Addressing this issue requires a systematic understanding of how coaches implement strategies to prevent bullying and create a positive team culture. This study employs Q methodology, integrating both qualitative and quantitative analyses to explore coaches' perspectives on bullying prevention. Data were collected from 30 coaches working with athletes aged 6-14 using snowball sampling. Principal component analysis and Z-score calculations were applied to identify key viewpoints, while qualitative interviews provided additional depth to the findings. The analysis revealed five key themes in bullying prevention strategies: education and awareness, disciplinary measures, team cohesion, leadership development, and active monitoring with positive reinforcement. Coaches emphasize training programs to instill respect, sportsmanship, and sensitivity, while implementing behavioral boundaries to reinforce team norms. Parental involvement and fostering positive peer relationships contribute to team cohesion, whereas empowering athletes as leaders strengthens accountability. Finally, rewarding constructive behavior through active monitoring helps mitigate bullying incidents. This study provides valuable insights into how coaches address peer bullying in youth sports. By identifying and categorizing diverse intervention strategies, it contributes to broader discussions on athlete protection and well-being. Future research should evaluate the long-term effectiveness of these approaches across various age groups, genders, and sports disciplines to establish comprehensive anti-bullying frameworks.</p>","PeriodicalId":73905,"journal":{"name":"Journal of prevention (2022)","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-05-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144096373","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This practitioner narrative explores the implementation of the European Prevention Curriculum (EUPC) in Bosnia and Herzegovina as part of a Special Issue on EUPC implementation practice and lessons learnt, examining the first outcomes of the training on decision, opinion, and policy makers (DOPs) and its role in fostering the adoption of evidence-based prevention strategies. Since 2022, ten EUPC training courses have been conducted in nine cities, engaging 178 key stakeholders from various sectors. The training aims to enhance participants' knowledge of science-based prevention principles and equip them with tools for informed decision-making in policy development and program implementation. To assess the outcome of EUPC training, we analyzed changes in policy discussions, strategic planning, and funding allocation for prevention programs. Key indicators include the proposal for the first national Prevention Strategy and the revision of public funding criteria to prioritize evidence-based initiatives. These findings demonstrate the training's role in shaping a more structured and effective prevention landscape. By systematically strengthening the capacity of key stakeholders, EUPC training serves as a catalyst for embedding science-based prevention within national frameworks. This paper highlights its potential to drive a paradigm shift toward sustainable, evidence-informed public health policies.</p>","PeriodicalId":73905,"journal":{"name":"Journal of prevention (2022)","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144048088","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present randomized controlled trial (RCT) study aimed to examine the effects of the Incredible Years Basic Parent Training (IYPT BASIC) with mothers of children with behavioral and emotional problems. For this purpose, mothers of 77 preschool children with behavioral and emotional problems were randomly assigned to intervention (n = 39) and control (n = 38) groups. The intervention group underwent 15 IYPT BASIC intervention sessions. RCT data were analyzed by repeated measures analysis of variance. A process evaluation was conducted exploring the delivery of the intervention in the Iranian context using adherence data, questionnaires with parents, and staff interviews to evaluate implementation challenges. Interview data were analyzed thematically. The program reduced children's behavioral and emotional problems (η<sup>2</sup><sub>p</sub> = .45, p = .000 & η<sup>2</sup><sub>p</sub> = .50, p = .000) and enhanced children's social skills (η<sup>2</sup><sub>p</sub> = .08, p = .015). The study also demonstrated reductions in parenting stress of mothers (η<sup>2</sup><sub>p</sub> = .59, p = .000), improved parent-child relationships (η<sup>2</sup><sub>p</sub> = .80, p = .000), and enhanced quality of family life (η<sup>2</sup><sub>p</sub> = .48, p = .000). Two main themes emerged in relation to the intervention process: cultural challenges and implementation challenges. Sub-themes included compatibility of IYPT elements with traditional Iranian parenting, cultural gap, motives and expectations of mothers, strict rules and cultural sensitivities, lack of financial support, fidelity to protocol, and preservation and maintenance. IYPT can be used as an effective intervention to promote the mental health of Iranian children and mothers. Lifestyle modification through education and counseling is a key strategy in CVD management. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of a nurse-led intervention on CVDs-related health costs and lifestyle habits among Chinese adults with CVDs. A quasi-experimental study was conducted among adults with CVDs assigned to either an intervention or control group. The intervention consisted of bi-monthly sessions over a six-month period, conducted in a hospital setting by trained registered nurses. Outcomes included CVD-related health costs and lifestyle behaviors (smoking, alcohol use, physical activity, and diet), measured at baseline, post-intervention, and six-month follow-up. Data were analyzed using Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) to compare adjusted outcomes between groups, controlling for baseline values, age, gender, and BMI. The intervention group showed a higher proportion of non-smokers (from 65.2 to 74.1%) and participants with healthy diets (from 14.8 to 27.4%). At post-intervention, they had significantly fewer cigarettes smoked (9.6 ± 0.27, 95% CI: 9.07, 10.13 in intervention group vs. 11.1 ± 0.31, 95% CI: 10.49, 11.71 in control group; p = 0.024, η² = 0.020) and higher physical activity levels (264.4 ± 5.7, 95% CI: 253.23, 275.57 in intervention group vs. 229.2 ± 6.2, 95% CI: 217.05, 241.35 in control group; p = 0.032, η² = 0.018). The Reasoned Action Approach (RAA) provides a framework for understanding psychosocial drivers of help-seeking intentions. This study assessed associations between college students' drinking behaviors, the RAA, and their intentions to seek professional help for alcohol use if they thought or knew they had an AUD. Cross-sectional survey data from 2,110 college students were analyzed to examine alcohol use, psychosocial risk factors, and help-seeking behaviors. Participants met inclusion criteria if they were 18 to 24 years old, enrolled full-time in a college or university, reported past-year alcohol consumption, and passed data quality checks. Measures included demographics, RAA constructs (attitudes toward, norms regarding, perceived control over, and intention to seek professional