victims is problematic. In addition, little emphasis is being placed on understanding the research base of children who bully others. A review of the criminology and psychiatric research provides insight into the behavior of the bully. Studies demonstrate that bullying in school is a “gateway” behavior toward future criminal behavior; bullying will persist if professionals do not buy into the gravity of chronic child aggressors. Remediation directed at young children is essential, concurrent with the provision of teacher training programs focused on understanding the common behavioral disorders of childhood. A look at the existing research provides direction toward meeting the significant needs of children who bully others and perpetuate violence in schools and into adulthood.","PeriodicalId":75953,"journal":{"name":"Issues in comprehensive pediatric nursing","volume":"35 3-4","pages":"153-62"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3109/01460862.2012.708215","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"31036720","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: Specifically the costs and benefits of the primary caregivers’ experiences were examined through semi-structured one-one-one interviews. The specific focus of this paper was to examine the costs of caring for a child with an ASD, whereby costs did not refer solely to monetary costs, but were related to all aspects of the caregivers’ lives. Interviews were completed with 8 mothers of children that had been formally diagnosed with an ASD. Results: Undoubtedly all family members within the family unit were affected by a child’s diagnosis with ASD as evidenced by the costs revealed by mothers. The subthemes derived from the theme of costs included the following: financial and work costs, costs to the health of family, social costs, and costs to overall family life. The results from this research provide evidence of the challenges associated with caring for a child with an ASD. Conclusions: It is anticipated that the insights provided by these mothers can act as a source of support for others faced with a similar situation. Additionally health care professionals may be able to use the knowledge gained from such qualitative endeavors in order to help parents cope more effectively with their caregiving responsibilities associated with children with ASDs. The mothers within this study are remarkable women that, for the most part, were able to rise above the negatives/costs associated with caring for a child with an ASD and find the silver linings amidst the turmoil. As remarkable as these women are in the daily struggles they face with their children, it is evident that more resources and support are required to assist these women and their families.","PeriodicalId":75953,"journal":{"name":"Issues in comprehensive pediatric nursing","volume":"35 1","pages":"45-69"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3109/01460862.2012.645407","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"30390994","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
