As a result of Indonesia’s decolonisation 300.000 Dutch nationals came from the former Dutch East Indies to the Netherlands. Among them was a large group of Eurasians, people of mixed Dutch and Indonesian descent. Many of whom had never set foot on the so-called motherland. Although Eurasians had belonged to the European community in the tropics, they were perceived as immigrants by the Dutch government and were subjected to an aggressive, far-reaching assimilation policy - fearing they would otherwise become a major social problem. Their offspring, the so-called second generation, is often assumed to struggle with their identity while growing up in a postcolonial society that did not tolerate cultural differences at the time. What constitutes a Eurasian identity, and can such identities exist after the enforced assimilation of Eurasians in the Netherlands? How do second-generation authors look upon their Eurasian background and how do they portray these assumed identity struggles in postcolonial literature? The texts in question are discussed in relation to theories of hybridity. {"title":"Michał Czerenkiewicz","authors":"Rafał Szmytka","doi":"10.1515/werk-2016-0014","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1515/werk-2016-0014","url":null,"abstract":"Relationships between the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Netherlands have absorbed Polish researchers for almost a century (Kot 1926) both in terms of politics (Czapliński 1952, 1966), economy (Mączak 1972), and art (Ojrzyński 1978; Hrankowska 1995). 1 In the last few decades a literary movement dominated by Andrzej Borowski – a real Spiritus Litterarum Neerlandicorum Polonorum (Kiedroń 2015: 9-23) – and his followers, has come to the forefront. In his book Iter Polono-Belgo-Ollandicum published in 2008 Borowski presents cultural relations between humanists and writers from Poland and Seventeen Provinces, with distinction between the Southern Netherlands and the Northern Netherlands. It is a comprehensive work based on a long-term research that extends beyond one discipline. Thus, it might seem that every consecutive attempt to face the issues discussed in Iter Polono-Belgo-Ollandicum will turn out to be secondary. Michał Czerenkiewicz’s Belgijska Sarmacja, staropolska Belgia takes up this challenge. While Andrzej Borowski included in his work the broadest possible range of relationships between Poland and the Netherlands, Michał Czerenkiewicz focused his attention on literary relations between Poland and the territories which were under Habsburg rule after 1585, namely today’s Belgium. The Author narrowed down the chronological frame of his research to the years 1609-1649, which are determined by death dates of Justus Lipsius and Nicolaus de Vernulz, while making remarks about earlier and later periods. The decision, by all means, seems to be well-aimed. It was a time when the division into Catholic South and independent, protestant North, in which opposing cultural models were developing, became established. The politics of religious intolerance and financial oppression practiced by the Habsburg governors resulted in protests and, finally, in the open revolt of the Provinces under the leadership of the princes of Orange and Nassau. The aim of this work is to follow and reconstruct the ideas of political thought accompanying the events leading to the rise of a new state. In the dicussed state forming process the main emphasis was put on the issues of freedom, states, and sovereignty, as well as on the concept of the possibility of dismissing the obedience inherited from the medieval privileges. The drawing, until now known only through the black and white photograph, could be thoroughly analysed for the first time. During the 17th and 18th century, its ambiguous status was explored by the authors of verse urban encomia and prose descriptiones urbium. In this article, the presentation of The Hague will be first discussed on the example of Caspar Barlaeus’ Latin poem “Haga”, and Constantijn Huygens’ Dutch encomium “’s Gravenhage” from the Dorpen [Villages] cycle of epigrams. Then, the image of The Hague will be examined in the context of an allegorical representation by Jan Caspar Philips in Jacob de Riemer’s Beschryving van ‘s Graven-hage [Description of The Hague, 1730]. Due to the political and social factors (i.e. huge wave of refugees during the Dutch Revolt), tile production was moved to the Northern Netherlands, where it was fully developed and the offer of the Republic’s tile works began to enjoy greatest fame and a huge commercial success all over Europe. The given article deals mostly with Dutch tiles representing the biblical scenes (bijbeltegels) and discusses their numerous contexts, such as confessional and social background, iconographical origin of their designs (engravings, illustrated Bibles, stencils), the taste and status of the potential buyers. Moreover, the artistic and cultural phenomenon of Dutch biblical tiles has been interpreted in terms of a much wider tradition, namely the ‘biblicisation’ of everyday life in the Dutch Republic and its interiors. The main point of interest is Ascanio Amalteo’s transformation or even breakaway from the classical tradition (esp. Homer and Ovid) to create a work with its own message, quite distant from classical texts but, paradoxically, approaching moral and psychological categories in Neo-Stoic mode. Perhaps it is not by chance that a parallel piece, Calderon’s second play on Circe (after the fiesta entitled El mayor encanto, amor, 1635), i.e. the auto sacramentale entitled Los encantos de la culpa (ca. 1650), is also a significant transformation of the motive done in the spirit of the Counter-Reformation.
