Its feeding behavior impacts animal and human health due to the risk of rabies virus transmission. The objective of this study was to explore the wild and domestic prey of <i>D. rotundus</i> through a systematic review and a bibliometric analysis. Scientific and photographic evidence related to the diet of <i>D. rotundus</i> in the Americas was searched and selected from reference databases. Geographic location and biome data were recorded where predation events were documented. The review suggests that <i>D. rotundus</i> can inhabit a wide variety of ecosystems, ranging from deserts to tropical forests, and even elevations above 3100 meters. More than 40 wild and domestic species were identified in its diet, ranging from birds such as Humboldt penguins to large predators such as pumas, suggesting that <i>D. rotundus</i> is capable of, such as Humboldt penguins, to large predators, including adapting its diet according to prey availability and environmental conditions. The bibliometric analysis highlighted the generalist ecology of <i>D. rotundus</i> in terms of feeding behavior, habitat use, and distribution range. This study provides a baseline for identifying general patterns in the diet of <i>D. rotundus</i> and quantitatively complements the existing literature on the common vampire bat's feeding ecology.</p>","PeriodicalId":56044,"journal":{"name":"Veterinaria Mexico","volume":"12 ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2025-01-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC13105257/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147789627","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of this study was to use digital image analysis (DIA) to predict biometric measurements of Pelibuey sheep as a non-invasive approach under on-farm conditions. Withers height (WH), body length (BL), body diagonal length (BDL) and rib depth (RD) were predicted in Pelibuey ewes using DIA. Images were taken from the left flank from 65 non-pregnant and non-lactating Pelibuey ewes using a digital camera and analyzed by DIA. The BM determined from both in vivo and by DIA presented a positive and moderate (P <0.05) correlation coefficients (r) of 0.43, 0.66, 0.73 and 0.75 for BL, BDL, WH and RD, respectively. Regression equations from BM by DIA had a determination coefficient (R2) of 0.19, 0.44, 0.54 and 0.56 for BL, BDL, WH and RD, respectively. The equations developed were from low to moderate precision (R2 = 0.18 to 55), moderate to high accuracy (Cb > 0.69) and low to moderate reproducibility index (> 0.30). Overall, the use of DIA was able to predict the BM in Pelibuey ewes with low to moderate precision and accuracy. Factors affecting the accuracy and precision of this relationship should be further investigated.","PeriodicalId":56044,"journal":{"name":"Veterinaria Mexico","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-09-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45282763","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Se caracteriza por cambios morfológicos en la célula. Las especies del complejo Mycobacterium tuberculosis inducen este fenómeno; en el modelo bovino, se demostró que tanto Mycobacterium bovis como sus extractos proteicos, inducen apoptosis independientemente de la activación de las caspasas, sin embargo, la identidad de las proteínas en los extractos proteicos se desconoce. En este estudio reportamos que, a través de cromatografía de exclusión por peso molecular, se obtuvieron fracciones proteicas con la capacidad de inducir fragmentación del DNA en macrófagos de bovinos independientemente de la activación de la caspasa 3. Se detectó SE en 48/115 muestras, con tasas variables de contaminación (10-80 %) por zona geográfica (c2 = 24.2, P = 0.0021). Se obtuvieron 116 aislamientos y se observó circulación de serotipos implicados en salmonelosis humana en México (Agona, Anatum, Infantis, Newport, Derby, Give y Typhimurium). La resistencia fue más frecuente en tetraciclina (39.7 %), cloranfenicol (37.9 %), estreptomicina (37.1 %), trimetoprima-sulfametoxazol (31.0 %) y ampicilina (28.4 %), moderada en azitromicina (14.7 %), escasa en cefalosporinas (2.6-3.4 %) y nula en carbapenémicos, mientras que 38.8 % de los aislamientos fue multi-drogo resistente (MDR). Los genomas secuenciados portaban alelos de resistencia contra aminoglucósidos (aadA, aac, aph), beta-lactámicos (bla-CARB, bla-PSE, bla-TEM, bla-CTX-M, bla-CMY), fenicoles (floR), inhibidores de la vía del folato (sul, dfrA), fluoroquinolonas (qnrAB, oqxAB), tetraciclinas (tetABM) y macrólidos: mph(A) y lnu(F). Se concluye que la carne bajo estudio es