The spring which began as genuine grass-root movement designed to create more equitable social projects, was steered by Western powers and local Islamists in different directions with these powers heavily intervening to control and/or weaken Arab states. China has pursued a policy of non-intervention in the domestic affairs of Arab states, and letting the peoples decide their own future. China may have miscalculated when it allowed NATO to interfere in Libya. That intervention had catastrophic consequences for China and Libya. Consequently, China, in collaboration with Russia decided not to repeat the same experience in Syria especially since foreign intervention in this case will be even more catastrophic. China vetoed Security Council draft resolutions calling for regime change in Syria and insisted on letting the Syrians decide peacefully their future course of action. Further, China under the new leadership has suggested for the first time a four-point program to settle the Arab-Israeli conflict. The article argues that the Chinese-Russian approach to the Syrian crisis is bound to have long-term implications for the future of the Arab world. As the signs of the positive contributions of that approach are emerging, China should proceed to reinforce these contributions through a concerted approach to engage with the new regimes in the Arab world, strengthen the China-Arab States Cooperation Forum, correct the imbalances of Sino-Arab trade, especially with the countries of the Arab Spring, focus on investing in these countries in labor-intensive industries, putting the four-point proposal on the agenda of Arab-Israeli negotiations, and, most importantly, deal with the question of the Israeli nuclear capabilities and the potential of Israel going to war against Iran, a scenario which will represent a major setback to the Chinese achievements in the region.","PeriodicalId":63464,"journal":{"name":"中东与伊斯兰研究(英文版)","volume":"7 1","pages":"36 - 56"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19370679.2013.12023232","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59948884","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective including the maintenance of the international system and national survival of society itself is to safeguard national independence and sovereignty. The nature and practice of international hierarchy helps explain patterns of the international order after the Cold War and understand its transition, especially the role of China’s rise in international politics. The Asia-Pacific region has showed a stable political order generally, but events in the region still may lead to uncertainties of military conflict, such as the North Korean nuclear issue, the Taiwan issue, terrorist attacks in the Middle East and Central Asia and so on. China’s rise will inevitably have an impact on US hegemony in the Asia-Pacific region. But China and the United States can work together to build an effective mechanism to address the challenges from regional security issues, to set up the sustainability of Asia-Pacific and the Middle East security decisions. Efforts have been made by scholars through the proposal of different ideas and approaches towards achieving an ideal Islamic curriculum. This paper aims to share the experience of Brunei Darussalam in implementing a design model of an Islamic curriculum. The idea of designing an Islamic curriculum model was formally discussed among educationists in 1998, although the issue of dualism of education in Brunei was raised much earlier, in the 1970s. Towards achieving this, on January 3, 2004, the Ministry of Education in Brunei Darussalam implemented the ‘Integrated Education System’ in all primary schools in Brunei Darussalam. This system was implemented for only two years (2004,2005). A fieldwork research study using a survey questionnaire was conducted in 2008 among 114 general primary school teachers to explore the issues and challenges encountered in implementing the system. The findings have demonstrated that although the issue of dualism in education is currently a significant topic of discussion within Muslim societies, teachers and educationist lag far behind in realizing this issue, ostensibly because they have not been exposed to the matter. There are also other issues and challenges in implementing this system, which will be discussed later in this paper.","PeriodicalId":63464,"journal":{"name":"中东与伊斯兰研究(英文版)","volume":"7 1","pages":"120 - 97"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19370679.2013.12023234","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59949018","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article probes the theories of modern Islamism thorough analyzing the thoughts of Islamism theorists, such as Muhammad Rashid Rida, Maududi, Hassan al-Banna, Sayyid Qutb, Khomeini, and Husan al-Turabi. After tracking the 2012 oil and gas developments in the Arab countries and outlining the comprehensive production capacity and world rankings of the top ten Arabian Oil, the article analyzes and explores the development prospects for Arab oil and gas industry. The author considers that since traditional oil would be dominant in the world’s energy supply over the next few decades, the Arab oil-producing countries would keep their important roles and prominence in the world oil market. With the gradually improving economic situation in the Arab countries, the oil and gas industry of the Arab countries is poised for another surge of development, and the Chinese oil and gassector may actively seize the opportunity to participate.","PeriodicalId":63464,"journal":{"name":"中东与伊斯兰研究(英文版)","volume":"7 1","pages":"65 - 92"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19370679.2013.12023228","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59948786","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To offer a new direction and advance this discourse some steps further, this paper seeks to address this issue in the thought and writings, by way of a comparative study, of two prominent intellectuals of Iran: Abdulkarim Soroush (b. 1945), who sees no contradiction between Islam and the freedoms inherent in democracy, and Hasan Yousuf Eshkevari (b. 1949/50), who is at the forefront of articulating the relationship between Islam and democracy. The essay argues that (i) the efforts of Soroush and Eshkevari, along with those of many other religious reformist intellectuals and political activists, have collectively given rise to a vibrant, intellectually sophisticated, and expansive discourse of Islamic reformism; (ii) although, theoretically, there is no doubt in the argument that Islam and democracy are indeed compatible (on many grounds), there is lack and scarcity of literature on the practical framework/implementation of this envisioned formula of “Islamic democracy”—a challenge still faced by Muslim political theorists especially in the 21st century.","PeriodicalId":63464,"journal":{"name":"中东与伊斯兰研究(英文版)","volume":"7 1","pages":"43 - 64"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19370679.2013.12023227","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59948610","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Under the presidency of Mubarak, the relationship between the two countries evolved and broadened. Egypt as one of the important Arab countries of the Middle East and Islamic world plays a crucial role in international scene and relationship among nations because it has an intellectual and cultural impact on the other Muslim countries in the region. Egypt also controls the Suez Canal, main waterway providing trade between East and West. The current domestic conditions in Egypt and the overthrow of Mubarak suggest a new chapter in its political life that would change, Egypt’s political milieu and its foreign political stance. Giving an overview of the relationship between Egypt and Israel from its very beginning to the present in four historical episodes, this article tries to analyze the impact of Egypt’s domestic changes on the Egypt-Israel relationship in the post-Mubarak period and it focuses on the point that after its transition and its return to normalcy, Egypt would continue its relations with Israel, albeit with minor differences compared to the past.
