Identification of cultural factors relevant to smoking among Latinos can inform the development of efficacious interventions for Latino smokers. Acculturation is associated with smoking, especially among Latinas, but extant research is limited by operationalization of acculturation with unidirectional, single-domain proxies. We examined associations of multiple domains of acculturation with gender and smoking status among Latino adults. Cross-sectional data from 140 bilingual Latino adults was utilized. Acculturation was measured with the 4 subscales of the Multidimensional Acculturation Scale II (MAS-II). Logistic regression analyses tested interaction effects between MAS-II American and Latino Cultural Identification subscales, English and Spanish Proficiency subscales, and their interactions with gender, on smoking status. Higher English Proficiency was associated with greater odds of being a smoker at Spanish Proficiency scores of 4.5 or higher. Higher Latino Cultural Identification was associated with lower odds of being a smoker among women, but not men. Acculturation toward American culture, per se, may not be a risk factor for smoking; rather, its influence depends on Latino culture maintenance. Unlike in other areas of mental/behavioral health among Latinos, biculturalism may not be protective against smoking. The association between acculturation and smoking among Latinas may be a function of loss of Latino culture identification. Intervention programs should consider targeting these at-risk individuals. The overarching hypothesis was that discrepancy between family values and the actual experience of those values leads to depressive symptoms. Previous research has primarily focused on attitudinal familism and not whether those values are actually experienced by the individual. Therefore, the purpose of this study was twofold. First, we developed a new Attitudinal and Behavioral Familism Questionnaire (ABFQ), and second, we tested the familism discrepancy hypothesis. A total of 169 Latino adults (63.3% female; mean age = 20.99 years) completed a pool of attitudinal and behavioral familism items, along with measures of perceived family support, family cohesion, family conflict, acculturation, enculturation, social desirability, and depression. Test–retest reliability of the ABFQ was established with a subsample of 48 participants who completed the measures twice, 2 weeks apart. Confirmatory factor analyses were used to identify the items that constitute the ABFQ and demonstrated that the Attitudinal and Behavioral Scales were separate factors. The ABFQ demonstrated good psychometric properties in terms of adequate internal consistency, test–retest reliability, and convergent and divergent validity. Polynomial regression and response surface analyses demonstrated that discrepancy between attitudinal and behavioral familism scores predicted symptoms of depression. Specifically, depressive symptoms appeared to increase as the discrepancy between attitudinal and behavioral familism increased in either direction. This study contributes to the understanding of the link between familism and depression among Latinos. Future directions for research and clinical practice are described. Este estudio examinó la discrepancia entre familismo actitudinal y conductual y su relación con síntomas depresivos. La hipótesis principal fue que la discrepancia entre valores y la experiencia actual de familismo conducen a síntomas depresivos. Estudios anteriores se han enfocado principalmente en familismo actitudinal, y no en si esos valores son realmente experimentados por el individuo. Por lo tanto, el propósito de este estudio fue doble. Primero, desarrollamos un nuevo Cuestionario de Familismo Actitudinal y Conductual (CFAC), y segundo, examinamos la hipótesis de discrepancia en familismo. Participaron 169 Latinos (63.3% mujeres; promedio de edad = 20.99) quienes completaron un banco de preguntas de familismo actitudinal y conductual, junto con medidas de apoyo familiar percibido, cohesión familiar, conflicto familiar, aculturación, enculturación, deseabilidad social y depresión. La fiabilidad test-retest se estableció con una submuestra de 48 participantes que completaron las medidas dos veces, con dos semanas de diferencia. Se usaron Analices de Confirmación Factorial para identificar las preguntas que constituyen el CFAC y demostraron que las ","PeriodicalId":56151,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Latinx Psychology","volume":"7 1","pages":"154–170"},"PeriodicalIF":2.6,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43575998","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Results from exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses supported a 1-factor, 6-item solution, which we call the AAQW-6. Additionally, psychological inflexibility for weight-related difficulties was associated with higher levels of disordered eating and general psychological inflexibility and lower levels of mindfulness. The AAQW-6 added to prediction of disordered eating above and beyond body mass index (BMI) and general psychological inflexibility. This study provides initial psychometric support for using the AAQW-6 with Hispanic college students. Future studies should replicate the factor structure and related psychometrics of the AAQW-6 and further determine whether it allows clinicians and researchers to predict and influence relevant behaviors in the lives of individuals across demographics, Hispanic and otherwise. El propósito de éste estudio fue el examinar las propiedades psicométricas del “Cuestionario de Aceptación y Acción para dificultades relacionadas al peso” (Acceptance and Action Questionnaire for Weight-Related Difficulties, AAQW) en estudiantes universitarios hispanos (N = 313). Los resultados de análisis factorial exploratorios y confirmatorios apoyaron una solución de un factor, seis elementos, la cual fué llamada AAQW-6. Además, la inflexibilidad psicológica de dificultades relacionadas al peso se asoció con niveles más altos de alimentación desordenada y flexibilidad psicológica general y niveles más bajos de atención plena. El AAQW-6 añadió a la predicción de la alimentación desordenada por encima del Índice de Masa Corporal (IMC) y flexibilidad psicológica general. Although most gang-involved teenage fathers wish that their children would not join gangs, their