As a young destitute woman who defies the oppressive rules of an oligarchic and patriarchal totalitarian order, Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) represents the utopian potential of intersectional politics forged across class, gender, racial and geopolitical borders. In opposition to ecocidal and patriarchal conceptions of progress, Katniss’s ecofeminist heroism is illustrative of the emergence of cosmopolitan political imaginaries that advocate sustainable, egalitarian collective futures constructed beyond the methodological frameworks of neoliberal globalisation and material dialectics. Contemporary with young activists like Greta Thunberg, one of the founders of the ecological movement Fridays for Future, Katniss can be taken as a cinematic representative of a new generation of utopian political actors for whom individual well-being is tied to ecosocial welfare and cosmopolitan inclusion.","PeriodicalId":54016,"journal":{"name":"Atlantis-Journal of the Spanish Association of Anglo-American Studies","volume":"326 1","pages":"89-109"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2021-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75072408","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

La pelicula Crimson Peak (2015) del director Guillermo del Toro se basa en tres motivos recurrentes en la ficcion gotica (neo) victoriana, los traumas domesticos, la familia disfuncional y lo sobrenatural. Mi objetivo principal es explorar como Del Toro utiliza la trama del incesto para subvertir las visiones preconcebidas e idealizadas sobre la familia victoriana. En primer lugar, analizo la casa ancestral y la figura materna como origen de los traumas familiares, para a continuacion examinar la relacion incestuosa entre los hermanos Sharpe desde un enfoque triple: etico, estetico y psicoanalitico. Sobre esta base, argumento que Del Toro representa traumas familiares del siglo XIX que continuan siendo relevantes en la sociedad actual, con el objetivo de que los espectadores puedan tomar conciencia de estos problemas sociales e incluso adoptar una postura activa contra los mismos. English(Neo-)Victorian literature offers contradictory conceptualisations of the nuclear family. While it usually revolves around traditional heteroparental households, at the same time it portrays them as fragmented and deeply flawed. Guillermo del Toro’s film Crimson Peak (2015) builds on domestic traumas, the dysfunctional family and the supernatural, three recurrent tropes in (neo-)Victorian Gothic fiction. My main aim is to explore how Del Toro exploits the incest plotline in order to subvert preconceived views on the idealised Victorian family. I first analyse the ancestral family house and the mother figure as the loci of family traumas. I then move on to examine the Sharpe siblings’ incestuous relationship from a threefold perspective involving ethics, aesthetics and psychoanalysis, thereby showing that Del Toro exposes nineteenth-century family traumas that are still present in contemporary societies, so that audiences may become aware of these social issues and even take an active stance against them.","PeriodicalId":54016,"journal":{"name":"Atlantis-Journal of the Spanish Association of Anglo-American Studies","volume":"415 1","pages":"76-93"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2020-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79437611","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analysis of Spanish and English child monolingual data and adult input available in CHILDES reveals a similar pattern of emergence of prepositional and DOCs in the two language groups. This suggests a lack of derivation between the two structures in the two languages, assuming that more complex derived structures emerge later than nonderived ones. This is argued to be the case despite the difference between English and Spanish DA, as per the Complex Predicate Parameter. The delay in the onset and the lower incidence of English and Spanish prepositional DA seems to be related to the amount of exposure in the adult input. These findings, therefore, suggest that children acquire the similar syntactic nonderivational relationship that underlies DA constructions both in English and in Spanish. Besides, adult input factors seem to play a similar role in the children’s preference for the use of DOCs rather than prepositional structures in the two languages.","PeriodicalId":54016,"journal":{"name":"Atlantis-Journal of the Spanish Association of Anglo-American Studies","volume":"607 ","pages":"212-234"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2020-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72440727","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

EnglishThis article closely examines the film American Gangster (2007) as a reinterpretation of the gangster film in light of neoliberalism. Deploying a critical framework underpinned by cultural and film genre studies, I argue the film revisits key tropes and themes of the gangster film by drawing substantially on neoliberal ideology and by addressing certain worldviews and phenomena concerning capitalist accumulation, such as Keynesianism, libertarianism and the relation between the state and private spheres. A wealth of scholarly literature has accrued that probes neoliberal capitalism as the hegemonic economic and political system of our time. However, film studies has yet to comprehensively take up the study of neoliberalism. Additionally, whether there are genre specificities in the way neoliberalism has been translated into film is a significantly underexplored area of research. American Gangster constitutes a particularly appropriate film to cohesively and unitarily tackle all those questions.","PeriodicalId":54016,"journal":{"name":"Atlantis-Journal of the Spanish Association of Anglo-American Studies","volume":"60 