This is an openaccess article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. ABSTRACT Quercetin is a polyphenolic flavonoid, found naturally and widely distributed in many plants. Quercetin has a plethora of activities and due to its diverse activity profile and multifunctionality on various targets, it has become an upcoming area of interest for several researchers. Evidences suggest that researchers have put up a way forward and explored the novel approach of quercetin lipid-based formulations. Recent literature studies indicate that lipid-particulate, emulsion and vesicular systems were found to be successful in comparison to the conventional formulations. These formulations comprise of a suitable combination of natural lipids with surfactants, cosurfactants and cosolvents. Customizing lipid nanoparticles with quercetin to a particular target may also be a revolutionary method in order to optimize the therapeutic activity of drugs and mitigate toxicity. There is an increasing need to develop these novel formulations as they enhance the solubility profile, improves stability and has an expanded biological profile. Regardless of its enormous potential linked with the delivery of several lipophilic drugs with improved bioavailability using novel lipid-based nano-formulations, these lipid formulations have certain drawbacks, which limits its commercialization and market potential. This review updates and increases knowledge about quercetin-lipid based formulations having anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, dermatological and CNS activity as well as those useful in treating several bone disorders. This review also compiles recent advances in methods, formulation composition, targets, experimental models and route of administration for quercetin containing lipid-based formulations.","PeriodicalId":74432,"journal":{"name":"Pharmacognosy reviews","volume":"40 1","pages":"32-46"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85583239","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is an openaccess article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. ABSTRACT Many skin diseases such as sunburn, pigmentation, wrinkles, dermatitis, urticaria, ageing, skin cancers and immune suppression are due to the extreme exposure to harmful sun radiations. The mere covering of skin through sunglasses, clothes or other external agents is not adequate protection method. Therefore, application of sunscreen is considered as one of the trendiest methods to get rid of the skin aging, sunburn and other related problem arises due to the exposure of ultraviolet radiation (UV) radiations. Sunscreen agents protect from the sun by absorbing the UV and visible sun rays. Herbs have been used in medicines and cosmetics from centuries and their potential to treat different skin diseases, to adorn and improve the skin appearance is well-known. The presented review article is concern with discussion on various plant derived chemicals acting as sunscreen agents such as squalene, peptides, and nucleotides etc and protecting mammalian skin. Herbs and herbal preparations have a high potential due to their antioxidant activity. Antioxidants such as vitamins (Vitamin C, Vitamin E), flavonoids, and phenolic acids play the main role in fighting against free radical species that are the main cause of numerous negative skin changes. Effective botanical antioxidant compounds are widely used in traditional medicine and include tocopherols, flavonoids, phenolic acids, nitrogen containing compounds (indoles, alkaloids, amines, and amino acids), and monoterpenes. Anthocyanin’s, Proanthocyanidin, Quercetin, Anthranilate, Resveratrol, Apigenin, Silymarin, Curcumin, Carotenoids are well known plant derived active chemicals that have potential to absorb radiations. This review covers all essential aspects of potential of herbs as radioprotective agents and its prospects.","PeriodicalId":74432,"journal":{"name":"Pharmacognosy reviews","volume":"1 1","pages":"47-56"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90278455","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ABSTRACT Introduction: The literature demonstrates a scarcity of pharmacological and toxicological studies that reveal the usefulness and safety in using products that present as active raw material Bauhinia guianensis Aubl. This study aimed to research the botanical aspects, traditional use, and phytochemical composition of the vegetal species Bauhinia guianensis Aubl., described in international scientific literature. Methods: A search was carried out in different databases, specifically in the Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde-BVS, Embase, Lilacs, PubMed/Medline, CAPES Periodic, ResearchGate, SciELO, ScienceDirect and Scopus, with the descriptor “Bauhinia guianensis Aubl.”, published between 1996 and 2020. Results: The results show few studies on this vegetal species, mainly related to the in vivo study of the antiinflammatory and antinociceptive activities that extracts from both the plant how much of your endophytic fungi can present. Conclusion: It is also important to identify the active constituents since there are rare analyses of the composition and structure of metabolites present in this plant or its endophytic fungi. This plant species is a promising source for obtaining biologically natural compounds that validate the ethanopharmacological use of Bauhinia guianensis Aubl.","PeriodicalId":74432,"journal":{"name":"Pharmacognosy reviews","volume":"156 1","pages":"76-81"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77132156","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ABSTRACT Drug development from natural products precedes human history by thousands of years. Mankind has learned to take the advantages of such discovered principles by nature which they now used to treat human diseases. Since, owing to the close evolutionary history with plants and animals species, many metabolites that they produce, mimics the human biological activities such as the neurotransmitters, enzymes and hormones. Therefore, many metabolites that plants and animals produce are now used by human being to treat the diseases like diabetes, cancer, microbial infections and Alzheimer’s disease. The advent of combinatorial chemistry, organic chemistry and high throughput screening (HTS) has developed many lead molecules to treat human diseases. Unfortunately, these renewed techniques did not bring any expected returns in terms of new drug discoveries and therefore many researchers have shifted their research efforts back to the natural products to discover and develop the multidimensional and multibroadspectrum medicines using genomic engineering, combinatorial mucobiosynthesis and modern analytical techniques. In the present review, we have discussed comprehensively the journey of modern medicines with their prospects and promises.","PeriodicalId":74432,"journal":{"name":"Pharmacognosy reviews","volume":"124 1","pages":"20-31"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87844757","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ABSTRACT Studying the biological activity of fungi is crucial to discovering their potential for the treatment and prevention of various diseases. The diverse composition and various substances they produce are the basis of their application in medicine. Pullulan can be used as blood plasma substituent, carrier in drug delivery systems. Chitin possess antimicrobial, anticoagulant and antitumor activities. Inotodiol and the other substances from Inonotus obliquus possess strong cytotoxic activity against breast and gastric cancer. Camptothecin derivatives are used for treatment of ovarian and colorectal cancers. In our study we used a strain Antarctic yeasts Cryptococcus laurentii AL65. We found out that these psychrophilic yeasts possess antineoplastic activity. Their action is observed in solid tumors-bladder cancer. Along with their cytotoxic effects yeasts possess a very good safety profile and can be part of future antitumor therapy.","PeriodicalId":74432,"journal":{"name":"Pharmacognosy reviews","volume":"27 1","pages":"12-19"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87241949","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
