It is mainly caused by an energy consumption greater than the animal’s requirement; and needs to be detected and faced accordingly because it negatively affects their well-being and longevity. Some important observations are; although it has been reported that depends on the composition of the diet, that dogs fed 2 times a day have lower blood glucose levels, as well as insulin levels showing the same tendency as glucose. Ghrelin and GLP1 concentrations are no different feeding 1 or 2 times a day. Energy expenditure through physical activity is important as it increases the rate of energy utilization and helps to raise the metabolic rate, which contributes to a comprehensive weight reduction program. Metabolic Energy Rate (MER) in sterilized dogs is lower than for intact animals; therefore, sterilization of pets increases the risk of obesity.  The level of protein in the diet is important for promoting body protein synthesis and tissue repair. High protein diets work best when feed is offered ad libitum. Omega fatty acids reduce plasma concentrations of C-reactive protein and insulin. Dietary fiber helps to significantly reduce blood cholesterol and triglycerides.","PeriodicalId":56044,"journal":{"name":"Veterinaria Mexico","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68126431","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

En la toxicidad aguda, las ratas fueron inoculadas con las dosis de 2000, 1000, 500, 100 o 10mg/kg vía intramuscular. Los resultados del análisis histopatológico no mostraron cambios aparentes con las dosis utilizadas. Aunque 2 animales murieron con las dosis de 2000mg/kg, y en el grupo de 1000mg/kg, también murió un animal. En el estudio de toxicidad subaguda, las ratas inoculadas con las dosis repetidas de 8, 24 y 40mg/kg, no presentaron cambios significativos en el porcentaje de peso corporal tanto en hembras como en machos (P=0.5930). En las hembras, se observaron diferencias estadísticas en los parámetros bioquí- micos séricos de glucosa y colesterol en el grupo inoculado con 8 mg/kg en comparación con el control. Mientras que el hematocrito de los grupos de 8, 24 y 40 mg/kg y el recuento de plaquetas en el de 24 mg/kg, tuvo diferencias significativas ( P=0.0110) en comparación con el grupo control en las hembras. En los machos, las diferencias estadísticas ocurrieron en el recuento de eritrocitos y en el Volumen Corpuscular Medio (VCM) en los grupos tratados con 8 y 40 mg/kg. Sin embargo, estos valores son normales según la literatura. Los hallazgos histopatológicos no mostraron cambios aparentes, por lo que se concluye que el compuesto alfa inyectable tiene un amplio margen de seguridad.","PeriodicalId":56044,"journal":{"name":"Veterinaria Mexico","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46240046","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this study was to know the association between single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers and heat stress resistance through a genome-wide association study (GWAS). Where 95 Brown Swiss dairy cows have measured body temperatures, respiratory frequencies, and genotypes. Seven SNP were detected with a statistically significant effect (P < 0.01) on respiratory frequency under heat stress. The markers with the highest association are in the Bos taurus autosome 6 (BTA 6), e.g. the BovineHD0600010397 SNP located within the FAM13A gene, and the BovineHD0600012612 SNP located within the PI4K2B gene. The ARS-BFGL-NGS-102407 SNP that is located in BTA 4 is the SNP that presents the highest number of associations to genes. Most of the genes are involved in cellular processes that are present in the resistance of individuals to high and humid environmental temperatures. These results provide new insights into the genetics of heat stress tolerance in Brown Swiss cattle in Yucatan, Mexico.","PeriodicalId":56044,"journal":{"name":"Veterinaria Mexico","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45947197","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it is also a palatable and low-cost feedstuff for cattle. In this study, we hypothesized that feeding exclusively a corn stover-based diet (CSD), compared with one based on corn silage-oat hay, increases the abundance of the bacterial families and genera involved in cellulose and hemicellulose metabolism. For that purpose, we collected filtered ruminal fluid from six dry Holstein cows during two periods: Period 1, cows consumed a control diet based on corn silage and oat hay (CD), and in the Period 2, cows were fed CSD for 45 days. Ruminal fluid was collected through esophageal tubing. Ruminal microorganisms were identified by sequencing the 16S rRNA gene using the Illumina MiSeq platform. Compared with CD, feeding CSD for 45 days increased bacterial families and genera associated with higher neutral detergent fiber content and esterase and hemicellulolytic activities, such as Rikenellaceae, Prevotella, and Pseudobutyrivibrio. These results indicate that the liquid fraction of ruminal digesta contains a large number of microorganisms that help degrade lignocellulosic complexes, especially when diets with low-quality forages such as CSD are fed.","PeriodicalId":56044,"journal":{"name":"Veterinaria Mexico","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47810751","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This