parenting tends to foster gang involvement in their children. An improved understanding of fatherhood among gang-involved U.S. Latino youth can inform the development of parenting- and fatherhood-focused interventions. To foster such understanding, we conducted interviews and focus groups with purposive samples of young gang-involved Latino fathers, parents of gang-involved Latino youth, and individuals who provide services or supports to gang-involved youth. Guided by Marshall and Rossman’s (1995) broad qualitative approach, we analyzed transcripts of these interviews and discussions, extracting 24 themes, which we organized into 7 categories and three higher order content groupings. We discuss the manner in which these findings describe the experience of fatherhood among gang-involved Latino youth, and point to influences on their parenting- and fatherhood-related attitudes and behavior. We discuss, also, the implications of our findings for the development of parenting- and fatherhood-focused interventions for gang-involved teenage Latino fathers. La mayoría de los crímenes cometidos por adolescentes en los EE. UU. están vinculados al pandillerismo, el cual desproporcionalmente aflige a las comunidades Latinas. Aun cuando la mayoría de los padres adolescentes involucrados en el pandillerismo desean que sus hijas/os no se afilien a las pandillas, su crianza de las/os hijas/os tiende a fomentar el involucramiento de estos en pandillas. Una mejor comprensión de la paternidad entre los jóvenes latinos estadounidenses involucrados en pandillas puede informar el desarrollo de intervenciones centradas en la crianza de los hijos y la paternidad. Nuestro análisis de datos cualitativos proporcionados por muestras intencionales de padres latinos jóvenes involucrados en pandillas, los padres y madres de estos, y de personas que brindan servicios y apoyo a jóvenes involucrados en pandillas resultó en tres agrupaciones de contenido que organizan siete categorías y los 24 temas que las conforman. To better assess the environmental context in community-based research, we developed the Negative Immigrant Community Experiences (NICE) scale, a community environment perception measure based on prior work on academic environments (Gloria & Kurpius, 1996) and acculturative stress (Mena, Padilla, & Maldonado, 1987; Rodriguez, Myers, Mira, Flores, & Garcia-Hernandez, 2002; Saldaña, 1994). With a total of 460 immigrants living in 3 rural communities in the Midwest, the results of an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) suggested a 12-item, 3-factor solution: (a) Perceived Experience with Discrimination, (b) Perceived Language Ability Pressures, and (c) Perceived Negative Community Climate. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed and validated the EFA results with the split sample. The NICE scale showed adequate internal consistency along with evidence to support construct validity. Directions for future use of the scale in Latina/o and immigration psychology research and practice are provided. La composición cultural en los E.E.U.U. ha tenido un gran cambio en los últimos diez años, especialmente en el centro del país, con emigrantes Latinas/os trasladándose por mejores oportunidades laborales en comunidades Euro-Americanas que históricamente han sido habitadas en el medio-oeste del país. Para evaluar mejor el contexto ambiental en investigaciones comunitarias, desarrollamos una escala que mide la percepción negativa del ambiente de la comunidad, que se basa en investigaciones realizadas sobre el ambiente académico (Gloria & Kurpius, 1996) y el estrés de la aculturación (Mena et al., 1987; Rodriguez et al., 2002; Saldaña, 1994). Esta encuesta es basada por medio de trabajo sobre ambientes educacionales (Gloria & Kurpius, 1996) y estrés aculturativo (Mena et al., 1987; Rodriguez et al., 2002; Saldaña, 1994). Con los datos de una encuesta realizada con 460 inmigrantes que viven en tres comunidades de la región central del país, un análisis factorial exploratorio (EFA) sugirió 16-items, con una solución de tres factores: (a) Percepciones sobre experiencias de discriminación, (b) percepciones de sentirse presionado sobre la habilidad con el lenguaje, y (c) percepción de un ambiente negativo en le comunidad. Se realizó un análisis factorial confirmatorio (CFA) del clima negativo de la comunidad y se validó con otra muestra los resultados del EFA. La escala de NICE demostró una consistencia interna adecuada junto con evidencia que apoya la validez del constructo. Incluimos indicaciones para el uso de la escala en investigaciones sobre Latina/os y la psicología de inmigrantes, y la práctica.","PeriodicalId":56151,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Latinx Psychology","volume":"7 1","pages":"91–104"},"PeriodicalIF":2.6,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46469919","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such an approach may be an effective method to address the treatment gap in the United States between mental health services received by Latina mothers and mothers who are non-Latina and White. This study explores perspectives of Latina women (n = 16) and local health care providers (n = 14) on a peer-delivered therapy model. A community-based research approach and qualitative methods were used, including focus groups and semistructured interviews. Themes were identified using a grounded theory and framework analysis approach. The findings indicate important barriers to care, including the fact that, among Latinas, depression is often viewed as a sign of weakness, isolation, or shame. Participants also indicated that mental health resources were insufficient, and other barriers to accessing services included language and lack of transportation. All participants reported a positive view of the concept of a peer-delivered model, yet concerns were also expressed regarding ensuring adequate supervision and confidentiality, as well as how to recruit and retain women in the program. Additional cultural considerations also were identified, including trust concerns, how to respond to histories of trauma, and the importance of biculturalism and a sense of community. These findings highlight the importance of a collaborative approach to build on key lessons and codevelop a peer model with Latina women to ensure effective cultural adaptation and sustainability.