reservorio de SE con preocupantes fenotipos de MDR y que el patógeno ha adquirido genes de RAM contra antibióticos usados en medicina humana y veterinaria. El auge de resistencia contra azitromicina es particularmente alarmante y no se había reportado hasta el momento. Se requieren estudios más amplios para una mejor caracterización de la RAM en las poblaciones de SE asociadas con bovinos.","PeriodicalId":56044,"journal":{"name":"Veterinaria Mexico","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43116708","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This phenomenon caused the population of vultures to decline sharply, on the brink of extinction, in India, Pakistan, Tibet, and many countries in the Middle East. For this reason, except for Spain, this medication has been prohibited for veterinary use in the rest of Europe, the United States of America, Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and many other countries. In contrast, in Latin America, diclofenac is available for veterinary use in various preparations alone or combined with antibacterial drugs. The precise impact this is generating on the native species of vultures and other birds that feed on animals that die in open pastures and are not incinerated is unknown. Given the nature of our livestock production via small producers and extensive farming, most animals medicated with this NSAID can enter the natural food chain and become part of the vulture diet. Most researchers who have studied this ecological problem have recommended that countries adhere to the precautionary principle of prohibiting its sale until there is concrete evidence of the magnitude of the damage that the permissive use of diclofenac in veterinary medicine may cause in Latin America. In Mexico, the official standard NOM-064-ZOO-2000, Lineamientos para la clasificación y prescripción de los productos farmacéuticos veterinarios por el nivel de riesgo de sus ingredientes activos, recommends incinerating animals treated with diclofenac, a command that does not fit our daily reality. The question is: shall Latin American countries remain inactive despite a hitherto invisible ecological disaster? Research in Latin America needs to be carried out that supports or rejects the possible impact of diclofenac on wild species, including vultures. However, many countries on the continent, including Mexico, have adhered to the 11th Declaration of Rio for Sustainable Development in the 21st century. Based on this, we propose that action should be taken without delay to avoid or limit an ecological disaster by banning diclofenac in veterinary medicine.","PeriodicalId":56044,"journal":{"name":"Veterinaria Mexico","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44907503","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The ejaculates were collected from 8 rams (4 Blackbelly and 4 Pelibuey), which were mixed (pooled) by breed, diluted and cryopreserved in three different extenders: Animal protein [Tris egg yolk (Triladyl®)], and animal protein-free extenders AndroMed® (lecithin soy bean) and OPTIXcell® (liposome). Sperm analyses of total (TM) and progressive (PM) motility, viability, mitochondrial activity, acrosome integrity, and plasma membrane integrity (PMI) were carried out at 0 and 6 h after semen thawing. OPTIXcell® and Triladyl® extenders showed similar results between them and differed with AndroMed® in TM, PM, viability, and PMI (P<0.0017). In the Blackbelly breed, the TM was higher (P<0.0159) in OPTIXcell® than in AndroMed®. In the Pelibuey breed, the OPTIXcell® and Triladyl® showed similar results between them and differed with AndroMed® in TM, PM, viability, mitochondrial activity, and PMI (P<0.0140). However, Triladyl® showed a higher percentage of sperm with intact acrosome than AndroMed® (P<0.0392). In both breeds, spermatic parameters decreased progressively over the incubation time similarly in all three extenders. In conclusion, OPTIXcell® and Triladyl® proved to be the best extenders to cryopreserve Blackbelly and Pelibuey ram semen. However, OPTIXcell® is an animal protein-free extender that decreases the risk of bacterial contamination, whereas Triladyl® is composed of animal protein (egg yolk), which may impact the fertilizing capacity of sperm.","PeriodicalId":56044,"journal":{"name":"Veterinaria Mexico","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46181991","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is the main cause of benign tumors; however, if not detected in time, it is a risk factor for the development of squamous cell carcinoma, documented with high mortality. To