Our study adopted a dualmethod approach consisting initially of sample interviewing with 10 Mexican immigrant fathers, about their partner's depression and recovery, co-parenting, and fathers' coping. Fathers, their partners, and children participated in a family intervention to support the mother's recovery and address the needs of the family. Approximately 12 months from sample interviews and 8 months after the intervention, we conducted in-depth case studies with three of those fathers to explore how their recognition, support, and coping evolved. Results from interviews across time points present fathers' initial and evolving understanding of maternal depression, while a case study example reflects how fathers' recognition of their partners' depression changed, as did their marital and family interactions, as they shifted attribution of their partners' depression from a controllable state to one of illness. Receipt of accurate information about depression increased fathers' recognition of depression and allowed them to expand traditional gender norms to take an active role in supporting their partners and children. Fathers' experiences were not without emotional cost, with many men recounting anxiety, shame, loneliness, and helplessness. This study underscores the importance of including fathers in interventions and research on maternal depression in immigrant families, and it offers recommendations for culturally grounded familyfocused, interventions.</p>","PeriodicalId":56151,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Latinx Psychology","volume":"7 4","pages":"304-321"},"PeriodicalIF":2.6,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6889951/pdf/nihms-1022993.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"9627083","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Research is needed to address rising national rates of substances use to inform the development of policies and intervention programs targeting Latinx youth. Our primary aim was to identify demographic factors associated with substance initiation and use among elementary age Latinx youth. Data for the present study include 52,171 elementary students in 5th and 6th grades, who participated in the National Survey of Drug Use Among Students (ENCODE) in Mexico. Youths reported demographic information, rates of substance use for alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, inhalant, and other substances, or intention to initiate in first time substance use. Findings suggest that Latinx youth who were boys, of indigenous heritage, non-religious, and overage for their grade were especially at risk for reporting lifetime alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, inhalant, and other substance use. Boys and youth with indigenous heritage were more likely to report intentions to try alcohol, tobacco, and other substances for the first time. High subjective economic status was associated with lower risk for reporting lifetime tobacco use and substance use intentions in general. Efforts are needed to disseminate accessible substance use prevention programs during early adolescence to encourage positive developmental trajectories among Latinx youths at an elevated risk for substance initiation and use. Clinical and research implications are discussed.","PeriodicalId":56151,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Latinx Psychology","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.6,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48210476","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Respondent Driven Sampling (RDS) fué utilizado para recopilar y analizar datos de entrevistas clínicas con 248 inmigrantes Mexicanos indocumentados que residen cerca de la frontera entre California y México. Todos los participantes reportaron un historial de pérdidas relacionadas con la migración con un promedio de 13 diferentes tipos de pérdidas (SD 4.59, rango 2 a 25). Se observaron diferencias significativas en el tipo de pérdidas relacionadas con la migración en cuanto a características sociodemográficas y de inmigración. Después de controlar las covariables relevantes, la pérdida de interdependencia, específicamente el ser tratado/a de manera diferente por no tener una visa, fue el predictor más fuerte de estrés (OR 4,97, 95% CI [2.18, 11.34], p .001). Dada la actual situación anti-inmigrante en los E.U. que margina aún más a los inmigrantes indocumentados, es necesario aumentar esfuerzos de abogacía y desarrollar nuevas alternativas que faciliten el acceso a servicios de salud mental destinados a disminuir el estrés asociado con la discriminación entre estos inmigrantes en riesgo.","PeriodicalId":56151,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Latinx Psychology","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.6,"publicationDate":"2019-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43926674","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Para obtener una comprensión más matizada de las relaciones sociales importantes entre los adultos de origen mexicano, examinamos los aspectos positivos (apoyo social) y negativos (socavación social) de estas relaciones, y cómo funcionan directamente y en interacción entre sí y con el estrés de la vida para contribuir al bienestar psicológico. Analizamos cuatro modelos de relaciones sociales (efectos directos, amortiguación del estrés, exacerbación del estrés, y efectos conjuntos) en una muestra de 248 (124 mujeres, 124 hombres) adultos de origen mexicano utilizando un diseño de corte transversal. Los análisis de regresión múltiple mostraron evidencia para el modelo de efectos directos, la amortiguación del estrés, y efectos conjuntos, y sin evidencia para el modelo de exacerbación del estrés. El apoyo social, pero no el socavamiento social, se asoció directa y positivamente con el bienestar psicológico (efectos principales). El alto apoyo social (vs. bajo apoyo social) amortiguado contra el estrés de la vida (estrés amortiguamiento), pero en vista del alto socavamiento social (vs. bajo socavamiento social) se asoció con un peor bienestar psicológico (efectos conjuntos). Alto apoyo social amortiguó contra el estrés de la vida, pero amplificó los efectos dañinos del alto estrés interpersonal. Los resultados de este estudio se discuten en el contexto de la importancia cultural de establecer y mantener relaciones sólidas y armoniosas entre los adultos de origen mexicano. Los hallazgos resaltan la prominencia del apoyo social, especialmente de la familia, en relaciones importantes para adultos de origen mexicano, y el papel dañino simultáneo que el socavamiento social de estas mismas relaciones desempeña en su bienestar psicológico. Se ofrecen implicaciones para los programas de prevención e intervención con adultos de origen mexicano.","PeriodicalId":56151,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Latinx Psychology","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.6,"publicationDate":"2019-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46935552","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
