The new balun structure provides enhanced differential capability leading to high performance in terms of port-to-port isolation and far-field cross polarization. An example antenna using this balun is proposed. The simulated results show 53.5% of fractional bandwidth within the band 1.71-2.96 GHz (VSWR<;1.5) and port-to-port isolation >59 dB. The radiation characteristic shows around 9 dBi of gain and far-field cross polarization <;-48 dBi over the entire bandwidth. The detailed balun functioning and full antenna measurements will be presented during the conference. In particular, we considered signal propagation from a chest worn millimeter wave transmitter and a hypothetical base station in both a laboratory and seminar room. It was found that shadowing of the direct signal path caused by the wearer's body increased the path loss by more than 20 dB at the reference distance (1 m). By employing a focal plane arrays (FPA), the reflector antenna can generate a high EIRP with electronic beam steering. By axially displacing the FPA towards the reflector, the field pattern across the FPA will be broader. Therefore the number of active elements in the array is increased, resulting in a higher EIRP. An in-house developed FPA model based on the physical optics (PO) surface current method is used in this analysis. It is found that 8 dB can be gained if the FPA with 9 × 9 active array elements is axially displaced by 2.3 λ (Frequency 71 GHz) towards the reflector. For this axial displacement the tapering and spillover efficiency are maximally reduced by 3 %. An algorithm based on the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) has been developed in order to process the data. The paper provides measurement results for an illustrative panel, which show clear detection of the distributed defects. The proposed structure consists of two resonators layers separated by an ultra-thin dielectric. One layer is a 2D periodic array of a conventional Jerusalem Cross (JC) shaped unit element. The other layer is based on a hybrid of cross slot dipole bounded by a square loop wire slot. The FSS structure utilizes resonant elements and strong coupling between the layers to achieve a high-Q dual bandpass response, delivering the first operating band at a low frequency. The main advantages of the proposed FSS include miniaturized periodic dimensions of about λ0/15, ultra-thin overall thickness (in the range of λ0/200, where λ0 is the free space wavelength at the lowest band of operation), and highly selective bandpass response. The etching accuracy for thin laminated plates of the diffusion bonding process with conventional chemical etching is limited to ±20μm. This limits the use of this process for antenna fabrication in the submillimeter wave band where the fabrication tolerances are very severe. To improve the etching accuracy of the thin laminated plates, a new fabrication process has been developed. Each silicon wafer is etched by DRIE (deep reactive ion etcher) and is plated by gold on the surface. This new fabrication process provides better fabrication tolerances about ±5μ™ using wafer bond aligner. The thin laminated wafers are then bonded with the diffusion bonding process under high temperature and high pressure. To validate the proposed antenna concepts, four antenna prototypes have been designed and fabricated in the 350 GHz band.