clarify demographic generalities, location of lesions, and findings involved in CPV detection, a systematic review of case reports of CPV was performed. The PRISMA statement was followed. Literature was searched in PubMed, DOAJ, and CAB Abstracts from 2011 to date. The articles collected were tabulated in Excel with the variables of interest. A total of 54 articles were obtained from the search, and 11 were included in the review after the screening and selection process. The analysis of the information allowed us to identify that among the case reports there were 4 investigations with male dogs, 2 females and 5 unspecified. Age ranged from 2 to 12 years. The breed with more cases reported was the Labrador retriever and 6 reported cases with neutered patients. Regarding the location of the lesions, the most common was the oral cavity, and the main findings were the need to identify new subtypes of CPV, and the development of lesions at lower CD4 and CD8 lymphocyte counts. Further research, encouragement of veterinary medical personnel, and dissemination of CPVrelated literature are needed to make this pathology visible and initiate future public health actions.","PeriodicalId":56044,"journal":{"name":"Veterinaria Mexico","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45224934","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main method of control is vaccination, which has shown variable effectiveness partly attributed to genetic variability in sows. The objective was to validate single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with  performance traits following PRRS vaccination in replacement sows. A population of 100 Landrace(¾) / Yorkshire(¼) commercial line sows of 6 months of age, an average weight of 108 kg, and negative for PRRS virus were used. After an acclimatization stage, sows were vaccinated against PRRS (day 0). Daily weight gain (DWG) and rectal temperature (RT) were recorded on days 0, 7, 14, 21, and 28. A blood sample was individually collected on day 40 and used for DNA extraction and genotyping of 59 SNPs. These SNPs were previously identified through genomic analysis as associated with a vaccination response indicator. The 59 SNPs were validated in this study using a statistical mixed-effects model that included DWG or RT as response variables. From 59 SNPs, 5 of them were associated with DWG (P < 0.05), and 3 with RT (P < 0.05). Interestingly, the SNPs in the genes DENND5A (rs81409931 and rs81216494) and COL22A1 (rs329119519 and rs81381462) were associated with both DWG and RT, and they showed a higher allele contribution effect on phenotypes. These 2 genes appeared to be functionally related to DWG; therefore, their corresponding 4 SNPs are proposed as genetic markers associated with the response to PRRS vaccination in replacement sows from southern Sonora.","PeriodicalId":56044,"journal":{"name":"Veterinaria Mexico","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43869884","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Intensive research has revealed its role in several functions related to energy metabolism as well as its importance in both health and illness. An imbalance in gut microbiota composition results in dysbiosis, which has been associated with metabolic disorders such as obesity. In the latter context, the gut microbiota appears to mediate the impact of diet on the host body weight. There are many studies in rodents that show profound changes in the composition and metabolic function of the gut microbiota in subjects with obesity, indicating its influence on the development of the problem. Usually, the microbiota of obese dogs has a modified Firmicutes:Bacteroidetes ratio, which returns to normal values after dietary intervention with diet-induced weight loss. The role of the gut microbiota on the development of dog obesity is a recent topic of research, which has been complex due to most of the studies being carried out using commercial extruded diets, which differ in their nutritional composition, resulting in controversial findings. Nevertheless, it has been shown that macro-nutrients from the diet are the most relevant factors that can modulate the microbiota’s composition in a particular way. Moreover, current studies indicate that a personalized nutritional intervention could modify the composition and function of gut microbiota in a positive manner, reducing the development of pathologies such as obesity.","PeriodicalId":56044,"journal":{"name":"Veterinaria Mexico","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47992525","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