1","pages":"57-75"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2020-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75786766","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Un claro ejemplo de esto lo encontramos en “The Traveller” (1988), un relato corto de caracter alegorico que incorpora una marcada agenda feminista. Sin embargo, podria decirse que, frente a otras obras de Syal, este relato ha sido ampliamente ignorado por la critica literaria. El objetivo de este articulo es contribuir precisamente a rectificar este desequilibrio, reevaluando la importancia de este texto dentro de la obra de la autora. Apoyandose en trabajos criticos de corte feminista, el articulo tambien pretende proporcionar un analisis detallado del mencionado relato, revelando y examinando la alegoria feminista que encapsula. Como se expone a lo largo del articulo, “The Traveller” se erige como una critica a las tendencias universalizadoras sobre las que se ha sostenido el feminismo occidental, al tiempo que enuncia la aparicion del denominado feminismo negro britanico en las decadas de 1970 y 1980. A pesar de esto, a traves de sus densas metaforas, el relato de Syal tambien enfatiza la idea de comonalidad, destacando la necesidad de reconocer tanto las diferencias como los puntos en comun, asi como la pertinencia de establecer vinculos entre la experiencia femenina en el subcontinente indio y sus diasporas. EnglishCommitted to the exploration of the female experience—specifically the South Asian female experience—Meera Syal has often woven a feminist subtext into the fabric of her works. This is probably nowhere more evident than in “The Traveller” (1988), an allegorical short story that constitutes Syal’s more sustained effort to produce a feminist text per se. However, whereas Syal’s novels and screenplays have been accorded considerable critical attention, “The Traveller” has been largely overlooked. This article aims to help rectify this imbalance by reassessing the importance of this text within Syal’s oeuvre. Drawing on feminist discourse, it also provides a detailed analysis of the story, unveiling and examining its feminist allegory. As I contend, “The Traveller” provides a critique of the universalising tendencies at the core of much Western feminism, whilst also enunciating the coming into being of Black British feminism in the 1970s and 1980s. This notwithstanding, through the figure of the “traveller,” a strong metaphor throughout, Syal’s story also creates common ground, highlighting the need to recognise both differences and commonalities and to build bridges amongst South Asian women living at both ends of the East-West divide.","PeriodicalId":54016,"journal":{"name":"Atlantis-Journal of the Spanish Association of Anglo-American Studies","volume":"2 1","pages":"1-19"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2020-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75028010","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To this end, effective English language teaching (ELT) requires preparation on the part of instructors in terms of consciously guiding learners’ literacy development and integrating multiple modes of creating meaning that are broader than language alone. En el estudio de ASPA, se utiliza la pareja de antonimos innie/outie para el analisis del nexo existente entre los conceptos de antonimia, sufijacion y analogia en los veintinueve significados identificados en los corpus (News on the Web Corpus y Lexis Nexis Academic). Este estudio de caso demuestra que un AP es el resultado del solapamiento de varias categorias en las que intervienen las bases (in-, out-), el sufijo (-ie/y), la naturaleza complementaria y coalescente de las parejas, y la adaptacion morfologica de los etimos para que puedan encajar como pares. El proceso de ASPA es un principio universal y variable que puede depender de la opacidad semantica de las bases, del valor sociolinguistico del vocabulario y del concepto de creatividad lexica. El estudio del proceso de analogia morfologica de parejas de antonimos puede arrojar luz sobre la predictibilidad y uso (rendimiento) de los mecanismos de formacion de palabras tanto en el lexico estandar como en el periferico. EnglishIn English, there are a series of paired antonyms ending with the same suffix, particularly in slang or colloquial speech—stardom, regulardom/unknowndom; friendship, enemyship; singlehood, marriedhood, etc. This article looks into the tenets of the analogical suffixation of paired antonyms (ASPA), which is the process that is thought to underlie the mechanisms of morphological analogy and semantic complementation in the structuring of same-suffixed antonymic pairs (APs). In the study of ASPA, the AP innie/outie is used to explore the interconnection of antonymy, suffixation and analogy in the twenty-nine senses identified in the corpora (News on the Web Corpus and Lexis Nexis Academic). This case study shows that the semantic composition of the AP is the result of overlapping categories that involve the bases (in-, out-), the attached suffix (-ie/y), the complementary and coalescent nature of the pairs and the morphological adaptation undergone by the etymons to fit into the pairing markedness. The process of ASPA is a universal and scalar property that depends on the semantic opacity of bases, the sociolinguistic value of the word stock and the concept of lexical creativity. The examination of the morphological analogy of paired antonyms can shed more light on the predictability and performance (profitability) of word-formation mechanisms in both mainstream and peripheral lexis.","PeriodicalId":54016,"journal":{"name":"Atlantis-Journal of the Spanish Association of Anglo-American Studies","volume":"87 1","pages":"189-211"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2020-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78278120","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
