By the second year, the undergraduate student experiences impressions from previous expectations before entering college. They build professional identities from competing discourses of diversity and standardization; use and negotiate these discourses differently and experience the building process differently, depending on your unique social identities; and as a result, they build different types of professional identities. OBJECTIVE: To investigate or track students in professional identity formation from high school to medical school, in a private institution in Salvador / BA. METHODOLOGY: Cross-sectional observational study with a quantitative / qualitative approach. Students in the 5th and 6th semesters of medicine, 2019.1. Questionnaire via email, or in person. Descriptive statistical analysis, IBM SPSS Statistics20.0 program. Numerical variables were analyzed following central and dispersion trends. A qualitative analysis by content analysis. Study was cleared by the local ethics committee under approval number 03547118.6.0000.5544. RESULTS: 197 students answered the questionnaire. Mean age 21.86 +/- 2.3; 111 (56.3%) female; 88 (44.7%) Catholics; 99 (50.3%) of the 5th semester and 98 (49.7%) of the 6th semester. 197 (100%) single and 130 (69%) live with their parents. 184 (93.4%) without previous vocational training. Mean pre-vestibular course time of 1.21 years (SD +/- 1.03). 181 (91.9%) participate in some extracurricular activity. 137 (69.4%) answered vocation as motivation to do medicine. 190 (96.4%) participants answered that there was a change in the way of thinking and acting in front of the patient and humanistic issues. 161 (81.7%) answered that the expectations were met by the course. 120 (60.9%) respondents do not feel unmotivated, guilty or ashamed when they fail during clinical practice. 190 (96.4%) perceive the influence of teachers in their education. 186 (94.4%) perceive humanistic content in the curriculum. 99 (50.3%) strongly agreed that there is competitiveness within the course. 94 (47.7%) strongly agree and 72 (36.5%) agree that they feel “more medical” after the start of clinical / hospital practices. 34 (17.3%) strongly agreed, 35 (17.8%) agreed and 73 (37.1%) agreed in part that they feel using the patient as an object. 89 (45.2%) strongly agree and 80 (40.6%) agree that the choice for a specialty may be influenced by a teacher / physician / mentor. 43 (21.8%) of the participants strongly agreed that there is influence on the way they behave and dress, 69 (35%) agreed with the statement. CONCLUSION: It is possible to infer that students enter the course very young and without any experience in the higher education environment. According to the WHO, about 800,000 cases of suicide were reported around the world in 2014, which translates to an index of 1 suicide every 40 seconds. Medical students constitute a population at risk for the development of suicidal ideation. Several life factors may influence the risk of suicidal ideation, those being personality traits, social factors and mental health. OBJECTIVE: Identify the indicators of suicidal ideation among medical students during their academic training. METHODS: This is a systematic review carried out in the electronic databases Pubmed and BVS. Articles that addressed the subject of suicidal ideation among medical students in Portuguese, English and Spanish from 2008 to 2018 were included. RESULTS: We found 263 articles, of which 12 articles met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. After the application of the STROBE statement, 6 articles were selected for the creation of this systematic review. The prevalence of suicidal ideation varied from 3.7% to 35.6% around the world and several factors were linked to the increase of suicidal ideation risk. CONCLUSION: A suicidal ideation is a frequent and multifactorial phenomenon that involves several realms of a medical student's life. The risk factors identified in this review were linked to the increased risk of suicidal ideation development.","PeriodicalId":75938,"journal":{"name":"International journal of health education","volume":"22 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81464249","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Leadership actions are increasingly required in educational spaces in order to lead them to institutional goals. However, some factors keep educators away from these theoretical concepts such as varied demands, lack of time and financial and professional incentives. Moreover, there may be a decreased of effectiveness in their behaviors and a developmental impairment of the education institution. OBJECTIVE: This study's aim was to investigate which leadership behaviors are most performed by professors. METHODS: It was carried out a cross-sectional study of 20 professors from public and private institutions. A structured questionnaire \"Leadership Skills and Behaviors Inventory\" was applied through Google Forms application, including 27 statements reporting positive leadership behaviors and using Likert Scale from 1 to 5 for each answer. RESULTS: The most agreed and performed behaviors of interviewed professors were “shows enthusiasm and liking to their work” and “values the team's work and its ideas for improvement”. The least accomplished were “feel comfortable in face of unexpected events and difficult situations” and “take responsibility for all participants' work in their educational space”. CONCLUSION: Educators have points to be improved in relation to their leadership behaviors. Furthermore encouraging these professionals training becomes important to improve national education.","PeriodicalId":75938,"journal":{"name":"International journal of health education","volume":"297 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79621734","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The priority health concerns are to be identified jointly by governments, health care organizations, health professionals and the public’’1. More recently the Global Consensus for Social Accountability of Medical Schools (GCSA) defines a socially accountable medical school as one that: ‘‘responds to current and future health needs and challenges in society, reorientates its education, research and service priorities accordingly, strengthens governance and partnerships with other stakeholders and uses evaluation and accreditation to assess their performance and impact’’2. The proposal of a simulated enviroment, with clinical data collection and regular physical examination, is crucial to this process. The Semiological bases of Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública module, used by the OSCE’s 4th semester medical students, capacitate them for such means. SUMMARY OF WORK: The evaluation logistic was divided into two segments: the first one was made through a theorical exam with close questioning, exhibiting images and videos, but also containing an open-ended question requesting a construction of a fictional clinical case; in the second one it was applied a practical exam segmented by different fields of medical knowledge (neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory/abdomen), with the evaluation of 120 students and followed by the teacher’s feedbacks at the conclusion of each field exam. SUMMARY OF RESULTS: The experience was important, however, it is notable the need for a complex management and understanding of the evaluational process. Discussion between students and teachers happened in behalf of the development of such proposal. CONCLUSIONS: The application of theorical exams throughout the semester combined with a practical exam (the OSCE) at the conclusion of the curricular component Bases Semiológicas had significant weight to the whole process.","PeriodicalId":75938,"journal":{"name":"International journal of health education","volume":"61 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74486007","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

OBJECTIVE: Identify the benefits of the HR method compared to traditional education in the pre-clinical years of medical graduation. METHODS: Systematic review through electronic database search in the period defined between 12/31/1999 and 6/25/2017. RESULTS: A total of 262 articles were found, of which 04 fully satisfy the inclusion and exclusion criteria previously established. The academic performance measured through applied tests was superior in the FC method in two studies. One study demonstrated that students performed better on analysis-type questions, according to Bloom's taxonomy. In the FC method the students had contact with more sources of study. In addition, the studies that brought qualitative evaluation of the students about the methodology obtained opinions favorable to its application. CONCLUSION: The FC method was advantageous in motivating students. The results suggest that this method promotes greater content retention. The FC methodology becomes superior to traditional teaching in the analysis-type questions, according to Bloom’s taxonomy, indicating the possibility that this method is better to address higher levels of complexity in the teaching-learning process. Data related to students' academic performance in each method are still inconclusive.","PeriodicalId":75938,"journal":{"name":"International journal of health education","volume":"205 ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72424732","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
