{"title":"[The alteration of Japanese anatomical terminology in the early Showa period and the Japanese language reform campaign].","authors":"Tadashi Sawai, Tatsuo Sakai","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>In the second decade of the Showa period, great changes were made in the Japanese anatomical terms. It has been proposed that the presentation of JNA (Jenaer nomina anatomica) was one of the factors leading to the change. The Japanese language reform campaign, however, played an important role. The party kokugoaigo doumei and its successor kokugo kyokai required concise and unified technical terms. The anatomical nomenclature committee of the Japanese Association of Anatomists worked to satisfy this requirement. The committee consulted with nomenclature committees of other medical associations and took account of their opinions. The anatomical nomenclature committee abandoned the literal translation from Latin to Japanese and shaped a succinct Japanese terminology. Hiei, sponsored by a newspaper company. {"title":"Historical development of modern anatomy education in Japan.","authors":"Tatsuo Sakai","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>Medical schools at the beginning of Meiji era were diverse, both in regard to their founders and their methods of education, frequently employing foreign teachers of various nationalities. In 1871, German teachers were appointed to organize medical education at the medical school of the University of Tokyo. The anatomical education at the school was conducted by German teachers, i.e. Miller (1871-1873), Dönitz (1873-1877), Gierke (1877-1880) and Disse (1880-1885), followed by Koganei, who returned from the study in Germany. At the first meeting of Japanese Association ofAnatomists in 1893 [Meiji 26], the Japanese anatomy teachers met together and most of them were graduates of the University of Tokyo or fellows of its anatomy department. Before 1877 [Meiji 10], the anatomy books were mainly translated from English books, and foreign teachers of various nationalities were employed in many medical schools in Japan. After 1877 [Meiji 10], the anatomy books based on the lectures by German teachers at the University of Tokyo were published. The anatomy books after 1887 [Meiji 20] were written based on German books, and the German anatomical terms were utilized. After 1905 [Meiji 38], the original Japanese anatomy books appeared, employing international anatomical terms. In the Meiji 10s the anatomy teachers and anatomy textbooks spread from the University of Tokyo to the medical schools in Japan as the number of medical schools increased temporally. In the Meiji 20s the five national and three public medical schools in addition to the University of Tokyo provided substantial anatomy education including dissection course. Even in the early Meiji 20s these medical schools supplied only half of the newly licensed doctors, and the others were supplied through the national examination after preparatory education at private medical schools without opportunity of substantial anatomy education including dissection course.</p>","PeriodicalId":74310,"journal":{"name":"Nihon ishigaku zasshi. Although classical studies at large had stagnated at the time under the rule of the Ottoman Empire, with the movement toward independence in the second half of the 18th century the Greeks raised their consciousness of the fact that they were the successors to their ancestral great achievements. From that time classical studies, including the history of medicine, had been activated. {"title":"[\"Non naturals\" in Islamic medicine].","authors":"Naohide Yaguchi","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>\"Non naturals,\" which appear frequently in the history of Western medicine, means things not controlled by human nature, contrary to natural components of a body. It covers such a wide range of factors as physiological or psychological things, and the external envionment. Generally, these are classified into six categories; ambient air, food and drink, exercise and rest, sleep and wakefulness, excretion and retention, and the passions of soul. In medieval times the knowledge of these \"six non naturals\" constituted a kind of hygiene or regimen. People cannot avoid the effects of these elements in their lifetime, so physicians were required to learn about them not only to treat diseases but to preserve health and to prevent diseases. This became so common that it was included in the curriculum of medical schools. Although these factors were already known to have an effect on the health of humans in the early stage of Greek medicine, it took a long time to be formed into the theory of \"six non naturals.\" Its origin can be traced back to Galen's \"Ars medica,\" but he does not use the name \"non naturals.\" With the later development of medicine in the Islamic world, which received Greek medicine through translation, the number and the contents of related factors differ from author to author. Moreover, they use different names; few authors use the name \"non naturals.\" It seems that \"six non naturals\" had not been established as theory until the later stage of the history of medicine in Islam.</p>","PeriodicalId":74310,"journal":{"name":"Nihon ishigaku zasshi. This paper reports on the hygiene policy plan at that time by using this magazine. That is, the plan considered the facts about the regional society when executing it, though it was based on the hygiene system assumed to be an ideal \"Isei\". In that case, it involved not only the police but also the doctors and pharmacists as practitioners who practiced hygienic clerical work, and it aimed at bringing the functions of the hygienic clerical work to the local populace. However, neither the doctors nor pharmacists came to play a role when cholera was prevalent in 1877. These leaders are Mr. Kawasoye, M., Mr. Mukae K., and Mr. Magara M. The lives of these leaders were different, but they all strongly contributed to the development of modem obstetrics and gynecology in Taiwan. With regard to the passage of time, Mr. Kawasoye contributed the initial efforts, Mr. Mukae worked during the flourishing period of the clinic; and Mr. Magara worked during the mature period, emphasizing research. {"title":"[\"Infectious disease\" theory during the Japanese Shogunate: an analysis of \"Ichikawa Hashimoto-Hakuju-cho Dandoku-ron Ikken\"].","authors":"Toyoko Kozai","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>Dandoku-ron (Treatise on Eliminating Poisons), written at the beginning of the 19th century by Hakuju Hashimoto, a doctor from Kai (Yamanashi Prefecture), is said to be the first book written by a Japanese author who \"treated infectious diseases by means of modern concepts.\" Hashimoto acquired the ideas for his \"infectious disease\" theory through his own observations and experience. These ideas, suggesting that tangible poisons--not epidemics or congenital eczema--caused diseases such as smallpox, measles, syphilis, and scabies, were fresh and original at the time. The originality that Hashimoto demonstrated in Dandokuron sometimes conflicted, however, with the theories of the Ikeda group of the Igakkan (Tokugawa Shogunate medical school). {"title":"[On the sources of the anatomical illustrations appearing in Quanti-xinlun].","authors":"Hideshi Matsumoto, Tatsuo Sakai","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>Quanti-xinlun by Hobson is frequently considered to have introduced European scientific anatomy to modern China. It contains numbers of precise anatomical illustrations which surpass by far those found in the Chinese traditional medical books. The impact of Quanti-xinlun derived mainly from the optical effects based on the anatomical illustrations. The present study clarifies for the first time the sources of the anatomical illustrations as being mostly from Wilson's \"A System of Human Anatomy\" and Carpenter's \"Animal Physiology\". However in Quanti-xinlun, the editorial sophistication present in the source books was abandoned, with the result that the anatomical contents were extremely minimized. In view of modern Chinese medical history, Quanti-xinlun provided an outline of anatomical knowledge, rather than a textbook encompassing anatomical details.
