The goal of this study was to estimate the consumption rates of males and females S. lemniscata as fifth-instar nymphs and adults under controlled conditions (30ºC, 14L:10D, 40% RH). The consumption trials were carried out using the perennial grass Festuca arundinacea (Schreber) (Poaceae) as food source. The study of these aspects is necessary to determine its current pest status more accurately. Consumption rates differed according to sex and stage of development. These where higher in the pre-reproductive adult stage vs. fifth-instar nymphs for both sexes. Additionally, adult females consumed significantly more (118.81 ± 9.41 mg/day) than the rest of individuals. The consumption of adult males and fifth-instar females was similar. Knowledge on consumption rates could contribute to the development of effective sustainable population management strategies.","PeriodicalId":54250,"journal":{"name":"Revista De La Sociedad Entomologica Argentina","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136367673","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By means of extensive monitoring, this wasp was found in four distant districts of Mendoza province parasitizing three lepidopteran pests: Lobesia botrana (Den. et Shiff.) in grapevine, Ectomyelois ceratoniae (Zeller) in walnut and “espinillo” (Vachellia caven (Molina) Seigler et Ebinger) and Cydia pomonella (L.) in walnut. To corroborate the parasitoid species identification and to analyze its population viability in this region, studies of male genitalia and sexual crossings between wild and laboratory-reared wasps were conducted. Further, we report for the first time the natural host-parasitoid interaction of L. botrana with this parasitoid in vineyards from Argentina.","PeriodicalId":54250,"journal":{"name":"Revista De La Sociedad Entomologica Argentina","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136367674","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ovipositions made by the adults to lay eggs on trunks and branches were observed, with galleries between two and five cm deep, which caused the branches to dry up and, in some cases, complete death of the trees. In trees previously affected with vascular pathogens or with nutrient deficiencies, the damage was more severe because the larvae formed galleries that surrounded the trunk or branches, preventing the flow of nutrients. The average incidence in the sampled trees was 10.8%. Since the Martínez de la Torre area is the most important Persian lime production region in Mexico, it is necessary to monitor crops to determine the presence of insects and develop studies to define levels of damage and management strategies for their insects’ populations when required. This is the first record of A. quadrigibbus and T. undatus associated with trees of the Rutaceae family and causing damage to Persian lime orchards.","PeriodicalId":54250,"journal":{"name":"Revista De La Sociedad Entomologica Argentina","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136367671","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Larval response to light can be assessed by a fast and highly repetitive assay like a half-dark/half-illuminated plate. Drosophila melanogaster Meigen (Diptera: Drosophilidae) mutants can be used to study the response of larvae to sensory stimuli. Adults of the ebony mutant show behavioural deficits such as abnormal circadian rhythms and severe defects in vision, whereas the tan mutants show a slight deficiency in vision. We analysed the response of D. melanogaster mutant larvae for N-β-alanyl derivatives metabolism (ebony and tan) to determine whether they also show abnormal phototactic behaviour. Our results showed that ebony larvae exhibited a random response to light, whereas tan larvae showed a similar response to wild-type larvae. To assess if N-β-alanyl derivatives metabolism might be involved in the response of larvae to light, we fed them with N-β-alanyldopamine (NBAD), N-β-alanylhistamine (carcinine) or dopamine. NBAD restored the wt response in ebony larvae, whereas carcinine and DA produced no effect. These results suggest, for the first time, that NBAD might act as a neuroactive compound involved in the phototactic response of the D. melanogaster larvae.","PeriodicalId":54250,"journal":{"name":"Revista De La Sociedad Entomologica Argentina","volume":"166 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136367891","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is a significant pest of many crops, particularly maize. To control it, genetically modified plants and synthetic pesticides are the main strategies employed, which has led to the emergence of resistant populations to both methods. The earwig Doru lineare (Eschscholtz) (Dermaptera: Forficulidae) has been observed in Argentina consuming both eggs and early instars S. frugiperda larvae. To contribute to the implementation of a rational pest management system, field cage tests were conducted to assess the efficiency of D. lineare as a predator against S. frugiperda and its potential protection of maize seedlings from the pest. The results of the tests showed that the survival rate of S. frugiperda larvae was significantly affected by the presence of earwigs. When two earwigs were released into a cage containing ten maize seedlings infested with twenty S. frugiperda larvae, after ten days, the dry weight of the plants was significantly higher and the level of damage was significantly lower compared to those without earwig release. These results confirm the protective effect of D. lineare against S. frugiperda, suggesting that earwigs should be considered as promising predators in conservation control strategies for maize crops.","PeriodicalId":54250,"journal":{"name":"Revista De La Sociedad Entomologica Argentina","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136367047","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
