Recently, it has been brought to the agenda that laser therapies can be effective in reducing the intensity of demodex parasite. With this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of pro-yellow laser applied to the face on the intensity of demodex parasite. Twenty-five patients who had referred to the dermatology polyclinic with a complaint of rash on the face and who had been given proyellow laser therapy during the past year were included in the study. Average pre-laser therapy demodex number per cm<sup>2</sup> was 3.9 ± 5.0, while average post-therapy demodex number per cm<sup>2</sup> was 2.6 ± 4.9 (p = .117). The 577-nm pro-yellow laser caused a change in demodex density. We found that the number of demodex following laser therapy decreased in some patients, while it increased in some others.</p>","PeriodicalId":54852,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.2,"publicationDate":"2021-11-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"40469412","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The control (non-varicose) and varicose vein specimens were subjected to chemical, thermal and morphological analyses. Varicose vein fragments were irradiated with 1.56-μm and 0.97-μm lasers in conditions closely similar to those of the clinical EVLA procedure. The laser treated specimens were subjected to thermal and histological analyses. A noticeable difference in chemical composition and structure was detected between the control and varicose veins. Glycosaminoglycan content increased significantly in varicose vein (P = .02), elastin content decreased insignificantly (P = .26) while collagen content showed a slight, but not significant, increase (P = .14). Varicose vein demonstrated regional variability in wall thickness, some decrease in the amount of smooth muscle cells, thinning and loosening of collagen fibers and fibrosis. The critical laser radiation power was demonstrated simultaneously to cause complete denaturation of collagen (as indicated by the DSC data) and coagulation necrosis of all the three venous wall layers, total homogenization of the tissue and obliteration of vasa vasorum (as indicated by the histological analysis data). Lower laser radiation powers fail to produce these effects. Critical laser power provides the desired result of the thermal effect on the vein ex vivo, namely, tissue necrosis and vasa vasorum destruction. The complete degradation of the collagen recorded by DSC could be a marker of the irreversible destruction of the vein wall in modeling of endoluminal thermal treatment.","PeriodicalId":54852,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.2,"publicationDate":"2021-11-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74977589","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, most port wine stains are not completely cleared after pulsed dye laser therapy, owing to insufficient photocoagulation and laser-induced vascular regeneration and reperfusion. Several studies have explored approaches designed to improve treatment efficacy. This integrative literature review summarizes the results of clinical and animal studies published between 2004 and 2021. Pulsed dye laser has been administered in combination with photoelectric devices (the neodymium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet lasers, dual-wavelength 1064-/595-nm laser irradiation, fiberoptic Nd-YAG laser, photodynamic therapy, and radio frequency), and drugs (rapamycin, imiquimod, timolol, axitinib, endothelin receptor antagonist, artificial red blood cells and oxymetazoline). The initial results suggest that combination therapy is a direction worth exploring in the future. Further large prospective, blinded and controlled multicenter clinical trials with longer follow‐up period are required to obtain more robust evidence.","PeriodicalId":54852,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.2,"publicationDate":"2021-11-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79148359","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moiré is a type of interference pattern corresponding to the shape of the face. We aimed to objectively evaluate the effect of RF on facial skin laxity using moiré. Ten subjects participated and were treated with a monopolar RF on the face. Clinical photographs and moiré images were obtained at the baseline and after treatment. The periorbital angle from the upper third of the face, zygomatic length ratio (L1/L2), angle from the middle third, perioral perpendicular length, and angle from the lower third were analyzed. After one session of RF treatment, the mean zygomatic length ratio (L1/L2) from the middle third of the face significantly increased in the 4th week (by 49.68%, P = .047). The L1/L2 ratio increased to nearly one, which were not significant after 8 weeks. The mean perioral perpendicular length decreased to 282.25 ± 84.069 pixels (px) after 4 weeks, and to 281.38 ± 76.03 px after 24 weeks; these differences were statistically significant. The parameters of zygomatic length ratio and perioral perpendicular length extracted from illuminated moiré images can be useful for objectively assessing various facial tightening treatments in clinical settings.","PeriodicalId":54852,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.2,"publicationDate":"2021-11-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80182270","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of ultrapulse CO2 laser treatment under a microscope for benign eyelid margin lesions, we performed microscopic ultrapulse CO2 laser treatment win 132 patients with benign eyelid margin lesions for cosmetic reasons. Measurements included cosmetic results, complications and patients’ satisfaction. Eighty lesions involved the gray line and 24 lesions were in the lacrimal region. All patients achieved satisfactory cosmetic and therapeutic outcomes. Eyelid contour recovered well with no scar and no malposition. No secondary epiphora was noted after the lesions adjacent to the lacrimal punctum were removed. At the end of follow-up, only 2 patients had mild hypopigmentation and only 1 patient required repeat laser therapy for recurrence. It turned out that ultrapulse CO2 laser treatment under a microscope is a dependable, safe, and effective method for the treatment of benign eyelid margin lesions. It is an excellent alternative to traditional surgery, especially for lesions involving the gray line or positioned in proximity to the lacrimal punctum. It is beneficial for simplifying