The Supervised Practice Experience Partnership (SPEP) is a provincial strategy that provides IENs the opportunity to attain their supervised practice experience in Ontario. In order to sustain the nursing workforce, there is a need to go beyond recruitment strategies and implement evidence-informed approaches that retain IENs after meeting their registration requirements. Mixed-methods surveys and focus groups were used to evaluate the experiences of IENs, their preceptors and nurse leaders working with the SPEP. The findings highlight the value of mentorship and support from nurse leaders in developing communication skills, building connections with teams, fostering cultural integration and establishing support networks for IENs. This paper enhances nurse leaders' understanding of the experiences of IENs and establishes a foundation for innovative ideas that facilitates their integration and retention.","PeriodicalId":56179,"journal":{"name":"Nursing leadership (Toronto, Ont.)","volume":"35 4","pages":"30-41"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"9510515","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nursing professional practice plays a crucial leadership role in supporting nursing staff and leaders in developing policies, parameters and philosophical approaches for delivering safe patient care. The professional practice leadership at Humber River Hospital, a large Canadian community hospital, implemented three key interventions in this hospital-based case study: (1) proactive workforce planning, (2) increased nursing student placements and (3) novel \"stretch model of care\" in the intensive care unit (ICU). The overall results following the implementation of these interventions resulted in substantial improvements. For example, proactive nursing workforce planning supported both a 98% reduction in agency utilization and an accelerated ICU certification program with an 84% certificate completion rate. Through innovative strategies, there was a significant increase (33-67%) in the number of nursing student placements during the first two years of the pandemic compared with previous years. Within the ICU setting, we maintained optimum ICU capacity that resulted in stronger partnership-driven relationships between nurses and physicians through an interprofessional \"stretch model of care.\" Finally, we avoided emergency department closures and Code Orange calls during peaks of the pandemic.</p>","PeriodicalId":56179,"journal":{"name":"Nursing leadership (Toronto, Ont.)","volume":"35 3","pages":"48-65"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"9242996","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Decades of evidence and experience suggest that a multi-pronged approach that fosters an enabling and supportive work environment for nurses across all stages of their working lifespan will be required to build a more sustainable nursing workforce. This paper demonstrates Nova Scotia's innovation in creating a comprehensive, evidence-informed approach to nursing workforce planning and management, including key strategic areas of action related to (1) facilitating entry into the workforce, (2) investing in the active workforce and (3) enhancing support for and managing attrition of the workforce. This paper also offers nursing leaders a series of reflections on current learnings in the implementation of this innovative and person-centred approach to nursing workforce sustainability. Recognizing the pressing need for action, Nova Scotia Health and provincial leaders have and are implementing strategic innovations to enhance the nursing workforce. These include: (1) investment in organizational capacity for evidence-based innovation, (2) development of collaborative relationships between both internal stakeholders and community partners and (3) creation of mechanisms for meaningful engagement and co-design of locally relevant innovative solutions.</p>","PeriodicalId":56179,"journal":{"name":"Nursing leadership (Toronto, Ont.)","volume":"35 3","pages":"8-26"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"10651555","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this discussion paper, we revisit a report from the Canadian Nurses Association, <i>Toward 2020: Visions for Nursing</i> (Villeneuve and MacDonald 2006), from a graduate student perspective. In this 2006 report, the authors presented a series of predictions for the preferred future of nursing in Canada in 2020. Even without the pandemic, the pre-existing trends in healthcare and nursing did not favour success for the visions presented in this national nursing report. Now, two years after 2020, we examine the extent to which these predictions held true in the following areas: health systems, nursing practice, nursing workforce, nursing education and nursing regulation. We conclude that most of the preferred scenarios were unmet or partially met, and argue that it is critical to enact relevant preferred scenarios now. While the deleterious effects of the pandemic will be felt by the nursing profession for years, these experiences did not hinder our collective ability to lead change in Canada. We offer insights to provide recommendations for nursing actions toward a healthier future for Canadians.
