In the present study, we studied the foraging behavior of both the honeybee species and their comparative role in the reproductive performance of the strawberry at the research farm of The Islamia University of Bahawalpur. Both the species comprised 53% of the total pollinators’ abundance. Apis florea had high visitation frequency (0.449±0.03 individuals per 120 seconds) than A. dorsata (0.211±0.02). The activity of A. florea was the maximum at 12:00 pm while A. dorsata remained active in low abundance throughout the day. Apis florea exhibited a higher stay time but a lower visitation rate than A. dorsata. Apis dorsata proved to be an effective pollinator of the strawberry rather than A. florea in terms of fruit length, weight and diameter. There is a need to conserve wild honeybees under the current scenario of anthropogenic land use changes and intensification in agriculture.","PeriodicalId":54250,"journal":{"name":"Revista De La Sociedad Entomologica Argentina","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135083086","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was detected for the first time in Argentina in 2004. In order to assess the aphid species that could act as a potential vector of this disease, we described the aphids community and seasonal fluctuation within two Prunus orchards affected by Sharka disease, located within two quarantine areas in Cuyo Region. Aphids were trapped weekly from October (spring) to April (autumn) during 2011-2012 and 2012-2013, by using yellow water traps (TAA), and identified using winged aphid’s taxonomic keys. In total, 27 aphid species were identified. The most dominant species collected was Myzus persicae (Sulzer). Orchard-trapped population of this dominant aphid showed seasonal fluctuation with two peaks, November (spring) and March (autumn).","PeriodicalId":54250,"journal":{"name":"Revista De La Sociedad Entomologica Argentina","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135083088","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Currently there is little information in Mexico on this species. This paper describes and illustrates the characteristics of adults and pupae of both sexes, the male genitalia, and the damage caused by larvae in strawberry plantations. Adults possess several distinctive features that make them recognizable from other pest Lepidoptera, such as the transverse distal line on the forewings, which forms a finger-like figure. The abdomen of females is wide, contrary to males which is thin, tubular and elongated beyond the wings. The sexual differences in pupae are observed in the genital slits located in the 9th abdominal segment. The male slit presents a lobe on each side, while the female lacks these structures. The larvae feed on the roots, stems and fruits of strawberry plants, also allowing the entry of opportunistic pathogens. This information is useful to initiate research that requires live sexed insects, to support species identification and improve monitoring methods.","PeriodicalId":54250,"journal":{"name":"Revista De La Sociedad Entomologica Argentina","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135082957","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For laboratory colony maintenance, live animals are generally used, while various artificial feeders with different characteristics have been developed for experimental assays. In this study, a previously developed and pathogen-tested glass artificial feeder was selected and evaluated for rearing Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus). The device utilizes bovine gut as a membrane and human blood as a food source, maintaining a constant temperature of 37 °C through a thermostatic bath that enables water circulation around the feeder. Egg hatching, feeding rates, and fertility were analyzed for three cohorts of a parental lineage (P) and their respective filial lineages (F1) over a period of 4-5 weeks. The results demonstrated the efficacy of this methodology for rearing an Ae. aegypti colony up to the second generation, with average egg hatching rates of P= 0.92 and F1= 0.80, average feeding rates of P= 0.54 and F1= 0.73, and egg quantities obtained of P= 1809 and F1 = 8579.","PeriodicalId":54250,"journal":{"name":"Revista De La Sociedad Entomologica Argentina","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135083085","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is the first survey of diurnal adult mosquitoes in an urban reserve in Buenos Aires City (Argentina). Fortnightly daytime samples were carried out during a year affected by a drought due to La Niña effect, to describe the adult mosquito community and analyze its association with environmental variables. Ten species belonging to the genera Culex L., Aedes Meigen, Psorophora Robineau-Desvoidy and Mansonia Blanchard were captured, some of which are vectors of pathogens (e.g. Aedes albifasciatus (Macquart) and the complex Culex pipiens L.). Diversity did not vary significantly among seasons, and the composition was moderately similar (ANOVA: p = 0.11; Dice-Sorensen: 0.50-0.77). However, classification of species as core, common or rare in the community varied. A canonical correspondence analysis allowed us to identify a group of five species associated with summer and high temperatures. The other species were not grouped, and were associated with rainfall, relative humidity or another season. These associations help to understand the presence and abundance of those species during a prolonged drought.","PeriodicalId":54250,"journal":{"name":"Revista De La Sociedad Entomologica Argentina","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136367898","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