the treatment, improving the cosmetic result, and maintaining eyelid function.","PeriodicalId":54852,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.2,"publicationDate":"2021-11-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81436212","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, transcutaneous drug delivery of cosmeceuticals initially meant for topical application have also been shown to have unintended side effects. The objective of our study was to report safety data from our single academic center experience consisting of patients treated with topical application of a vitamin C-containing cosmeceutical immediately following fractional ablative CO2 laser treatment with a focus on reportable side effects. Methods: A retrospective chart review of all patients at the University of Minnesota M Health Cosmetic Center who had fractional ablative CO2 (10,600 nm) laser procedure for any diagnosis followed by immediate one-time application of a combination serum containing 15% Vitamin C, 1% Vitamin E, and 0.5% Ferulic acid (C E Ferulic®, SkinCeuticals Inc., New York, NY) from Jan 1, 2015 to Dec 31, 2018 was performed. Pediatric and research opt-out patients were excluded. The medical records of these patients were manually reviewed for the following: age, sex, diagnosis, location, after-care instructions, antiviral and/or antibacterial prophylaxis use, and documentation of post-procedure side effects. Results: Thirty-three patients, encompassing a total of 45 treatment encounters, met inclusion criteria. There were ten cases of expected side effects: erythema (6), erythema with tenderness (1), erythema with mild bumpiness (1), skin peeling with pattern marking (1), and pain with slight bleeding (1). These were attributed to the normal post-procedure course and resolved without complications. There were no reported side effects related to the topical application of Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Ferulic acid serum. Conclusions: The topical application of a Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Ferulic acid serum immediately following fractional ablative CO2 laser therapy did not result in associated complications. However, these results may not be generalizable to longer application courses beyond the immediate post-procedure time period, nor to other cosmeceutical formulations. More studies examining the safety profile of topical cosmeceutical serums in laser-assisted drug delivery are needed.","PeriodicalId":54852,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.2,"publicationDate":"2021-11-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89344435","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Case presentation of a patient underwent picosecond laser cosmetic treatment, complicated with severe corneal burn injury. We evaluate patient’s visual acuity, corneal edema condition under slit lamp and corneal OCT (Optical coherence tomography), corneal shape with topography, and intraocular pressure. Picosecond laser emits optical pulses with duration between one to tens of picoseconds. The original purpose was to remove tattoos, but has now extended to a wide range of skin diseases and even cosmetic use. When applying cutaneous laser therapy, several ocular adverse events have been reported, mostly due to no appropriate ocular protection during treatment. We report a case of corneal burn injury after receiving picolaser therapy for a pigmented lesion over the upper lid. Severe cornea edema and vision impairment improved gradually after appropriate treatment. Even picosecond laser produce less thermal burns then other lasers, it is essential to use ocular protection during the entire treatment. According to our database search, this is the first picolaser-related ocular adverse event reported. Key Points Without appropriate protection, cosmetic laser treatments can cause severe ocular side effects and permanent visual impairment. We present this case to emphasize the importance of ocular protection during the entire treatment period, especially treatments of lesions over the eyelids. According to our knowledge and database search, this is the first reported ocular injury caused by picolaser.","PeriodicalId":54852,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.2,"publicationDate":"2021-11-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83363760","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite of the various choices in the treatment of acne, new therapy with fewer complications and lower relapse rate is still in need. In this study, we aim to evaluate the clinical efficacy of a new therapy using selective sebaceous gland electro-thermolysis and non-thermal plasma (NTP) in refractory acne patients. Treatments were given at a monthly interval for three times. The last visit was set at 3 months after the third treatment. Thirty-six moderate to very severe acne patients were enrolled. All the patients got more than 50% clearance after the third treatment. The excellent response rate was 44% at 1 month after the third treatment and 50% at 3 months after the third treatment. Porphyrin and erythema values were significantly reduced after the third treatment. No irreversible complication was reported. Selective sebaceous gland electro-thermolysis combined with NTP can be a safe and effective new option in the treatment of acne.","PeriodicalId":54852,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.2,"publicationDate":"2021-11-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78989183","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This retrospective study comprised 52 patients with mild-to-moderate skin laxity and wrinkles who received 1–3 treatments 1 month apart and were followed up for 1–7 months. At baseline and post-treatment, three blinded observers measured facial contour and lines, analyzed VISIA scores, and assessed the results using Alexiades Comprehensive Grading Scale (ACGS) and Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (GAIS). Significant improvements were observed (P < .05) in facial width (left 5.95%, right 5.66%), nasolabial folds (left 18.98%, right 20.56%), marionette lines (left 18.88%, right 25.80%), and cheek lines (left 3.35%, right 3.05%) and in the scores of wrinkles (15.37%), texture (13.67%), pores (6.48%), and red areas (6.57%) using VISIA. There was an obvious reduction in wrinkles, laxity, erythema/telangiectasia based on ACGS, and 75% improved and 5.8% much improved using GAIS. There was no severe side effect.
