{"title":"Experiences of Workplace Violence in Graduate Nursing Clinical Education.","authors":"Kristin H Gigli, John D Gonzalez","doi":"10.1097/NNE.0000000000001630","DOIUrl":"10.1097/NNE.0000000000001630","url":null,"abstract":"<p><strong>Background: </strong>Exposure to workplace violence (WPV) is common in health care, and little is known about nurse practitioner (NP) students' experiences during graduate nursing clinical education.</p><p><strong>Purpose: </strong>This study described experiences of WPV among NP students during their clinical education.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>We conducted a cross-sectional, quantitative survey of a random sample of NPs licensed in Texas examining graduate nursing education experiences.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>A total of 334 NPs responded, a 12% response rate. More than a quarter (27%) experienced WPV during their graduate nursing clinical experience. Preceptors were the most reported perpetrators (44%). Most NPs remained in their clinical site after their WPV experience (55%); a majority felt they had no alternative clinical placement option.</p><p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>Nurse practitioner students experience WPV, and there may be implications for educational persistence and their careers. {"title":"Retention of Nursing Educators: A Qualitative Study of Personal and Work Environment Aspects.","authors":"Ghareeb Bahari, Alya Alghamdi","doi":"10.1097/NNE.0000000000001752","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1097/NNE.0000000000001752","url":null,"abstract":"<p><strong>Background: </strong>Limited support for nurse educators can hinder their professional development, as they may struggle to apply best practices and innovative teaching strategies.</p><p><strong>Purpose: </strong>This study aimed to identify the personal and work environment aspects that influence nursing faculty members' ability to remain in academia.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>This qualitative descriptive study was conducted with 18 faculty members working at 2 public universities in Saudi Arabia. Entrustable professional activities (EPAs) show promise as a competence assessment framework in graduate nursing education.</p><p><strong>Purpose: </strong>This study sought to develop and validate a set of EPAs that reflect the core activities performed by all nurse practitioners (NPs).</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>Eight EPAs were developed. Better understanding is needed of what it means to students to \"learn\" from writing support.</p><p><strong>Approach: </strong>A full-semester writing course was implemented in a nursing science PhD program. In formative course assessment activities, students identified problems in early drafts of their work, which they subsequently learned to detect and resolve. In this article, students report what was learned.</p><p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>Writing skills, like clinical skills, are intertwined with intellectual maturation and sense of professional identity. Writing, like clinical learning, requires an investment of time and labor far beyond what is typical in didactic approaches to classroom-based graduate education. {"title":"Benefits and Barriers of Using Virtual Reality in Teaching Undergraduate Nursing Students: A Scoping Review.","authors":"Ragi George, Sharon K Titus","doi":"10.1097/NNE.0000000000001660","DOIUrl":"10.1097/NNE.0000000000001660","url":null,"abstract":"<p><strong>Background: </strong>Although studies have been conducted using virtual reality (VR) in nursing education, evidence distinguishing the benefits and barriers of adopting VR pedagogical methods to teach undergraduate nursing students is not well-defined in nursing literature.</p><p><strong>Purpose: </strong>To identify current evidence on the benefits and barriers of adopting VR as a pedagogical method in nursing education.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>A scoping review of 6 databases using PRISMA-ScR reporting guidelines. Data were managed using Covidence® software. Table of Evidence illustrates the themes.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Seventeen articles identified 5 thematic benefits of VR (knowledge acquisition, student engagement, improved self-confidence, teaching strategy, and cost factors) and 4 barriers (physical discomfort, learning outcome challenges, challenges to integrating into curricula, and technology challenges).</p><p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>VR is an effective teaching-learning strategy to reinforce nursing concepts and build competencies.
