The aims of this study were to evaluate reductions and increases in Scots pine tree-ring widths (VTRW) as compared to reference sequences for sites in two types of forest habitat found in the vicinity of the chemical plant complex in Puławy, located in central-eastern Poland, and to determine the relationship between VTRW, climate and anthropogenic factors. A considerable reduction in tree-ring widths compared with reference sites was found for sites affected by chemical plant emissions from the end of the 1960s, i.e. right after the start of the Puławy industrial plants, to the beginning of the 1990s (implementation of new technologies). This period of reduction in tree-ring width lasted longer and was greater in magnitude in the pure Scots pine stands studied within a coniferous mixed forest habitat. Furthermore, the reduction in Scots pine tree-ring width was largely dependent on below-average air temperature in the period from December of the year preceding ring formation until January of the current year and above-average total precipitation from June until August above-average SO2, NH3 and NOx emissions and above-average surface and underground water withdrawals from company intakes. The influence of weather on VTRW was weakened by anthropogenic factors, which affected the quality of the local natural environment. Therefore, Scots pine tree-ring width may be used to evaluate the state of the natural environment and threats it is facing in areas with high levels of industrial pollution including, for example, SO2, NH3 and NOx. This study aimed to assess the diversity and composition of fungal communities associated with soil, rootlets and living needles of P. peuce at three high-altitude forest sites with different edaphic conditions and stand characteristics in south-eastern Montenegro. In total, 90 samples of each substrate (needles, rootlets and soil) were sampled. DNA amplification using ITS2 rDNA as a marker and high-throughput sequencing resulted in 23,394 high-quality reads, representing 825 fungal taxa. There were 52.5% Basidiomycota, 43.9% Ascomycota and 3.6% Mucoromycotina. There were 118 unique fungal taxa in the rootlets, 230 in soil and 113 in the needles, and only 8 taxa were shared. The most common fungi in rootlets were Rhizopogon mohelensis (11.0%), Suillus americanus (8.4%), and R. fallax (6.9%), in soil – Phlebiopsis gigantea (5.1%), Tylospora asterophora (2.9%), and Sollicocossima terricola (2.7%), and in the needles – Dothideomycetes sp. (17.6%), Dothideomycetes sp. (10.7%), and Leotiomycetes sp. (6.5%). The results showed that functional tissues and the rhizosphere soil of P. peuce were inhabited by a  high diversity of fungi. Epigaea gaultherioides (Boisse et Bal.) Takht. is a relic of the Black Sea (Euxine) province, aesthetic, and functional species indigenous to Northeastern Turkey and under the threat of extinction. The species should be cultured to ensure the permanence of the species with ex situ methods and employed in landscape planting design. The present study aimed to determine the effects of gibberellic acid (GA3) and cold storage time on seed germination performance in E. gaultherioides. Cold storage was applied to the seeds at +4 ºC for 16 and 28 months and subsequently the seeds were soaked in GA3 (0, 100, 500 and 1,000 ppm) solutions for 24 hours. The findings indicated that E. gaultherioides seeds that were not treated with GA3 solutions did not germinate. However, it was determined that germination was low in seeds treated with 500 ppm GA3, and 80% of the seeds germinated when treated with cold storage at 25 °C (24 h dark) for 16 months. The ANOVA revealed that there were statistically significant differences between germination percentage and mean germination times for various gibberellic acid doses and cold storage – time processes.  Keywords: cold storage time, germination rate, gibberellic acid, landscape, relict","PeriodicalId":55404,"journal":{"name":"Baltic Forestry","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2022-07-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43073354","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Understanding HMs spatial variability in soils under plant communities is fundamental for soil restoration and predicting contamination by TMs. In this study, HMs content was estimated based on a soil survey conducted in Kryvyi Rih Iron Ore Mining and Metallurgical District, central Ukraine. The distribution of trace metals within a soil profile and their impacts on forest, steppe and agricultural land plant communities were also assessed. During field work, samples were collected from the whole soil profile (in 10 cm layers down to the parent rock). In total, 21 soil pits were sampled and 273 soil samples were collected. The contents of mobile Fe, Mn and Zn were assessed. The results showed that there was a specific pattern of HMs distribution in soil profile at the local background site of Kryvyi Rih District. The accumulation of HMs in soils in the vicinity of an iron ore mining and processing plant was found. Application of individual and integral indices of pollution demonstrated that Fe, Mn and Zn content was related to mining activity. The plant communities had a great impact on the HMs content in soils. According to the values of individual and integrated indices of pollution the plant communities form the following order: agricultural communities > > forest communities > steppe communities. The forest plant communities, due to the presence of organic acids in forest leaf litter, promote the mobilization of heavy metals and may contribute to input of Fe, Mn and Zn ions to deeper soil layers. The differences observed between the plant communities located in the contaminated areas provide useful insight clues into the role and relative importance of major factors determining HMs contents in soil. We studied the development and distribution of the root systems of trees and shrubs on the slopes with different steepness in a forest park in the northern environs of Kyiv (Ukraine). The method of complete excavation of plants growing under the conditions of composite topography, in the park stands employed near ravines, where the plants were exposed due to erosion, was chosen for the research. The samples of root systems of 15 trees and 5 shrubs selected from different locations of growth places were examined: under the canopy, in canopy windows, in the open space, and at the slopes of different expositions with steepness from 6° to 39°. The