Interactions between the endocrine system, the immune system and energy expenditure are critical in the maintenance of homeostasis during stressful periods in vertebrates. We examined whether lungworm loads (Rhabdias spp.) of male cane toad (Rhinella marina) sampled during the wet season from three different populations, are associated with hormone levels, immune competence, and metabolic status. We found evidence of direct and strong associations between parasite burdens and variables related to hormonal levels, metabolic status and immune competence. We also found that interrelationships among independent variables can change the strength of the association with lungworm loads. These findings suggest that high levels of corticosterone affect immune competence against parasites, both directly and by inducing changes in the metabolic status of the animals. Additionally, high testosterone levels during the reproductive season, influenced variables related to metabolic status, which will also lead to higher parasite loads. Overall, we conclude that the endocrine system and metabolic status in male cane toads are critical to the immune competence against parasites during the reproductive season.","PeriodicalId":56044,"journal":{"name":"Veterinaria Mexico","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47322938","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One hundred and twenty chicks one day old chicks were divided into 3 equal groups. 1st group was served as control, 2nd group was given T-Nil Plus®. The 3rd group was given Synertox®. Chicken’s performance was estimated. Serum samples obtained from each group for biochemical analysis. Tissues samples were collected for histopathological examination. The obtained results revealed that, T-Nil plus® induced a marked reduction in body weight gain and an elevation in Feed consumption, moreover, a marked elevation in, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), creatinine and malondialdehyde (MDA) and a marked reduction in aspartate aminotransferase (AST) was detected. While Synertox® caused a significant decrease in body weight, body weight gain and no change in feed conversion rate (FCR) and a marked elevation in ALT, creatinine and a marked reduction in AST and nitric oxide (NO) and it caused a significant reduction in serum glucose level of the birds. In conclusion, Synertox® induced a powerful effect comparing to T-Nil Plus®, as it induces a good FCR and increases the response of the birds against oxidative stress.","PeriodicalId":56044,"journal":{"name":"Veterinaria Mexico","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49532925","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ninety pregnant CD-1 mice were divided into 6 groups: control, Cp 20 mg/kg, Sp 400 mg/kg and three with Sp at 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg with Cp. Sp was administered intragastrically from day of gestation (DG) 6 to 16 and Cp, intraperitoneally to DG 10. Females did not differ in weight, except for DG 10. In gravid parameters, Cp and Sp alone or in association did not show significant effects, except for umbilical cord length, placental diameter, weight and size of fetuses. At DG 17 the females were sacrificed to obtain pregnancy parameters. In the fetuses, macroscopic malformations such as anasarca, exencephaly, hydrocephalus, open eye, cleft palate, absence and deformations of upper and lower extremities and tail were evaluated, in skeletal anomalies absences, deformations, supernumerary bones and a delay in mineralization were observed, antioxidant enzymes were determined in the livers, as well as markers of damage due to oxidative stress. Sp 400 along with Cp counteracted the malformations significantly. Sp protects against Cp teratogenicity in mice by decreasing reactive oxygen species and increasing concentrations of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, although not catalase.","PeriodicalId":56044,"journal":{"name":"Veterinaria Mexico","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47052396","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aims of this study were: to perform a systematic review to determine epidemiologic characteristics of published observational studies on leptospirosis, and to obtain pooled measures of the global prevalence of the disease with a meta-analysis for studies using indirect diagnostic tests (M1) and direct diagnostic tests (M2). A bibliographic search to find observational epidemiological studies reporting the prevalence of leptospirosis in cats was performed. The geographic location and decade of publication of the studies, serovars, serogroups and factors associated with Leptospira infection were summarized through a systematic review. Meta-analyses were achieved to obtain the pooled global prevalence (M1 and M2), prevalences according to the continent and origin of the sampled cats. 139 articles were found, and 93 were selected. In 16 articles, Leptospira serogroups were recorded and seropositivity was more frequent for Icterohaemorragiae, Australis, Autumnalis, Pomona. In 59 articles, the serovars were reported, being the most common reactions for Pomona, Grippotyphosa and Canicola. The M1 included 83 articles; the pooled prevalence was 11.09 % (95 % CI = 8.68–13.73). The M2 comprised 23 studies and the pooled prevalence was 9.22 % (95 % CI = 4.30–15.41). A subgroup analysis revealed higher pooled prevalences in Oceania and Europe, shelter, rural and outdoor cats in studies using indirect diagnostic tests and in Asia, stray cats and veterinary hospital patients in studies with direct tests.","PeriodicalId":56044,"journal":{"name":"Veterinaria Mexico","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49076622","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, we performed a scoping review to systematically map, describe, and classify primary research that assessed the effect of heat stress on the reproductive, physiological, and productive parameters of livestock. Electronic databases were searched to retrieve full-text, peer-reviewed experimental or cohort studies published from 1980 to August 2018. We included in vivo and in vitro studies exposing animals or cells to heat stress conditions and used a control group. Studies were evaluated based on title and abstract and then selected for final inclusion based on full text. We performed data charting to describe and visualize the evidence. In total, we included 466 studies, among which bovines and porcines were the most frequent species studied. Reproductive and physiological parameters were the main groups of outcomes assessed, and studies