retrospective descriptive study comprised 8 619 patient records from 2009 to 2019. During the period analyzed, 129 species were identified, 60 of these being native Mexican wildlife. Most of the patients received were mammals (56.36 %) followed by reptiles (38.73 %), and 4.91 % remaining were composed by birds, amphibian, fish and invertebrate species. Eight species contributed to the highest percentage of the records (79.88 %), being the red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta elegans) the most common (18.71 %). The number of annual records varied through the period with a trend for increased demand recently. It was possible to identify changes in the frequency of visits of different species over the study period, which allowed us to determine that the preference for the maintenance of some species in captivity has decreased. Commonly received species identification allows veterinary medicine students to specialize and develop the required species-specific medical competencies.","PeriodicalId":56044,"journal":{"name":"Veterinaria Mexico","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-03-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49472736","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Feed intake was higher in hens fed the 20 and 30 % TD diets (120.6 and 119.0 g/day) compared with those fed the 0 or 10 % TD diets (P < 0.0010). Feed egg weight conversion increased with dietary TD inclusion (P < 0.0010). The laying rate was higher (P < 0.0020) in hens on 0 and 10 % TD diets (94.5 and 94.6 %, respectively) than those on 20 and 30 % TD diets (89.7 and 84.9 %). Eggs and yolks were heavier in hens fed 0, 10, and 20 % TD compared with those fed the 30 % TD diet (P <0.0020 and P < 0.0040, respectively), which also had poorer albumen width (P < 0.0010). The yolk had a more intense yellow as the level of dietary TD increased (P < 0.0001). Dietary TD did not affect economic efficiency. It represents a large market for the Pharmaceutical Industry, and various combinations with frail pharmacological support have been made available to veterinarians. The crystalline sodium and potassium salts of BP-G and the benzathine salt of BP-G have been incorporated into many existing preparations, arguing that higher and more prolonged concentrations are obtained. However, there are not evidence published. Notwithstanding the above, these preparations are presented as sustained-release ones and capable of achieving therapeutic concentrations. There are no pharmacokinetic bases for such combinations of BP-G derivatives. It is unlikely that such combinations provide better serum profiles than those offered by an adequate dose of only procaine BP-G. The incorporation of the BP-G benzathine is prohibited in many countries. In Latin America, such combinations limit the amount of procaine BP-G that should be injected, ideally ≥ 20 000 IU/kg of body weight every 12-24 h. Within the framework of the rational use of antimicrobial drugs in veterinary medicine advanced by the World Health Organization (WHO) and based on pharmacological considerations, it is proposed that combinations of BP-G derivatives be restricted, allowing only BP-G procaine preparations. Also, formulations of BP-G incorporating other active principles should offer solid pharmacological support. To date, combined preparations of BP-G have shown no formal pharmacological support. Based on the information presented in this review, it is feasible to conclude that the only BP-G derivative that should be available for veterinary medicine is procaine BP-G.","PeriodicalId":56044,"journal":{"name":"Veterinaria Mexico","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-03-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47077954","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A total of 105 studies were identified in electronic databases: 57 analyzed jaguar food resource use, and 48 described jaguar interactions with humans. The studies were published in 51 journals, mainly in English, from 1993–2021 in 14/19 countries where jaguars live. The evidence demonstrated the variability and prey consumption of the jaguar; there are contrasting results regarding the diversity of prey consumed. The frequency of livestock predation was found to be related to the abundance and availability of natural prey and the distance of ranches from the jaguar habitat. The interaction of the jaguar with humans presented an interesting and contrasting picture, since the perception of the jaguar varied depending on the sociocultural context and the study site. The results showed a negative effect of human activities on the distribution and density of the feline, and there was evidence of poaching and attacks on humans, although the information was insufficient to determine the causes in depth. More research and dissemination are needed on these issues at the local level in the regions where the jaguar lives, as these are the areas where decisions and actions are needed to conserve the jaguar in coexistence with communities and livestock.","PeriodicalId":56044,"journal":{"name":"Veterinaria Mexico","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42190583","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
