In this position paper, we expand on the research conducted in information systems (IS) on sociomateriality by applying it to online learning. The aim was to provide a theoretical underpinning for guidelines to reduce the complexity of social and material combinations in digital education. An overview of sociomateriality within IS research is provided, distinguishing between two sociomaterial perspectives to situate the research. A high-level review of student learning as the social and online learning as the material is applied to a four-quadrant model to unbundle the complexities within this space. Our perspectives are supported by feedback from a third-year information systems course that confirmed the merit of the model and broadened research in online learning. The model is further refined with a philosophical underpinning of Ackoff's four pursuits of humankind to provide recommendations for future interventions.","PeriodicalId":55859,"journal":{"name":"South African Computer Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43500334","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition, this process should be made known to the research community. In this paper we argue that theoretical or applied computing research does not normally conform to this common approach of being explicit about the research approach used but that it should do so. We adopt a pragmatic world view and use an argumentation method within a philosophical analysis design to support our position. We then adopt an accepted conceptual model of research methodology structure and use two examples to show that it can be applied across the field of computing. In addition, we propose a set of questions that could guide researchers in assessing the validity of their research. The model and the questions can be introduced to postgraduate students and developing researchers to assist them in planning and reporting their research. In addition to the practical contribution made by the model and questions, this paper adds to the debate about the place of research methodologies in Computer science research.","PeriodicalId":55859,"journal":{"name":"South African Computer Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43832562","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While several studies have been devoted to explaining the importance of such initiatives, the debate has continued to rage on, with most school authorities imposing a blanket ban on the use of these devices within their premises. In this study, we seek to contribute by examining in-service teachers’ perceptions of the use of personally owned devices in schools within the global south context. The qualitative study explores teachers’ understanding of the usefulness of technology and associated devices such as smartphones in the classroom. The Unified Theory of Use and Acceptance of Technology (UTUAT) was used to draw up a conceptual framework. Purposive sampling was employed to select in-service secondary school teachers who had at some time previously enrolled in an introduction to information technology course at a tertiary institution. Constant comparison analysis and thematic analysis were used to analyse the data from the focus groups. Thirteen thematic areas were drawn from the study and these were framed to support the conceptual framework.","PeriodicalId":55859,"journal":{"name":"South African Computer Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43288858","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An appropriate SDM for a sys-tems development project is adopted to avoid a misfit of a systems development methodology to the systemsdevelopment project contextual settings. An SDM misfit is caused by an SDM whose basic assumptions havebeen violated by the targeted systems development project contextual settings. A misfit may increase theeffort required for an SDM in use to fit the systems development project contextual settings. The study aimsto investigate the contingent use of SDMs as an approach to minimise SDM misfit in a systems developmentproject. The purpose of the article is to present insights on the contingent use of SDMs derived from a surveyof 155 organisations involved in systems development. The results show that both plan-driven and agile SDMclass instances are in use and that hybrid SDMs characterise most SDM implementations. The findings haveimplications for both research and practice as they unify the use of the two SDM classes under the contingentuse of SDMs approach.","PeriodicalId":55859,"journal":{"name":"South African Computer Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42165791","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The innovation was developed using design science research and the usefulness was evaluated using the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model (n=321) with Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The key findings reveal that performance expectancy, effort expectancy, and facilitating conditions are significant factors of the behavioral intention to adopt the CC platform. Social influence was however not a significant factor. These key findings suggest the practical usefulness of the CC platform in motivating the sharing of limited government resources and overcoming traditional government bureaucracy. The study contributes to information systems theory in advocating for the adoption of a sharing economy ethos as a means to maximizing limited government resources in LICs, and in creating digital artifacts using design science research methods. The study recommends for LIC governments to further extend the resource sharing capability to include non-government organisations and citizens.","PeriodicalId":55859,"journal":{"name":"South African Computer Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49480425","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We propose a cognitive computational model of sugarcane growers’ daily decision-making to examine sugarcane supply chain complexities. Growers make decisions based on uncertain weather forecasts; cane dryness; unforeseen emergencies; and the mill’s unexpected call for delivery of a different amount of cane. The Belief-Desire-Intention (BDI) architecture has been used to model cognitive agents in many domains, including agriculture. However, typical implementations of this architecture have represented beliefs symbolically, so uncertain beliefs are usually not catered for. Here we show that a BDI architecture, enhanced with a dynamic decision network (DDN), suitably models sugarcane grower agents’ repeated daily decisions. Using two complex scenarios, we demonstrate that the agent selects the appropriate intention, and suggests how the grower should act adaptively and proactively to achieve his goals. In addition, we provide a mapping for using a DDN in a BDI architecture. This architecture can be used for modelling sugarcane grower agents in an agent-based simulation. The mapping of the DDN’s use in the BDI architecture enables this work to be applied to other domains for modelling agents’ repeated decisions in partially observable, stochastic and dynamic environments","PeriodicalId":55859,"journal":{"name":"South African Computer Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46532746","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some of the factors that may affect project success or failure include process-related factors, such as an unrealistic budget and schedule, or technical-related factors like the methodology. The study aims to determine the influence of the most critical success factors of each category (people, process, and technical) on the overall outcome of software projects in the South African context. This study surveyed members of software development teams from across South African organisations and gathered information about software development project success and factors that contribute to project outcomes. A structured questionnaire was used to collect the study data. According to the results, software development projects need: (1) a committed and motivated team; (2) the client must be involved all the time; (3) specifications/requirements must be clear; (4) leadership must be good; (5) the project’s goals and objectives must be well-defined. The critical success factors are ranked by their strength in relation to success criteria. The study further found that most of the perceived factors are related to non-technical factors. This research contributes to the current software industry debate about critical success factors categories in the South African context.","PeriodicalId":55859,"journal":{"name":"South African Computer Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47040520","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Disruptive technologies are changing the rules of competition in organisations. Most chief information officers agree that there could be significant value in utilising new technology to create a competitive advantage in an agile world; however, in practice, the adoption and implementation of newer technology occur relatively slowly. There is very little research on factors influencing strategic IT decisions from a perspective of disruptive technologies. The objective of this study was to investigate critical factors that guide strategic IT decision-making in an agile business context. Using a literature review, various factors that had an influence on strategic IT decision-making in organisations were identified. The factors were extended and confirmed with data from semi-structured interviews resulting in the Framework for IT decision-making and a model for the classification of IT systems, which provide CIOs with comprehensive guidelines to make strategic IT decisions in the midst of disruptive technologies.","PeriodicalId":55859,"journal":{"name":"South African Computer Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45109871","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, technology creates negative emotions, anxiety and fear among some people due to an established set of norms and individual behaviour patterns. Such fear, anxiety and apprehension has been described as technophobia, which constrains individuals’ ability to use technology and thus puts them at a disadvantage. The continuous emergence of new technologies has given rise to increased technophobia, which is now believed to affect a third of every population. This article examines age differences in the level of technophobia as well as the personal characteristics that positively influence it. A quantitative methodology was employed, and 384 questionnaires were distributed to participants in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The findings show that technophobia occurs within all age groups (the young, middle-aged and older). However, young adults with no formal education and employment demonstrated lower levels of technophobia than other age groups. The results also demonstrate a significant relationship between levels of technophobia and the demographic profile of respondents. The article concludes with a discussion on strategies to manage technophobia.","PeriodicalId":55859,"journal":{"name":"South African Computer Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47486418","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