using adult females predominated. Seventy percent of the studies were experimental, and almost half of the studies used natural environmental conditions to assess the effect of heat stress in animals. Most of the studies were performed in the Americas and Asia, and three journals provided one-third of the publications. The systematic evidence synthesis presented herein outlines the trends of research performed to assess the effect of heat stress on livestock and allowed us to define future secondary studies to extend our knowledge about the negative impact of heat stress on the productivity of farm animals.","PeriodicalId":56044,"journal":{"name":"Veterinaria Mexico","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-12-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43217535","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Diets high in low digestible protein tend to favor microorganisms that when fermenting amino acids generate substances that induce inflammation, while high digestible protein and fermentable fibers have been related to beneficial bacteria. The study's objective was to identify changes in the relative abundance of specific microorganisms (Clostridium perfringens, Enterococcus faecium, Lactobacillus salivarius, Bacteroides fragilis and Fusobacterium varium) by PCR (polymerase chain reaction), associated with two diets of different quality and digestibility. Twenty adult dogs were used, divided into two groups, the first one fed with a high digestibility diet (HD) (n = 10), the second one with a low digestibility diet (LD) (n = 10). After 3 days of adaptation to the diet, fecal samples were taken at days 15 and 30. The results showed that the high-quality diet promotes a transient increase (15 days) in the relative abundance of F. varium and E. faecium, as well as a persistent increase in that of L. salivarius and B. fragilis until day 30. Apparently, however, healthy adult dogs eventually balance their fecal microbiota, regardless of the dietary protein level and digestibility. Therefore, it is difficult to identify clear patterns of the ideal dietary profile in this species.","PeriodicalId":56044,"journal":{"name":"Veterinaria Mexico","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43449744","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hasta la fecha, se carece de información al respecto, lo cual es importante para facilitar la selección y recomendación de estos productos por profesionistas de la veterinaria. Se estudiaron productos de 20 marcas comerciales, a los cuales se les realizaron pruebas fisicoquímicas, sensoriales y de desempeño, además de evaluar el contenido de sus etiquetas. El pH del champú varió entre 5.6 y 8.4; la viscosidad, entre 1 131 y 3 102 m P a - s; la densidad relativa, entre 1.002 y 1.099 g/mL y el índice de espuma entre 2.9 y 4.0 min. El 95 % de los champús formaron espuma cerrada, mientras que entre el 10 y el 35 % de las marcas presentaron deficiencias en el etiquetado. En general, las propiedades físico-químicas y sensoriales de las marcas de champú bajo estudio se encuentran dentro de los límites aceptables para la línea de uso en humanos. No obstante, la falta de consistencia en el etiquetado sugiere que es necesario mejorar la supervisión de la normatividad aplicable para proteger la salud animal y pública.","PeriodicalId":56044,"journal":{"name":"Veterinaria Mexico","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-11-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47580182","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study evaluated a new distemper treatment for dogs. Two healthy male dogs of mixed breed were prepared. A 1 000-dose vial of Newcastle disease vaccine was then diluted with 6 mL normal saline and 3 mL of it was injected into the cephalic vein of each dog, collecting 20 % of the blood volume 11 h later. Blood sera were separated and used as anti-Newcastle disease vaccine serum (ANDVS) to treat dogs suspected of having canine distemper. Dogs with confirmed distemper were grouped into the following seven treatment groups: 1- ANDVS; 2- ANDVS + Cotrimoxazole; 3- ANDVS + Penicillin-Gentamicin; 4- ANDVS + Cefazolin-Amikacin; 5- Cotrimoxazole; 6- Penicillin-Gentamycin; 7- Cefazolin-Amikacin. Then the fatality rate of dogs, association between distemper and sex, breed, age, and effects of distemper on hematological factors and vital signs were evaluated. The recovery rates in the ANDVS+ Cotrimoxazole and the ANDVS+ Cefazolin-Amikacin groups were higher than those in the ANDVS group (P < 0.05). Fatality rate was significantly different in distemper-positive and distemper-negative dogs. It is concluded that although ANDVS alone has no effect on the treatment of distemper, it can increase the recovery rate when combined with cotrimoxazole or cefazolin + amikacin as compared with the sole use of these antibiotics.","PeriodicalId":56044,"journal":{"name":"Veterinaria Mexico","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41619952","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The treatments were applied by stump-dipping daily for three days, with either iodine-polyvinylpyrrolidone (I-PVP) (η = 205), or with an alginate gel containing 0.5% enrofloxacin hydrochloride dehydrate (enro-C) (enro-C/alginate gel) (η = 209). Results showed that only one death occurred in the enro-C/alginate gel group, and it was attributable to internal hemorrhage not linked with the treatment. On day 4 6 other cases were recorded as stump fibrosis, but regarded as inconsequential. In the I-PVP group, 44 calves developed cord infection and were considered treatment failures (13 high-risk; 11 medium-risk, and 20 low-risk) (P < 0.05 in the three risk grades). The umbilical stump involution was evident in the enro-C-alginate on day one as most stumps were noticeably dried. Stump detachment occurred on day 29.74 ± 0.79 SD and the umbilical scars did not present infection in any case. In contrast, in the remaining calves of the group treated with I-PVP, stump drying was observable after 72 h, and they detached at a mean of 32.9 ± 3.1 SD days (P < 0.05). In stumps treatment with enro-C-alginate, dirt stuck less, and the gel formed an apparently protecting layer around the umbilical scar when stump was wither absent or too short. These results show that calcium alginates as prepared with enro-C is a successful preventive treatment that allowed rapid umbilical stump involution in newborn calves.","PeriodicalId":56044,"journal":{"name":"Veterinaria Mexico","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45946249","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
