Group I consisted of 9 patients with duodenal ulcer having hypersecretion of gastric acid as determined by histamine test; 7 patients with duodenal ulcer who underwent truncal vagotomy and had insulin test performed two weeks after the operation formed group II. The total concentration of free amino acids was similar in basal and in stimulated gastric juice in both groups. Also the concentrations of the individual amino acids did not change significantly after stimulation. There was, however, a significant increase following stimulation in the output of amino acids both in group I and in group II. This increase was parallel to that in the volume of gastric juice, which suggests that a definite amount of free amino acids is always present in the gastric juice, and that the secretion of these acids is not under vagal control.
","PeriodicalId":7158,"journal":{"name":"Acta physiologica Polonica","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13632580","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cadmium was administered as cadmium acetate in a dose of 0.3 mg Cd2+/kg body weight for three months. At the same time the control rats were injected with 0.9% NaCl. The animals were decapitated and samples of their skeletal muscles: the soleus muscle (composed mainly of red slow twitch fibers; ST) the gastrocnemius muscle containing two types of fibers (white fast twitch fibers FTb and red fast twitch fibers, FTa) and the liver were dissected out. In the samples of muscles, liver and serum contents of glycogen, glucose, pyruvate and lactate, as well as activities of hexokinase, pyruvate kinase and lactate dehydrogenase were measured. Intoxication of rats with cadmium for three months resulted in a reduction of glycolytic enzymes in the serum, ST and FTa muscle fibers and in the liver but did not change the activities of glycolytic enzymes in the FTb muscle fibers. The data obtained for the concentrations of glycogen in the liver and skeletal muscles suggest different mechanisms of cadmium influence on glycogen utilization in these organs.
","PeriodicalId":7158,"journal":{"name":"Acta physiologica Polonica","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13632585","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Functional relations between neighboring neurons of nucleus interpositus of the cat cerebellum.","authors":"R Tarnecki, I Zurawska","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

In the nucleus interpositus (IP) of the cat cerebellum the response patterns to peripheral stimulation were recorded, and the interactions between electrophysiologically identified neurons were studied with cross correlation techniques. The response patterns were composed of excitation appearing with latencies of about 8 to 22 ms., separated and succeeded by phases of inhibitions. Four basic types of interneuronal connectivities were observed: 1) intranuclear excitation, 2) shared input from a common source, 3) intranuclear inhibition, and 4) stimulus coordinated firing. Shared input appeared in all combinations of paired neurons and extended for a distance from 300 microns up to 1000 microns. Intranuclear excitation as well as inhibitory synaptic connection occurred mainly in combinations between interneurons and efferent neurons. Stimulus coordinated firing of paired neurons was found in almost the entire extent of the nucleus interpositus.
","PeriodicalId":7158,"journal":{"name":"Acta physiologica Polonica","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13634815","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Concentrations of noradrenaline in the hypothalamus, brain stem and cerebral cortex were decreased during hypoglycemic convulsions and were lower during coma than those during convulsions. Dopamine concentration in the striatum was decreased during convulsions and coma. It was shown that the decrease in concentration of catecholamines was a result of hypoglycemia but not of insulin action itself. Clonidine- alpha 2 agonist accelerated occurrence and prolonged duration of hypoglycemic convulsions. Haloperidol-dopamine receptor blocker had no effect on the time of occurrence or duration of convulsions and coma. The results indicate that noradrenaline may exert an inhibitory influence on hypoglycemic convulsions. No evidence has been provided to support involvement of dopamine in the control of hypoglycemic convulsions and coma.
","PeriodicalId":7158,"journal":{"name":"Acta physiologica Polonica","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13632579","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"The activity of mitochondrial enzymes in the muscles of rats subjected to physical training and subchronical intoxication with lead and zinc.","authors":"P Laszczyca","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of lead and excess zinc on the adaptation of mitochondria from skeletal muscles to physical effort. Rats were intoxicated once a week for 12 weeks by subcutaneous injection of the solution containing 2 mg Zn+2 and/or 3 mg Pb2+ per kg of body weight. During the last 6 weeks, 6 times weekly, rats performed endurance training which involved swimming 15 minutes daily with additional load of 5% of the body weight. The activities of isocitrate (ICD), malate (SDH), succinate (MDH) dehydrogenases, cytochrome oxidase (COX) and protein content (PM) were determined in the mitochondrial fractions obtained from the soleus muscle (ST fibres), and from the superficial (FTb fibres) and deep (FTa fibres) parts of the gastrocnemius muscle. In the control group (C), which was injected with saline, higher activities of ICD and MDH were obtained in FTa and FTb fibres than in the ST fibres. SDH and COX had higher activities in FTa and ST compared to FTb fibres. Zinc treatment (Zn) caused diminution of ICD, SDH and COX activities in ST fibres. Lead intoxication (Pb) resulted in a decrease of MDH activity in all fibre types, and in a decrease of SDH activity in ST fibres. Simultaneous action of zinc and lead produced an increase in ICD activity and diminution of COX activity in FTb fibres. It also resulted in an increase of SDH and decrease of COX activity in ST fibres. These results suggest that the ST fibres are more susceptible to disturbances of adaptation to physical exercise caused by zinc and lead. There are no signs of uniform antagonism between zinc and lead action in the processes under investigation.
","PeriodicalId":7158,"journal":{"name":"Acta physiologica Polonica","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13632586","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Adult female rats were injected with 1 mg 4-APP/100 g body weight/day for 3 days. 4-APP evoked a marked enlargement of the liver with lipid droplets accumulation in hepatocytes. This was accompanied by a marked lowering of the liver glycogen content. Within 3 days 4-APP did not change serum glucose, insulin and free fatty acid concentration. Serum glycogenolytic activity studied in an in vitro system showed 7 times as high glucose releasing ability in 4-APP treated rats as that of the serum of control animals. 4-APP resulted also in a marked enlargement of the adrenal medulla and lowered adrenaline and noradrenaline concentrations in the gland. The possibility of an activation of glycogenolysis in the liver of 4-APP treated rats has been discussed.
","PeriodicalId":7158,"journal":{"name":"Acta physiologica Polonica","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13632584","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
