In this investigation an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model has been developed to predict the ultimate bond strength (Pu) between FRP and concrete based on several factors that influence it. These factors, which were used as input to the ANN, include concrete prism width (bc), concrete compressive strength (fcu), concrete tensile strength (ft) as well as the FRP thickness (tf), width (bf), tensile strength (ff), elastic modulus (Ef) and the bond length (L) between FRP and concrete. The ANN predicted ultimate strength loads were compared with experimental values. It is concluded that the ultimate bond strength predicted by the ANN model are reasonably accurate compared to the experimental values and the accuracy can be further improved by using sufficient data generated by similar standardized tests. Based on the developed model, a parametric study can be carried out to investigate the influence of several parameters on the ultimate bond-strength between FRP and concrete and on the behaviour of bond slip compared to existing models.","PeriodicalId":6383,"journal":{"name":"2011 Fourth International Conference on Modeling, Simulation and Applied Optimization","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89413377","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Conventionally, the system is treated as a black box, in which only inputs and outputs of the black box are considered in measuring the efficiency. The performance of the component processes interacting with each other in the system are not considered. In some situations (in real applications) of DEA applications, there are Decision Making Units (DMUs) which have two-stage structure. In the previous two-stage models have been assumed that all inputs and outputs of DMUs are exactly known and this assumption may not be true (i.e. some or all of inputs and outputs may be imprecise). This paper proposes a method to determine efficiency of two-stage DMUs with interval inputs and outputs. Then illustrates the proposed method using an example.","PeriodicalId":6383,"journal":{"name":"2011 Fourth International Conference on Modeling, Simulation and Applied Optimization","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87100924","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this respect, two main questions have been posed in order to reorganize current chemical engineering study programs: i) which skills and knowledge, common to all chemical engineers, should not be ignored whilst developing new chemical engineer curricula, and ii) which are the other chemical engineering topics, engineering fields, and non-engineering knowledge necessary for engineers to manage those problems of specific current and future (bio)chemical and process related industries. One of the aims of this presentation is to discuss basic learning outcomes, and recommended topics common to all chemical engineers, especially relating to those process systems engineering aspects to be embedded within new study programs requiring the use of computer-aided methods and tools during chemical engineering education. The uses for these methods and tools will be discussed shortly, among them the development of new computer-aided methods and tools, multimedia internet-based teaching and learning programs, and cyberinfrastrucure-based virtual libraries.","PeriodicalId":6383,"journal":{"name":"2011 Fourth International Conference on Modeling, Simulation and Applied Optimization","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74763102","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this issue we propose a QoS management framework for multimedia application mainly for the domain teleteaching which supports the dynamic choice of configuration as per user requirements and changes of underlying network topology. We specially focus on the bandwidth reallocation scheme for every multimedia service for a particular synchronous session. We concentrated on QoS negotiation and adaptation mechanism using Diffserv and the simulation result using Qualnet Network Simulator.","PeriodicalId":6383,"journal":{"name":"2011 Fourth International Conference on Modeling, Simulation and Applied Optimization","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80180107","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Low cost inertial sensors can be used in the positioning system by applying a new sensor selection criterion and an integration algorithm. The integrated navigation system is designed using a positioning error estimator. When low precision inertial sensors are selected, the design is able to quantify GPS errors and inertial sensors' position data using their frequency domain attributes. The estimator design approach is demonstrated using system simulations and experiments.","PeriodicalId":6383,"journal":{"name":"2011 Fourth International Conference on Modeling, Simulation and Applied Optimization","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85962380","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, Malaysian meteorological data has limited parameters and the data recorded is inadequate to be used in AERMOD. Currently, processed meteorological data has to be bought from meteorological data service providers located overseas. The processed data does not represent the real conditions experienced at the site accurately. The study involves the identification of missing data in 4 meteorological stations located in Peninsular Malaysia (Cameron Highlands, Subang, Sepang KLIA, and Kuantan), replacement of the missing data and preparation of the data in accordance with the format that AERMOD requires. The study result in a methodology to replace missing data and calculation using bulk formulae which is developed based on certain assumptions that are practical and scientific.","PeriodicalId":6383,"journal":{"name":"2011 Fourth International Conference on Modeling, Simulation and Applied Optimization","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73541678","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The optimization is based on an equation enabling direct computation of the electromagnetic coupling. The output power is derived using only physical and geometrical parameters. Therefore, optimization can be applied earlier in the design process and the computation time can be reduced down to 50%. One first prototype evidences the effectiveness of this approach.","PeriodicalId":6383,"journal":{"name":"2011 Fourth International Conference on Modeling, Simulation and Applied Optimization","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74507576","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller is popular and relatively simple in structure, its use in balancing the RIP is usually not recommended due to the difficulties in finding the suitable PID controller parameter values for the RIP system, which has two unstable open-loop poles. Therefore, this paper presents an investigation on a PID tuning problem for stabilizing the RIP using a variant of multi-objective Genetic Algorithm (GA), called the Global Criterion Genetic Algorithm (GCGA). Simulation work has shown that GCGA is capable in tuning the PID controller gains to balance the RIP. Compared to the standard single objective GA, the solutions found in GCGA have better control performances. The optimization results have then been applied to the real RIP in order to validate the results in the real-time environment.","PeriodicalId":6383,"journal":{"name":"2011 Fourth International Conference on Modeling, Simulation and Applied Optimization","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76381550","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