help), and alcohol use behaviors assessed via the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT). Descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to examine factors associated with help-seeking intentions. The average AUDIT score was 10.91, indicating hazardous alcohol use. Nearly one-third of participants had an AUDIT score ≥ 15, suggesting an increased likelihood of an AUD. Regression results showed that higher AUDIT scores (p < .001) were negatively associated with the intention to seek professional help for alcohol use. All RAA constructs were statistically significant predictors of intention to seek help (p < .001), with the full model explaining nearly 40% of the variance in help-seeking intentions. This study provides new insights into the complex interplay between personal beliefs and drinking behaviors in help-seeking intentions. Leveraging constructs of the RAA, specifically, positive attitudes toward professional help, greater social acceptance of help-seeking, and higher perceived autonomy over seeking help, was associated with stronger intentions to seek support. The psychosocial elements of these frameworks, combined with informing students of their risks, offer a nuanced approach to encouraging the shift from help-seeking hesitancy to help-seeking acceptance.</p>","PeriodicalId":73905,"journal":{"name":"Journal of prevention (2022)","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143999710","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Community-based group exercises are activities that combines both functions. Fewer studies have examined the association between community-based group exercises and the depression severity of middle-aged and older adults. In this study, we were trying to estimate such correlation and explore the potential mechanisms. Data from the China Longitudinal Study of Health and Retirement was analyzed (N = 17,481). Participation in community-based group exercises and depression severity were self-reported by the surveyed middle-aged and older adults. The ordered probit model was used to analyze the association between participation in community-based group exercises and depression severity. Compared with middle-aged and older adults who did not participate in community-based group exercises, those who engaged in such activities exhibited improved depression severity in the current year (coefficient = 0.229, p < 0.01) and two years later (coefficient = 0.199, p < 0.01). The relationship was more pronounced among women. Improved physical fitness and more frequent visits to neighbors and relatives for social support are potential mechanisms. In addition to medical interventions, social support and physical fitness are effective strategies for depression prevention. Policymakers could enhance the mental health of middle-aged and older adults, particularly among women, by encouraging participation in community-based group exercises. Recent meta-analyses of behavioral treatments for those with elevated body mass index (BMI) have demonstrated inconsistent, but generally minimal, effects for dealing with EE. This might largely be due to inappropriate sampling, cross-sectional research designs, and a lack of understanding of theory-driven psychosocial mechanisms of EE change. This study aimed to inform mental health, medical, and health behavior-change professionals on methods to address EE within obesity treatments. Within the present field-based research, women with high EE participated in 6-month community-based obesity treatments emphasizing either weight-management education + attention on EE (n = 34), self-regulatory skills-no attention on EE (n = 43), or self-regulatory skills + attention on EE (n = 42). Each condition incorporated physical activity for its mood-change potentials. Significant improvements in physical activity, mood, eating-related self-regulation and self-efficacy, EE, and weight were found in all groups, with greater advances occurring in the self-regulation vs. educationally focused conditions. Incorporating aggregated data, significant theory- and previous research-derived paths from changes in physical activity → mood → self-regulation → self-efficacy → EE change over 6 months, and over 12 months, were identified. Reductions in EE over 6 and 12 months predicted weight loss over 6, 12, and 24 months. With the global impact of COVID-19, the need for robust disease prevention and control programs within educational settings has become more apparent than ever. This study examined the association between school-based disease prevention and control programs and students' physical health and academic performance in Ghana, a developing country, with a focus on the mediating roles of mental health and health literacy. Conducted with 386 students using a descriptive cross-sectional design and a quantitative research approach, the study employed questionnaires for data collection and structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) for analysis. The findings indicated that school-based disease prevention and control programs are associated with higher health literacy among students and linked to better physical health and academic performance. However, the impact on mental health was not significant. The results indicated that these programs are positively associated with physical health outcomes and academic achievement, with mental health serving as a partial mediator. This research highlights the importance of integrating comprehensive disease prevention and control programs, including mental health workshops, to address gaps in mental health outcomes in schools. It also emphasizes the need for governments and development partners to develop robust health policies focused on school-based health programs. In this article, the focus is on the EUPC for DOPs, as the training of DOPs has emerged as a priority in the process of implementing a quality prevention system in the country. The Implementation of EUPC training for DOPs is carried out in close collaboration between Service on Addiction Policies of the Croatian Institute of Public Health (Further: CIPH) and PrevLab. PrevLab ensures that the training materials are constantly updated based on (inter)national research and provides supervision for the trainers, while CIPH provides the financial and organisational resources for the implementation of the training. To date, 119 DOPs have participated in the training and the evaluation results show that the learning outcomes of the training have been achieved. An evaluation tool still needs to be developed to assess the impact of the EUPC training for DOPs on the national prevention system. In addition, further measures need to be taken to ensure the recognition and participation of high-level DOPs in the EUPC training. A strong factor promoting the (further) implementation of EUPC training for DOPs is the fact that the need for DOP training on evidence-based prevention is recognised in national documents in the field of substance use prevention, as well as the strong support from CIPH, an organisation with high credibility and influence at national level, and the national focal point of the EUDA.</p>","PeriodicalId":73905,"journal":{"name":"Journal of prevention (2022)","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144058273","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