plants aged up to 13 years, up to 3.5 m high, with crown diameter up to 130 cm and root neck thickness up to 80 mm were selected from undergrowth and understory. The depth of penetration of the root systems into the soil and the order of their branching were measured for further studying the anti-erosion properties of root systems. The area of horizontal projection of the root system to the crown diameter ratio, the soil saturation with roots and the intensity of root system branching were determined. Food pellets were collected from nestlings in four study sites with differing levels of recreational disturbance over 10 breeding seasons. The invertebrates they contained were identified, divided into trophic groups and compared across sites. A total of 1,160 food pellets were collected, containing 3,253 invertebrates from 294 species. Insects comprised 83% of the prey, with the most abundant orders of Diptera, Coleoptera and Lepidoptera. The smallest diversity of prey species was found in samples from the most disturbed site. The qualitative composition of the prey items showed that zoophages were the most frequent trophic group encountered, followed by phytophages, saprophages, polyphages, and necrophages. However, the order of trophic group frequency varied between sites. This research aims to implement the results of ethnoecological studies to develop the Bukit Kangin Forest tourism in the traditional village of Tenganan Pegringsingan, Karangasem, Bali. The population in this study area is considered in two aspects, namely the ecosystem aspect and the socio-system one. The population of the ecosystem consists of all plant species in Bukit Kangin, while the population in the socio-system aspect is the entire community of Tenganan Pegringsingan traditional village. The sample of this research from the ecosystem aspect includes plant species covered by squares with a size of 20×20 meters including tree habitus (nature), 10×10 meters (which includes sapling), and squares with a size of 1×1 meters including seedling habitus. The number of squares is 65 squared. For the community sample, community components are selected with a total sample of 50 people. The ecosystem data collection uses the quadratic method with systematic sampling techniques. Meanwhile, the data collection is carried out by interview, observation sheets, and questionnaires. The data related to ecosystem was analysed using ecological statistical analysis, while the data related to the socio-system were analysed descriptively. Descriptive analysis was used to determine the prospects for forest tourism development. The conclusions of this study are the following: (1) the results of ethnoecological studies in the Bukit Kangin forest, Tenganan Pegringsingan Village, Karangasem, Bali, has the prospect of being developed into forest tourism as an alternative and complementary tourist destination; (2) Some of the results of ethnoecological studies and supported by socio-system that interact with each other can be in the form of plant species composition equipped with descriptions, utilization, processing methods and products of useful plant species. The admixture of wood particles and cement for production of the CBPs were done at mixing ratios of 1:1, 1:1.5 and 1:2 (weight to weight basis). The properties such as water absorption and thickness swelling at 24 hours, density, modulus of rupture (MOR), modulus of elasticity (MOE) and impact bending strength were determined. The results of the study reveal that the density ranged from 0.61 to 0.92 g/cm3. Meanwhile, water absorption and thickness swelling were found to be 30.34 to 72.44 % and 11.43 to 10.77 % at 24 hours, respectively. The bending properties obtained from the laboratory tests ranged from 115.77 to 826.55 N/mm2 and from 1157.70 to 4773.38 N/mm2 for MOR and MOE, respectively, while impact bending strength ranged from 41.70 to 238.49 N/mm2, respectively. As the cementious content increases from 50 % to 66.3 % and wood content decreases from 50 % to 33.4 %, the properties such as density, MOR, MOE and impact bending strength increased, while water absorption and thickness swelling decreases. The statistical results showed that such factors as wood species, cement type and mixing ratio had significant influence on the physical and mechanical properties of CBPs. The study reveals that CBPs made of wood particles of Triplochiton scleroxylon and Dangote cement brand at the ratio of 1:2 were more dimensionally stable, denser and stronger while CBPs of wood particles of Afzelia africana were stiffest and most rigid. As concluded, cement brand had significant importance in qualities of CBPs, which can be attributed to chemical compositions found in materials used. It was found that the potential area for the successful cultivation of this species can be not only the Western but also the Right-Bank and Left-Bank Forest-Steppe. The study has confirmed that European larch plantations, with the appropriate technology for planting and cultivation, are marked by rapid growth, high productivity and resistance. Under the forest site conditions of types C2, D2, and D3, in which the largest number of larch stands were built, a tendency was revealed towards an increased volume of stemwood with an increasing share of larch in the stand composition. Constructed regression models formalize this dependence. With advancing age, the influence of larch on an increase in the growing stock of plantations is reduced. Productivity and growth character of larch plantations in different types of forest growth conditions are different. European larch can form steady-state and highly productive plantations not only in fresh, but also in moist types of forest growth conditions. Under conditions of a fresh fertile site type (D2), as evidenced by the results of ANOVA, the share of larch in the composition of the stand has a significant impact on the main mensuration indices of the stand. The highest values for the average height are characteristic of larch with its significant share in the composition of plantations (6-10 units), and the highest values for the average stem diameter were observed with an average share of the species (3, 5-8 units). It is noted that the technology for the establishment and management of artificial larch plantations should be differentiated depending on the type of forest growth conditions by using optimal mixing and spacing schemes and appropriate silviculture regimes that regulate the share of larch in these stands.
