A statistical analysis technique that is often overlooked is hierarchical design methodology, which allows for the separation of overall variance into several related components. While hierarchical methodology is relevant to many fields, we have demonstrated that it can be taught through the synthesis and characterization of polymeric materials. Basic statistical concepts are described, along with relevant examples.","PeriodicalId":72557,"journal":{"name":"Chemical engineering education","volume":"1 1","pages":"11-22"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83686260","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The student must operate the plant in assigned roles that closely identify with a chemical plant environment, to achieve specific performance targets. Students must overcome technical challenges that require them to translate their theoretical understanding into practical outcomes. This ensures students take ownership of the class and act semi-independently of the demonstrators.","PeriodicalId":72557,"journal":{"name":"Chemical engineering education","volume":"11 1","pages":"24-30"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87314865","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The drive into Penn State is beautiful, passing through the hills of the Allegheny Mountains and through multiple state parks and forests. For many visitors, that trip ends at Beaver Stadium, the second largest stadium in the western hemisphere and home to the Penn State football team.  For others, the draw might well be Penn State’s Breazeale Nuclear Reactor, the longest continuously operating university research reactor in the world.  However, for most of the past 60 years, visitors interested in chemical engineering would arrive at Fenske Laboratory, the long-time home for the department named after Merrell Fenske (who is also the namesake for the “Fenske equation” used to calculate the minimum number of theoretical plates in a distillation column). But, not any more. In Spring 2019, the department moved into a brand new, state-of-the-art, 195,000 square foot facility specifically designed to accommodate our undergraduate and graduate programs. The department graduated 223 B.S. chemical engineers in 2017-2018, ranking first among all degree-granting institutions in the U.S. (www.asee.org/colleges), and 25 of our graduate students received their Ph.D. degrees, the largest number ever produced by the department in a single academic year.","PeriodicalId":72557,"journal":{"name":"Chemical engineering education","volume":"18 1","pages":"3-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74568137","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Auto-graded homework questions with randomized numbers and content can explore proficiency in the course material. The AIChE Education Division immediately responded to this educational shift by developing five Virtual Communities of Practice (VCPs) that allowed faculty to share experiences and best practices as well as provide a network for emotional support. Community creation, methods and materials shared, and surveys related to the impact of this initiative will be discussed.","PeriodicalId":72557,"journal":{"name":"Chemical engineering education","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91110787","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
